Wade is overturned. The New Handbook for a Post-Roe America is a comprehensive and user-friendly manual for understanding and preparing for the looming changes to reproductive rights law, and getting the health care you need. Activist and writer Robin Marty guides readers through various worst-case scenarios of a post-Roe America, and offers ways to fight back, including: how to acquire financial support, how to use existing networks and create new ones, and how to, when required, work outside existing legal systems. She details how to plan for your own emergencies, how to start organizing now, what to know about self-managed abortion care with pills and/or herbs, and how to avoid surveillance. The only guidebook of its kind, The New Handbook for a Post-Roe America includes new chapters that cover the needs and tools available for pregnant people across the country. This second edition features extensively updated information on abortion legality and access in the United States, and approximately one hundred pages of new content, covering such topics as independent alternatives to Planned Parenthood, "auntie networks," taxpayer-funded abortions, and using social media wisely in the age of surveillance.

Book excerpt: Where do you turn when you are wrestling with a painful decision? You turn to your spouse, trusted friends and relatives, to professionals, to religious advisers. But sometimes you want accurate information and suggestions all in one place, in a form you can use on your own. The decision to have an abortion is not an easy one, and it is not the right decision for every pregnant woman, even in difficult circumstances. Every situation is different. Women considering abortion range in age from nine to fifty-five years. They are rich and poor; married and unmarried; white, black, brown, yellow, and red; members of every religious group and ethnic origin; heterosexual and homosexual. Some have no one to talk to and others have too many people talking to them. Some are in danger from physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. Abortion: Facts and Feelings is for women who are considering whether to have an abortion, women who have had an abortion and want to do more thinking about it, and relatives, mates, lovers, friends, and health professionals who want to help the women they care for make the best possible choices for themselves. Partners in relationships, families, and friends, and, of course, pregnant women themselves, deserve to have accurate information about this common, but controversial, procedure -- information they can use to make both personal and policy decisions. This book contains that information. It discusses * The practice of abortion in other times and places, and practical information about how it is practiced now* How to find out about abortion laws where you live, and laws in other places where you might go if necessary* The attitudes of major North American religious groups about abortion, and how to obtain more specific information about the approaches of your religion to your situation* The medical and psychological outcomes of abortion* Alternatives to abortion -- delivering the baby and either caring for it yourself or allowing someone else to provide the parenting* The needs and concerns of women in special circumstances, and of women's loved ones Most important, it will help you think through and carry out your own decision, whatever it is.

Handbook for a Post-Roe America is a comprehensive and user-friendly manual for understanding and preparing for the looming changes to reproductive rights law, and getting the healthcare you need—by any means necessary. The only guidebook of its kind, Handbook for a Post-Roe America includes an extensive, detailed resource guide for all pregnant people (whether cis, trans, or non-binary) of clinics, action groups, abortion funds, and practical support groups in each state, so wherever you live, you can get involved. With a newly right-wing Supreme Court and a Republican Senate, Roe is under threat. Robin Marty observes: "When we say abortion will be illegal in half the states in the nation, we are no longer talking about some hypothetical future—we are talking about just years down the road. We have to act now to secure what access remains, shore up the networks supporting those who need care, and decide what risks we are willing to take to ensure that any person who wants a termination can still end that pregnancy—with or without the government's permission."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focus on Abortion: Americans Share Their Storiesintroduces the often-missing and most important voices in the abortion conversation: the voices of those who have experienced abortion. This projectprovides a platform for these voices to be heard. Sixty-two individuals are featured. They have had an abortion or are close to the abortion experience, including partners, friends, relatives, counselors, and professionals who provide abortion care. Each person is represented by a photographic portrait and a first-person narrative. The storytellers come from diverse socio-economic backgrounds and generations. They live in urban, suburban and rural areas throughout America. Together they will provide a broad, complex and poignant picture of abortion in our country. These nuanced stories have the potential to mitigate the profound stigma that surrounds abortion. Few people talk about their abortions so many will be surprised to learn that one out of four women in the US will have an abortion during their reproductive years. These narratives touch on the complex circumstances leading up to the decision to end a pregnancy, the person's ability to access healthcare, and life after having had an abortion. Most importantly, these stories have the potential to widen public understanding of abortion. We learned from the Civil Rights and Gay Rights movements that deep-seated beliefs can evolve once people give voice to their personal stories.

Book excerpt: In brief, concise chapters, this volume considers the status of abortion in Europe today. Each chapter provides an overview of abortion in the subject country, including the historical background; the current legal, medical, and social situation; and the political forces for and against abortion. In an introductory chapter, the editors consider the issues pertaining to abortion in the aftermath of the Cold War. The volume then includes chapters on Austria, Belgium, Britain, Bulgaria, the Czech and Slovak Republics, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the former Soviet Union. Each chapter was written by an authority of the country, and the contributors were asked to answer a specific set of questions concerning the law in the subject country, abortion in practice, the politics of abortion, and the future. The approach makes the book a valuable tool for comparative analysis.

Abortion in the United States: A Reference Handbook offers a balanced, objective look at the ultimate "wedge" issue in American culture. This volume offers a revealing history of abortion politics and policy from the 1800s to Roe v. Wade to the present, with clear analyses of disputes such as public funding for abortion, the status of the fetus, contraception, abortion as a "litmus test" for candidates and judicial nominees, and more. A separate chapter looks at abortion politics throughout the world and places the United States in a global context. Biographies of major players, extensive data and documents, and a bibliography of important resources make this an essential resource on one of the most controversial topics in our national dialog.

Book excerpt: Abortion has existed since ancient times, but the debate over the legality and morality of abortion has never been so widespread. It is a controversy that concerns YAs, not only because it has become a notorious political issue, but because it is an issue that many may have to face. For this reason, it is a common topic for research papers in middle school and high school. Costa's book will be a great starting point for these papers. It is the second edition of a book that was well reviewed when first published in 1991. The first edition made Library Journal's list of Best Reference Books of 1991 and School Library Journal's Recommended Reference Books 1992. Unlike The Abortion Controversy (Greenhaven, 1995), it is not organized by arguments pro and con. Rather, it consists of several chapters of objective research material: a chronology of events beginning with Classical Greece; biographical sketches of current movers and shakers on both sides of the issue; laws, policies and landmark court cases; as well as extensive abortion statistics. There is a frank discussion of abortion techniques and complications (psychological and physical) and an overview of fetal development. It concludes with a lengthy annotated directory of organizations and an extensive bibliography of print and nonprint materials. The purpose of the book is to present historical and factual background information objectively along with resources for further exploration. For instance, the reader will learn that in 1864 the American Medical Association established a prize for the best anti-abortion book written for the lay public. One will also find that the most common reason for having an abortion is that a baby would interfere with work, school or other responsibilities. In the statistical section, a reader will see that 89 percent of abortions are performed within the first twelve weeks of pregnancy. The biography section includes a profile of Mary Cunningham Agee, founder of the Nurturing Network, which offers alternatives to abortion for women who fear that their unintended pregnancies will do irreparable harm to their education or career. Abortion: A Reference Handbook, is just what the title says. It is packed with information, but strives to be factual. It is a resource for student researchers and will be welcomed in any public or high school library.-Paula J. Lacey. Copyright 1997 Voya Reviews.

Book excerpt: This handbook discusses 33 nations in terms of abortion's legal status, development of the policy, availability of contraception and abortion services, abortion rates, fertility trends, and the demographic/socioeconomic profiles of affected women. The amount of data consolidated in one volume is prodigious, providing information not readily available in any other single source. . . . In terms of policies and data, the book is excellent. Library Journal This unique work assembles in a single volume data from several continents on the general pattern of legal activity pertaining to abortion, as well as service delivery, the incidence of abortion, and the profile of aborting women. Each of the thirty-three essays in the Handbook surveys in depth the historical development of abortion policy; the role of the medical profession, news media, religious and women's organizations, and other groups in legislative enactments; and demographic data concerning women who seek abortions. Also dealt with are the relation between abortion, fertility behavior, and family planning policy and programs; the incidence of, complications from, and morbidity as a result of illegal abortions; and abortion research.

This technical and policy guidance provides a comprehensive overview of the many actions that can be taken in health systems to ensure that women have access to good quality abortion services as allowed by law.
