Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of the Eye: A Practical Handbook for the Use of General Practitioners and Students The aim of this little book is to give to the general practitioner and student a brief account of the principal affections of the eye and their treatment in as concise and practical a manner as possible. To this end accounts of the anatomy and physiology of the eye and of its physical optics have been omitted, as these subjects are best studied in the text books on Anatomy, Physiology, and Physics. Full directions for the various Operations on the eye have also been omitted, for only a very small proportion of medical men undertake these, and for such there is an ample choice of large text books on Ophthalmology. Lastly, directions for the use of the ophthalmoscope have been omitted, as after several years' experience with students I am most strongly of opinion that its use can only be learnt from clinical teaching, and that all printed instructions are little better than wasted labour. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hand-Book of Diseases of the Eye: A d104-Book for Students and Practitioners The object in presenting this small volume on the eye is to place before the student and the busy practitioner in a concise manner the results of recent investigations and their practical application. All unnecessary details have been omitted, and yet the common eye diseases and their treatment have been sufficiently elaborated. The special chapter on bacteriology has been incorporated because of the great aid in the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment we obtain from the bacteriological examination of the acute inflammatory diseases of the eye. The chapter on refraction gives the details of modern methods necessary for preliminary work in this subject, and will serve as a groundwork for the finer tests which only experience can bring. The chapter on the sclera gives the latest investigations on the tuberculous origin of most forms of inflammation which attack this structure, also some points on tuberculin therapy. As an appendix to this chapter the Calmette ophthalmo-tuberculin reaction and the von Pirquet cutaneous test are considered as methods of diagnosing tubercular diseases of the eye. The chapter on the relation of the eye and the nose is a new departure in a purely ophthalmic text-book. It has become necessary because of the numerous eye affections now known to be dependent upon pathological conditions in the nose. A formulary has been appended which contains forty-one practical prescriptions, which will be of value to the practitioner. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ear: Its Anatomy, Physiology, and Diseases; A Practical Treatise for the Use of Medical Students and Practitioners IN view of the great advances which have been made of late years in Otology, and of the increasing interest manifested in it, the Author has felt that the profession might welcome a new work, which should present clearly but concisely its present aspect, and should indicate the direction in which further researches can be most profitably carried on. Such a work it has been the Author's aim to produce, and in accomplishing the task it will be seen that he has freely availed himself of the observations and discoveries of others. These he has, as far as practicable, tested by his own experience in the Opportunities afforded by several years' special devotion to the study of the diseases of the ear. Considerable practice in teaching has shown him that the pathology and therapeutics of the ear cannot be properly under stood without a more intimate acquaintance with its anatomy and physiology than is afforded by the ordinary text-books. In these departments much important work has recently been done abroad, especially in Germany, and the author is confident that the space which he has devoted to their consideration will not be considered as excessive.
