Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Optics: For Students of Ophthalmology The question as to the method of transmission of light has been the subject of much controversy. Leaving aside the speculations of the ancients, the two theories are the Corpuscular or Emission The ory and the Wave Theory. The first supposes a luminous body to give off certain particles, which, striking the eye, produce vision. The wave theory supposes that all space is pervaded by a substance called ether; and that by means of this substance, waves, excited in the luminous body, are transmitted to the eye. While some of the phenomena of light can be explained by either theory, experiments by Huyghens, Young, and Fresnel have rendered the emission theory untenable. While we are forced to the belief that light is propagated in waves, we are ignorant as to the nature of these waves. It was formerly supposed that the ether was a highly elastic body, transmitting vibrations of its particles through space just as a rod of steel, if struck near one end, will convey the vibrations to the other end. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text Book of Ophthalmology No apology can be necessary for the issuance of a work of this kind, when it is known that there is not a treatise that is particularly designed for the student in his class work in college, most works being intended for the skilled oculist. The arrangement of the subjects has been made in keeping with the needs of the student: first the anatomy and physiology of the eye, then the diseases and their treatment in such natural order, that the subject treated is designed to prepare him as well as possible at each recitation for that which follows. While this treatise is especially intended for the student in his class work at college, it is no less adaptable for him as a general practitioner, for what is necessary for the student to know and understand thoroughly, in reference to a knowledge of the anat emy, diagnosis and treatment of an affection of the eye, in the most concise and practical form, is equally suited to the general practitioner. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of the Diseases of the Eye: Their Pathology and Treatment The rapid advancement of medicine during the present century has rendered it impossible to acquire a proper knowledge of its different departments, during the brief time usually allotted by students to its study. We have deemed it expedient, therefore, to present this branch in a condensed form; at the same time trying to preserve whatever has been actually acquired to the science of ophthalmology. The book is divided into two parts: the first includes the pathology and treatment of eye-diseases; and the second, the operative surgery of the eye. The practical portions of the work are given with as much detail as possible, and from the experience of the author; and it is hoped they will prove a useful guide, not alone to those entering this interesting department of medicine, but also to the busy practitioner, who finds himself unable to peruse the more elaborate treatises on this subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Clinical Ophthalmology for the General Practitioner When one reflects that probably 95 per cent. Of the cases a general practitioner meets in his daily work are undiagnosable from the text book point of view, the conclusion is forced upon one that it is time a change was made in the authorship of these books. The reason that text-books assume their peculiar features is that disease has been classified on the basis of the pathology of individual organs. The pathological state is not recognised until the disease has advanced so far as to produce a physical sign or until the patient has reached the post-mortem table. As, however, people with impaired health rarely Show these characteristic signs, and then only late in their history, it is manifest that the text-book description can only refer to advanced stages of disease. As the vast majority of people whom a general practitioner sees are people without those physical signs of advanced disease, it can be seen why text-books are so useless. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Clinical Ophthalmology It has been our purpose in the following pages to place before the undergraduate and general practitioner of medi cine, a brief review of the anatomy, physiology, refraction, and common diseases of the eye. No attempt has been made to treat the subjects exhaustively. Simplicity and brevity of statement have not been sacrificed to the mere attractiveness of literary finish. We have, in a word, endeavored in good faith, to make the volume conform to the purpose for which it was written, by giving it the character, directness, and practicability of clinical teaching and practice. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Student's Guide to Diseases of the Eye The aim of this little book is to supply students with the information they most need on diseases of the eye during their hospital course. It was appa rent from the beginning that the task would be a difficult one, all the more as several excellent manuals, covering nearly the same ground, are already before the public. That no one of them singly appeared exactly to cover the ground most important for the first beginner in clinical Ophthalmology encouraged me to attempt the present work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ophthalmology of General Practice During the earlier part of my professional life I was engaged for several years in a busy general practice. Always interested in Ophthalmology, and with a certain amount of special training, I endeavoured to turn this knowledge to account, but was soon forced to realize my limitations in this respect. Unfortunately, the patient too often does not recognize such limitations, but expects his medical man to be an expert in all branches of medicine and surgery. In my difficulties I consulted various well-known textbooks on Ophthalmology, but in vain. They gave me excellent advice as to treatment in cases I was unable to diagnose; they appeared to me, in fact, to proceed on the assumption that I knew more than I really did, and, in order thoroughly to understand many parts of these works, a good deal of preliminary study was necessary, the time for which I could ill afford. I therefore reluctantly gave up treating diseases of the eye altogether. I do not defend that attitude. I am convinced, indeed, that the general practitioner can and ought to undertake treatment and give advice in many ophthalmic cases; and even when he does not profess to do so, he may occasionally find himself in a position in which he will be forced to express an opinion and initiate some line of treatment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of the Diseases of the Eye: And Their Treatment The Third Edition of this book was published in October, 1890, and I am gratified that the work continues to find favor, not only with students, for whom it is mainly intended, but also with practitioners. The book has now again been revised throughout, and brought up to date. In an Appendix, Holmgren's Method for Testing the Color Sense has been described in greater detail than before. Some new illustrations have been added. The great difficulty of an author in the preparation of a book like this consists in "Saying not all he might, but all he ought." It is his duty to give a succinct and practical account of his subject in its most modern aspect, without weighting his pages with excessive detail and prolonged discussion. This has been my aim. For deeper and wider information, larger handbooks, and original monographs, must be consulted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Practical Ophthalmology Ophthalmology has long held a foremost place amongst the various branches of Medicine. In diagnosis, as well as in treatment, it had already attained to a high degree of precision at a time when modern scientific methods had as yet barely begun to foreshadow the results which they are now almost daily achieving in other departments. Having thus early taken a leading position, the possibilities of further advance seem in the meantime to have been proportionately restricted. Coincident with the rapid strides made in surgery generally, and with the many discoveries which seem not unlikely to lead eventually to real therapeutic advances in internal medicine. Ophthalmology has practically been at a standstill. This being so, and as there are already not a few text-books on diseases of the eye, an addition to their number can hardly claim to be called for because of the latest developments of the subject being either very extensive or very important. A large experience as a teacher has, however, shown me that an adequate appreciation of the nature and treatment of even the commoner forms of eye disease is far from being general. I venture to hope, therefore, that there may)e room for a treatise which is both short and essentially practical, and which, while representing without unnecessary detail current opinions as to pathology, gives expression to the authors individual experience as regards diagnosis and treatment.
