Book excerpt: One Hundred Years of Chromosome Research: What Remains to be Learned, offers the reader a critical analysis of the observations and experiments that shaped the last 100 years of chromosome research, as well as the ideas which prevailed during this period. Emphasis is placed on what remains to be learned, particularly in light of reality of the sequencing of DNA which leaves the previous era of chromosome research as a prehistoric event. It is at this turning point, that well formulated questions can be asked about many of the chromosome's properties, which remain to be unveiled. The author, Lima-de-Faria is Professor Emeritus of Molecular Cytogenetics at Lund Unviersity, Sweden, previously Head of the Institute of Molecular Cytogenetics, Lund University.

Book excerpt: This book is a compilation of high-yield, at-a-glance summaries for various topics on which pathologists frequently need information in a quick reference format while at the microscope (or when cramming for the boards). The authors are early-career pathologists who have compiled this book from the perspective of pathologists-in-training. The focus is not organ-based histologic criteria, but rather everything else that goes into pathologic diagnoses but is difficult to keep committed to memory. The emphasis is on immunohistochemistry, special stains, grading systems, molecular markers, tumor syndromes, and helpful clinical references. The book has a unique format in that the information is presented primarily in tables and diagrams accompanied by minimal explanatory text. It is intended to serve as a ‘peripheral brain’ for pathology residents and also practicing pathologists, where frequently needed information is readily accessible and easy to navigate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ultrastructure of the Animal Cell examines the ultrastructure of the animal cell, with emphasis on the chemical, biochemical, and physiological aspects of the cell. Discussions are organized around the interphase cell and cell division and cover topics ranging from the general structure and molecular models of cell membranes to the ultrastructure of the nucleus and the cytosome. Changes in cell ultrastructure during embryogenesis, differentiation, and secretion are also considered. This monograph is divided into nine chapters and opens with an introduction to the principles and techniques of electron microscopy. The next section is about the interphase cell and first presents an overview of the animal cell before proceeding with an analysis of the ultrastructure of the nucleus and the cytosome, paying particular attention to the plasma membrane and associated structures; the hyaloplasm; endoplasmic reticulum; the Golgi complex; and mitochondria. The changes that occur in the ultrastructure of the cell during embryogenesis, differentiation, and secretion are also described. The last section focuses on cell division and the ultrastructure of the dividing cell. This text will be a useful resource for cell biologists, biochemists, and physiologists, as well as students and teachers of biology, biochemistry, and physiology.

Book excerpt: The Cell Nucleus, Volume I reports the basic concepts of cell nucleus, including nuclear structure, the interaction between the nucleus and cytoplasm, and the chromatin. This volume first describes the nucleus' morphological structures and relates these structures to its functions. It then discusses nuclear organization in plant cells; morphology and biochemistry of the slime mold nucleus; and structure, function, and properties of nuclear envelope. In addition, it addresses the molecular movements between nucleus and cytoplasm against a concentration gradient, presents experiments with animal cell heterokaryons, and explains the genome in specialized cells. It also explores the organization of the chromatin fiber; the human chromosome structure before and after banding; and the ultrastructure and function of heterochromatin and euchromatin.

The broad scope of this topic prevents the discussion of certain individual aspects in any detail. For this purpose, some of the more specialised review articles should be consulted. However, the present volume will contribute to a more general understanding of histone biochemistry and will provide stimulation, as well as source references, to the student of the cell nucleus and its functions.

Book excerpt: Plant Physiology: A Treatise, Volume VIC: Physiology of Development: From Seeds to Sexuality deals with the physiology of development in angiosperms, from seeds to sexuality. This book treats germination and cell division, growth, and development from a single point of view, emphasizing the problems of early development in flowering plants. This volume begins with an introduction to the process of germination, focusing on the dispersal unit that emerges at some stage in the life cycle of plants, seed viability and dormancy, and properties of seed components. The following chapters discuss cell division in higher plants, the importance of cell expansion for the growth of the whole plant, and the sexuality of angiosperms. Topics such as meiosis in the anther and the ovule, male spores and gametophytes, and the embryo sac are discussed in detail. This book concludes with problems that arise, and points of view that emerge, as development is considered in the light of genetics. This book is a valuable resource for researchers, students, and specialists in related fields who wish to gain insights on the concepts and research trends in the physiology of development in flowering plants.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the result of a NATO Advanced Study Institute held in England at Kingswood Hall of Residence, Royal Holloway College (London University), Surrey, during the last two weeks of July, 1976. The ASI was organized within the guide lines laid down by the Scientific Affairs Division of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. During the past two decades, significant advances have been made in our understanding of vertebrate evolution. The purpose of the Institute was to present the current status of our know ledge of vertebrate evolution above the species level. Since the subject matter was obviously too broad to be covered adequately in the limited time available, selected topics, problems, and areas which are applicable to vertebrate zoology as a whole were reviewed. The program was divided into three areas: (1) the theory and methodology of phyletic inference and approaches to the an alysis of macroevolutionary trends as applied to vertebrates; (2) the application of these methodological principles and an alytical processes to different groups and structures, particular ly in anatomy and paleontology; (3) the application of these re sults to classification. The basic principles considered in the first area were outlined in lectures covering the problems of character analysis, functional morphology, karyological evidence, biochemical evidence, morphogenesis, and biogeography.
