Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stratigraphic Policy of the Illinois State Geological Survey It is not the intent of this report to establish an inviolate code, because the nature of sedimentary rocks makes it imperative to allow for flexibility and for future changes. It is our hope that this statement of policy, while providing a needed degree of uniformity in stratigraphic classification and nomenclature in Survey publications, will at the same time increase the flexibility of the classification, and will direct attention to fundamental problems in this field. Nor is it our intent at this time to revise the ranking and nomenclature of the entire stratigraphic column of Illinois to conform to the present statement. Specific changes will be made only after study of individual parts of the column. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stratigraphic and Sedimentologic Aspects of the Lemont Drift of Northeastern Illinois The Lemont drift occurs southwest of Chicago. Field and laboratory studies have provided additional information as to its age and source and contributed to knowledge of its environment of deposition. Two fraction analyses of the Lemont till show that dolomite is dominant in size ranges from mm. To at least 256 mm., chert has a restricted size range, crystallines are in negligible abundance, and the clay fraction is composed of illite and quartz. This evidence supports a hypothesis of local derivation for most of the Lemont drift larger than mm. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stratigraphy and Petrography of Illinoian and Kansan Drift in Central Illinois The contrast between the relatively fresh glacial morphology of the Buffalo Hart drift plain and the subdued topography of the Jacksonville surface and the presence of lacustrine deposits between the two drifts suggest the possibility of a significant break in the Illinoian glacial sequence at this stratigraphic position. However, no weathered zone was found-between the drifts, and the degree of development of the Sangamon Soil does not vary greatly on the two drifts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Student's Handbook of Stratigraphical Geology Further, in three cases I have ventured to express these conclusions in the form of cartographical restorations, i.e. Of the Lower Devonian, the Upper Trias, and the Lower Cretaceous. Such maps form a conspicuous feature in the later editions of de Lapparent's treatise, but have not yet been inserted in an English text-book. In a future edition I may be able to include maps of other epochs; meantime, I would suggest that students should endeavour to make their Own geographical restorations from the descriptions which I have given. I need hardly seek to justify such advice, for, as Professor Watts has remarked, such maps group together numbers Of facts and inferences with which it was previously difficult to retain touch they systematise future research, they direct to the places where the discovery Of new facts is desirable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Geologic Making of Southern Illinois Reduced to its last analysis. Science is the search for the reasons for things. Every man of science knows that every phenomenon in nature has a cause, a reason, and just as truly every phenomenon has an effect. The search for the causal relations of all these phenomena is his task. If he is unable to discover a reason for the facts which he observes, he does not appeal to some supernatural explanation he knows that his researches have not yet penetrated far enough into his problem. The men of science of our generation are those in whom the sense of curiosity concerning nature is most keenly developed. They are continually asking themselves the question, Why and are never satisfied until some reasonable and logical ex planation is found. Every child starts his career as an active researcher. He observes all sorts of phenomena about him which arouse his curiosity, and he repeatedly asks the question Whv All too often his questioning soon surpasses the ability of his parents and teachers to make answer and he is told not to ask such foolish questions. Doubtless many an able man of science has been lost through the stifling of childish question ing. Fortunately a few remain in whom this curiosity cannot be stifled, else the progress of our race would come to a stand still.
