Book Synopsis Handbook of Companion Animal Ecloparasites by : Fred Knapp
Download or read book Handbook of Companion Animal Ecloparasites written by Fred Knapp and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 2002-01 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anyone who has owned a pet will know that there are a huge number of pests that can infect their animal. These pests include mites, ticks, fleas, flies, lice, gnats etc (or ectoparasites). In veterinary parasitology, ectoparasites assume greater prominence than in other parasitological disciplines. An understanding of the biology, behaviour and distribution of these ectoparasites along with the diagnosis and treatment of them is essential for vets, breeders and pet owners alike. There is increasing public concern over zoonoses. The Entomological Society of America has published a series of Handbooks (4 in total) called the ESA Pest Handbook Series. Titles are Handbook of Household and Structural Insect Pests, Handbook of Corn Insects, Handbook of Soybean Insect Pests and Handbook of Turfgrass Insect Pests. All of these handbooks retail at $30 for members and $37.00 for non-members and are four color throughout, are 8.5 x 11 and around 160 pages. There are a further 4 handbooks in development, one of which is this title on Handbook of Companion Animal Ectoparasites. Alan Kahan, Director of Communications at ESA approached me about the possibility of Blackwell publishing the ectoparasite book. Reasons being that ESA do not have good marketing channels to the veterinary community. In further discussions with Alan it's clear that the Handbooks haven't done well for the ESA. They are too cheaply priced and haven't been well managed. For the 4 Handbooks in development the publishing committee have decided to outsource publication to other publishers. The 3 other handbooks have been offered to the American Phytopathological Society who have a big publishing program themselves. The Science Division have been looking for ways to get closer to ESA to initiate discussions on their journal publishing. I have tried to open discussions with Alan, but at this stage it is only their book publishing that is under review. However it can only help for us to start working with them in publishing capacity, even if it is on a small scale.
