Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Courses Open to Women in British, Continental and Canadian Universities: Supplement for 1897 Compiled for the Graduate Club of Bryn Mawr College It was stated in the preface of the "Handbook of Courses Open to Women in British, Continental and Canadian Universities," published in 1896, that it was the intention of the Graduate Club of Bryn Mawr College to issue a new edition of the Handbook yearly. When, however, the material for a new edition, to be published in 1897, was collected, it was found that the corrections needed consisted mainly of changes in the lists of professors and lecturers, and that the descriptive accounts of the different universities and colleges required little alteration. It seemed, therefore, advisable to issue, in place of a new edition, a "Supplement" in the form of a table of corrigenda and addenda. The Supplement is arranged alphabetically in the same manner as the Handbook, and a comparison of the information given in the Handbook with that given in the Supplement shows the changes made during the year 1896-97. Every effort has been made to obtain the most recent information in regard to new appointments and changes in the different faculties, and the particulars given in the Handbook have been submitted to officials of the institutions dealt with for their correction and approval. Accounts of the University of Helsingfors, the new Davy Faraday Research Laboratory, the London School of Economics and Political Science, the Oxford University Extension Summer School, the Alliance Franchise, and of several other institutions, have been added. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A systematic survey and comparison of the work of 19th-century American and British women in scientific research, this book covers the two countries in which women of the period were most active in scientific work and examines all the fields in which they were engaged. The field-by-field examination brings out patterns and concentrations in women's research (in both countries) and allows a systematic comparison of the two national groups. Through this comparison, new insights are provided into how the national patterns developed and what they meant, in terms of both the process of women's entry into research and the contributions they made there. Ladies in the Laboratory? features a specialized bibliography of nineteenth century research journal publications by women, created from the London Royal Society's Catalogue of Scientific Papers, 1800-1900. In addition, 23 illustrations present in condensed form information about American and British women's scientific publications throughout the nineteenth century. This well-organized blend of individual life stories and quantitative information presents a great deal of new data and field-by-field analysis; its broad and methodical coverage will make it a basic work for everyone interested in the story of women's participation in nineteenth century science.

Book Synopsis University Coeducation in the Victorian Era by : C. Myers
Download or read book University Coeducation in the Victorian Era written by C. Myers and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-07-19 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: University Coeducation in the Victorian Era chronicles the inclusion of women in state-supported male universities during the nineteenth century. Based on primary sources produced by the administrators, faculty, and students, or other contemporary Victorian writers, this book provides insight from multiple perspectives of an important step in the progress of gender relations in higher education and society at large. By studying twelve institutions in the United States, and another twelve in the United Kingdom, the comparative scope of the work is substantial and brings local, regional, national, and international questions together, while not losing sight of individual university student experiences.
