Book excerpt: Sociology offers fascinating insights into social life that tell us so much about people and society. But what can we do with those insights? How can we put them to good use? That is exactly what this book is all about. It explores the practical value of sociology, how sociological understanding can be of help in a variety of settings. Neil Thompson’s wealth of experience in using sociology in practice comes shining through in this clearly written and accessible text that succeeds in conveying complex ideas without oversimplifying them. Key concepts are explained and clear links are drawn with how the ideas can be used to inform professional practice and cast light on a wide range of situations across all sectors of working life, and in our personal lives too. So, whether you are involved in the helping professions or any other occupation where success depends on having a good understanding of people; a student of sociology wanting to put your learning into practice; or simply interested in how sociology can help address social issues, this book offers a solid foundation of understanding. It is an ideal text for anyone seeking to use sociological ideas to make a positive difference.

This book offers students a framework to explore how their professional responsibility to understanding sociology can be realised in every aspect of their work with a diverse range of service user groups including children and families, adults, older people, people with learning disabilities and people suffering from mental distress. Book excerpt: This work and its predecessor, Pure Sociology, constitute together a system of sociology, and these, with Dynamic Sociology, The Psychic Factors of Civilization, and the Outlines of Sociology, make up a more comprehensive system of social philosophy. Should any reader acquaint himself with the whole, he will find it not only consistent with itself, but progressive in the sense that each successive volume carries the subject a step farther with a minimum of repetition or duplicate treatment. The central thought is that of a true science of society, capable, in the measure that it approaches completeness, of being turned to the profit of mankind. If there is one respect in which it differs more than in others from rival systems of philosophy it is in its practical character of never losing sight of the end or purpose, nor of the possibilities of conscious effort. It is a reaction against the philosophy of despair that has come to dominate even the most enlightened scientific thought. It aims to point out a remedy for the general paralysis that is creeping over the world, and which a too narrow conception of the law of cosmic evolution serves rather to increase than to diminish. It proclaims the efficacy of effort, provided it is guided by intelligence. It would remove the embargo laid upon human activity by a false interpretation of scientific determinism, and, without having recourse to the equally false conception of a power to will, it insists upon the power to act. - Preface.

Book excerpt: The book Applied Sociology and Nursing serves as a pivotal resource bridging the disciplines of sociology and nursing, with a focus on practical applications in the healthcare field. Authored by experts in both areas, this comprehensive work provides invaluable insights into how sociological principles can be integrated into nursing practice to enhance patient care and healthcare systems. The book begins by establishing a strong theoretical foundation, exploring key sociological concepts and their relevance to nursing. It delves into topics such as social determinants of health, healthcare disparities, and the impact of culture and social structures on patient outcomes. Readers are guided through the development of a sociological imagination, enabling them to critically analyze the complex social factors that influence health and healthcare delivery. As the book progresses, it offers practical strategies and case studies that demonstrate how nurses can apply sociological principles in their daily practice. This includes addressing issues related to patient communication, cultural competence, ethical dilemmas, and advocacy for marginalized populations. Additionally, the book explores the role of nurses in healthcare policy and advocacy, empowering them to become catalysts for positive change within the healthcare system. Applied Sociology and Nursing is an indispensable resource for nursing students, educators, and practising nurses looking to deepen their understanding of the societal forces shaping healthcare. It equips them with the knowledge and skills needed to provide more holistic, patient-centred care and contribute to the advancement of healthcare as a whole.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outline of Applied Sociology This book is intended to be just what its title suggests - an outline of applied sociology. Dealing with applied sociology, it concerns itself but little with questions of origins, and devotes itself to facts rather than to theories. Being an outline, it is meant to serve rather as a guide to the study of life in society than as a compendium of dogmatic sociological conclusions or a series of finished dissertations on social problems. In the preparation of this work I have been animated by the conviction that the time is ripe for a more thoroughly scientific approach to the solution of the problems of social advancement. There is too much of a tendency to treat each question as a thing by itself, and to forget that life in society is not divided into watertight compartments. I have therefore departed from the method of treatment customary in books of this order, and have sought to take a comprehensive view of the entire field of social life and social endeavor, to correlate in a systematic and logical manner the manifold aspects of the social organization, and to indicate the actual interrelationship between seemingly divergent departments of life. This I believe to be the true, and therefore the scientific view. Accordingly in this book much more emphasis is laid on accurate analysis and classification than upon the exhaustive treatment of specific topics. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This engaging two-volume study pursues a balance between theoretical and practical sociology. The authors are aware of the impasse often deliberately created by the self-conscious language of sociological theory. The primary concern of the applied sociologist is to adapt theoretical knowledge to actual human situations, using it to formulate social policy, investigate domestic and international social problems and create a pragmatic 'sociology of possibility'. Volume I, subtitled 'Theoretical Perspectives', focuses on the problems and prospects of applied sociology in an era of globalization. The essays emphasize the close association of applied sociology with altruism, identity formation, race and ethnicity. They evaluate the empirical 'truths' of sociological theories and examine their relevance for contemporary research, poverty, demographic issues and social policies. The authors agree that the ultimate test of theory is the extent to which it can produce knowledge that 'works'.
