Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook for Hospital Sisters The present little volume is an attempt to strengthen one corps in that army which is battling with the evils that prey on our great urban populations, or which desolate the rural homes of our agricultural classes. Completely to appreciate the place of nursing in our body politic needs a little attention. Miss Nightingale first startled this country by making familiar the idea that a cultivated woman of gentle birth could safely leave a wealthy home for the lines of a sickly camp, and staunch the wounds and tend the fevers of an army in the field. She first showed how great a work is here for woman, but at the same time how requisite are training, in struction, and organisation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Moral Problems in Hospital Practice: A Practical Handbook The purpose that has led to the preparation of this manual is revealed in its arrangement. Sisters in charge of hospitals are at times placed in very sudden and very grave doubts about the moral legitimacy of certain surgical operations. The cases giving rise to these doubts are very often emergency cases, and they not unfrequently involve questions of life and death, and hence call for an immediate decision, which a Sister finds it impossible to give under existing circumstances. Many Catholic hospitals in the West are located in towns in which there is but one priest. It may occur that the local priest happens to be engaged in parochial work away from the rectory, just at the time a Sister desires to appeal to him for a decision; or, if the priest is reached without delay, the case presented to him may be of such a complex nature that it is practically impossible for him to give a prompt and definite decision, owing to the fact that he may not have at hand such works as will enable him to arrive at a satisfactory understanding of the essential points involved in the case. Excerpt: ...to cultivate the habit of giving each fresh worker a kindly welcome. However much this may become a matter of form to the Sister, each individual who receives it will be grateful for it; and those who are very shy and retiring will feel an appreciation out of all proportion to the insignificance of the act. It is not difficult to conceive the state of mind common to many a new Probationer on her arrival at the Hospital, apart from her individual character. She has probably been kindly welcomed and partaken of the usual cup of tea to begin with. She has been allowed time to unpack, and then finds herself ready to be taken to the appointed ward. She wears her uniform for the first time, and that, being as yet unaccustomed, gives her rather an awkward, uncomfortable feeling. She is conducted through a building the size of which, while it is yet strange, appears somewhat bewildering, and in all probability she is secretly wondering how she will ever manage to learn her way about it. If when she is introduced to "Sister" she has a chilling and indifferent reception, the feeling of desolation that will creep over her is a sensation that she may smile at afterwards, when she is quite at home, but one that she will not easily forget, and that she would not willingly experience a second time. Of course the effect will be the same on the Probationer whether the apparent coldness on Sister's part arises because she is engaged with the doctors, or busy with a bad case, or whether it is simply a result of the selfish indifference which is occasionally to be met with, and so much to be deplored. But if it is the Sister's habit to welcome all new-comers, she will have impressed her Nurses with the importance of kindly greetings, and one of them will...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Reference Handbook of Obstetric Nursing It is assumed by the author that the foundation of the nurse's general knowledge has been laid at the hospital bed-side. The author aims to present the details of his subject in simple form, so that they may be fixed permanently in the reader's mind. He recognizes that a text-book of this character should deal with the practical points which, when mastered, consti tute the nurse's stock of knowledge, rather than with medical considerations. Thanks are due Mrs. Mary E. Baker, former Superintendent of the Philadelphia Lying - in Charity, for suggestions in the presentation of the subject suitably for the undergraduate nurse; also Miss Helen M. Patterson for her advice in carry ing out the practical arrangement of the subject. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Hand-Book of Nursing for Family and General Use This hand-book of Nursing was prepared for theiuse Of the training-school for Nurses in the State Hospital, New Haven, Connecticut. The committee who have the oversight of this institution thought it important that a summary Of practical directions Should be placed in the hands Of nurses, so simple as to be easily understood, and so comprehensive as to provide for the ordinary rou tine Of duties among the Sick. Though brief in lan guage and simple in its form, it is the fruit of the ex perience Of years in the supervision Of hospital cases and duties. The position and character of the ladies who have supervised its preparation, and Of the profes sional gentlemen who have given it their sanction, are such as to entitle it to the confidence Of the public. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What effect does religion have on physical and mental health? In answering this question, this book reviews and discusses research on the relationship between religion and a variety of mental and physical health outcomes, including depression and anxiety; heart disease, stroke, and cancer; and health related behaviors such as smoking and substance abuse. The authors examine the positive and negative effects of religion on health throughout the life span, from childhood to old age. Based on their findings, they build theoretical models illustrating the behavioral, psychological, social, and physiological pathways through which religion may influence health. The authors also review research on the impact of religious affiliation, belief, and practice on the use of health services and compliance with medical treatment. In conclusion, they discuss the clinical relevance of their findings and make recommendations for future research priorities. Offering the first comprehensive examination of its topic, this volume is an indispensable resource for research scientists, health professionals, public policy makers, and anyone interested in the relationship between religion and health.
