Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the basic aspects of Code Division Multiple Access or CDMA. It begins with an introduction to the basic ideas behind fixed and random access systems in order to demonstrate the difference between CDMA and the more widely understood TDMA, FDMA or CSMA. Secondly, a review of basic spread spectrum techniques are presented which are used in CDMA systems including direct sequence, frequency-hopping and time-hopping approaches. The basic concept of CDMA is presented, followed by the four basic principles of CDMA systems that impact their performance: interference averaging, universal frequency reuse, soft handoff, and statistical multiplexing. The focus of the discussion will then shift to applications. The most common application of CDMA currently is cellular systems. A detailed discussion on cellular voice systems based on CDMA, specifically IS-95, is presented. The capacity of such systems will be examined as well as performance enhancement techniques such as coding and spatial filtering. Also discussed are Third Generation CDMA cellular systems and how they differ from Second Generation systems. A second application of CDMA that is covered is spread spectrum packet radio networks. Finally, there is an examination of multi-user detection and interference cancellation and how such techniques impact CDMA networks. This book should be of interest and value to engineers, advanced students, and researchers in communications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past several years have been exciting for wireless communications. The public appetite for new services and equipment continues to grow. The Second Generation systems that have absorbed our attention during recent years will soon be commercial realities. In addition to these standard systems, we see an explosion of technical alternatives for meeting the demand for wireless communications. The debates about competing solutions to the same problem are a sign of the scientific and technical immaturity of our field. Here we have an application in search of technology rather than the reverse. This is a rare event in the information business. Happily, there is a growing awareness that we can act now to prevent the technology shortage from becoming more acute at the end of this decade. By then, market size and user expectations will surpass the capabilities of today's emerging systems. Third Generation Wireless Information Networks will place even greater burdens on technology than their ancestors. To discuss these issues, Rutgers University WINLAB plays host to a series of Workshops on Third Generation Wireless Information Networks. The first one, in 1989, had the flavor of a gathering of committed enthusiasts of an interesting niche of telephony. Presentations and discussions centered on the problems of existing cellular systems and technical alternatives to alleviating them. Although the more distant future was the announced theme of the Workshop, it drew only a fraction of our attention.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This conference in Enschede, The Netherlands, is the sixth in a series of international conferences and workshops under the title Protocols for Multimedia Systems, abbreviated as PROMS. The first PROMS workshop took place in June 1994 in Berlin, Germany, followed by workshops in Salzburg, Austria (October 1995) and Madrid, Spain (October 1996). In 1997, PROMS formed a temporary alliance with Multimedia Networking, a conference previously held in Aizu, Japan, in 1995. This led to the international conference on Protocols for Multimedia Systems – Multimedia Networking, PROMS MmNet, that took place in Santiago, Chile (November 1997). Since then PROMS has been announced as an international conference, although informal contacts and interactive sessions – as in a workshop – were retained as a desirable feature of PROMS. After a gap of three years, PROMS was organized in Cracow, Poland (October 2000), for the fifth time. We consider it a challenge to make this sixth edition of PROMS as successful as the previous events. The goal of the PROMS series of conferences and workshops is to contribute to scientific, strategic, and practical cooperation between research institutes and industrial companies in the area of multimedia protocols. This is also the goal of PROMS 2001. The basic theme of this conference continues to be multimedia protocols, both at the network and application level, although the increasing interest in wireless, mobility, and quality of service as interrelated topics with relevance to multimedia are reflected in the current program.

Book excerpt: Wireless communication is one of the fastest growing fields in the engineering world today. Rapid growth in the domain of wireless communication systems, services and application has drastically changed the way we live, work and communicate. Wireless communication offers a broad and dynamic technological field, which has stimulated incredible excitements and technological advancements over last few decades. The expectations from wireless communication technology are increasing every day. This is placing enormous challenges to wireless system designers. Moreover, this has created an ever increasing demand for conceptually strong and well versed communication engineers who understand the wireless technology and its future possibilities. In recent years, significant progress in wireless communication system design has taken place, which will continue in future. Especially for last two decades, the research contributions in wireless communication system design have resulted in several new concepts and inventions at remarkable speed. A text book is indeed required to offer familiarity with such developments and underlying concepts, to be taught in the classroom to future engineers. This is one of the motivations for writing this book. Practically no book can be up to date in this field, due to the fast ongoing research and developments. The new developments are announced almost every day. Teaching directly from the research papers in the classroom cannot build the necessary foundation. Therefore need for a textbook is unavoidable, which is integral to learning, and is an essential source to build the concept. The prime goal of this book is to cooperate in the learning process. This book is based on current research as well as classical text books in the field, and aims to provide in depth understanding on fundamental concepts, which form the basis of wireless communication and build the platform, on which current developments can be understood and future contributions can be made. This book is written in self-explanatory manner to facilitate critical thinking and to support self study. Special emphasis has been given in this book to systematically organize and present the wide domain of wireless communication technology. Extra care has been taken to present the contents and the concepts in user friendly way to enable an easy understanding. Therefore the language of this book is made to make one feel, listening to a classroom lecture. This makes learning straight forward. Sometimes, the explanation could seem to be oversimplified, this is in order to support wide spectrum of readers as well as to clarify the hazy picture. A book of this kind, which addresses a fast developing technology, the frequent use of acronyms and abbreviations is almost inevitable. A care has been taken to spell the acronyms and abbreviations as frequently as practically suitable in the text. Besides, a list of acronyms and abbreviations has also been provided.

Book excerpt: In April 1995, WINLAB (the Wireless Infonnation Network Lab oratory at Rutgers University) hosted the Fifth WINLAB Workshop on Third Generation Wireless Infonnation Networks. This workshop brings together a select group of experts interested in the future of Personal Communications, Mobile Computing and other services supported by wireless communications. As a sequel to Kluwer books on previous WINLAB workshops,l this volume assembles written versions of presentations of the Fifth Workshop. The last few years have been exciting for the field of wireless communications. The second generation systems that have absorbed our attention during those years are becoming commercial realities. Everyone is looking forward to PCS, especially in light of the recent auctions. We see an explosion of technical alternatives for meeting the demand for wireless communications. We also have applications in search of the best technologies rather than the reverse. The papers included provide new insights into many of the issues needing resolution for the successful introduction of the new services by the end of the decade. The authors represent views from both industry and universities from a number of nations. They are grouped into four main categories: Architecture, Radio Resource Management, Access, and Mobile Data, Mobile Networks.
