This will be done in the American edition, exceptin in the articles on the United States, as these references will be valuable to t 080 who are dis caed to pursue their inquiries beyond the bounds of a gazetteer; but, as we 0 e to present a more com plete and correct account of this country than can be derived from the authori ties quoted by the author, many of which are very valuable, but some of which have ceased to be at present correct, we shall omit a mention of the sources of our information, which would exceedingly encumber the work. In the con struction of this part of the work, fifty volumes, and as many state or other local maps, containing the latest and most authentic information, have been con sulted, besides a written corres cadence from intelligent men in all parts of the country. The late very valuab e United States census and statistics have con tributed very much to enrich this work. To encumber the work by attaching to each article the sources whence the information has been derived, would, it is believed, he unprofitable, as they are numerous. N o fact has been stated but upon what is considered the best authority. Our aim has been to present to the citizens of the United States a work, in regard to their country, on which entire reliance can be laced. A faultless work, involving so many particular facts, it would be difiicu t, and perhaps impossible, to produce.
