Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Chemistry, Theoretical, Practical, and Technical The Authors, after having received their chemical education in my laboratory, officiated for some years as my assistants, and I have had ample opportunities of witnessing their talents for imparting informa tion, and smoothing the path of the Student, in every department of analysis. The present volume is a synopsis of their experience in laboratory teaching; it gives the necessary instruction in chemical manipulation, a concise account of general chemistry, as far as it is involved in the Operations of the laboratory, and lastly, qualitative and quantitative analysis. The plan adopted in the instructions for analysis is essentially that which was first introduced by Baron Liebig, and which, modified in accordance with the progress of science, and with the special requirements of the English student, I have daily practised myself, for the last eight years, in this laboratory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Chemistry, Descriptive and Theoretical, Vol. 1 This Manual purposes, not only to satisfy a want felt, it is believed, by many teachers of Chemistry, but also to show how the employment of unitary formulae facilitates the generalisation of chemical truths. The views, of which it is an exponent, are based on those originally promulgated by Laurent and Gerhardt in France. They are now adopted by a large section of English chemists, particularly by Professors Williamson, Brodie, and Hofmann, whose researches have contributed greatly to their development. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Chemistry, Vol. 1: Principles and Applications This book has been written to meet the demand for a Simple and practical treatment of the principles and applications of Chemistry. The author realizes that demands are now being made of teachers of Chemistry which would hardly have been considered several years ago. Not only must the student be taught the principles of chemistry and their applications in daily life, but he must be taught in such a way that, Should occasion arise, he can use chemistry in earning a living. The plea SO long made that chemistry is practical and useful is now being tested. Consequently the author has kept one thought in mind during the preparation of this book, viz.: principles and applications must go hand in hand. Principles are the foundation upon which applications rest. To teach either one exclusively is hazardous, for when separated one is as barren as the other is superficial. The author has aimed to include in this book not only the principles of Chemistry universally regarded as an essential part of a well-rounded course, but also numerous practical applications. First, the text includes a clear, Simple treatment of the facts, laws, theories, and principles that serve as the foundation of chemistry. This material is written in a style which assumes that the book is to be read, studied, and used by beginners. Special efiort has been made to present very clearly such needful topics as atomic weights, equations, and valence. All of this material is made more serviceable by a liberal selection of original exercises and problems containing many novel and attractive features. Teachers will find in these exercises and problems abundant material to drive home principles and arouse interest in the vocational aspects of chemistry. Yet a lack of standardization has led to a field in which dozens of forms of EFT, with varying degrees of fidelity to the original, can be found. This led to the establishment of Clinical EFT, the form of EFT taught in the original EFT Manual and associated materials, and validated in over 20 clinical trials. In this volume, the most noted scholars, researchers and clinicians in the field compile a definitive outline of the EFT protocol, as it is applied in medicine, psychiatry, psychotherapy, and life coaching. This first volume covers • Biomedical and Physics Principles • Psychological Trauma • Fundamental Techniques of Clinical EFT. This series of handbooks is essential reading for anyone wishing to understand EFT as validated in research, science, and best clinical practice.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Chemistry, Vol. 1 of 2 It is natural to feel a desire to be acquainted with the origin and the progress of such a science; and to know something of the history and character of those numerous votaries to whom it is indebted for its pro gress and improvement. The object of this little Work is to gratify these laudable wishes, by taking a rapid View of the progress of Chemistry, from its first rude and disgraceful beginnings till it has reached its pre sent state of importance and dignity. I shall divide the subject into fifteen chapters. In'the first I shall treat of Alchymy, which may be considered as the in auspicious commencement of the science, and which, in fact, consists of little else than an account of dupes and impostors; every where so full of fiction and oh scurity, that it is a hopeless and almost impossible task to reach the truth. In the second Chapter I shall endeavour to point out the few small chemical rills, which were known to the ancients. These I shall fol low in their progress, in the succeeding chapters, till at last, augmented by an infinite number of streams owing at once from a thousand different quarters, they have swelled to the mighty river, which now ows ou majestically, wafting wealth and information to the civilized world.
