This book was released on 2014-09-24 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thesis of this book is threefold. First, contrary to the increasingly popular understanding that the nature of Ham's offense was sexual, we argue that this offense was nonsexual, despite the presence of the phrase ("to see the nakedness of") in Genesis 9:22. More specifically, Ham's offense had less to do with seeing his father naked--the seeing was accidental. Rather, his fault lay with his choice to disclose to his brothers what he had seen as opposed to covering the nakedness of his father. Second, the most probable fulfillment of the Noah's curse is (1) the servitude of the Gibeonites; (2) the enslavement of the Canaanites following the conquest; or (3) the dominance of Rome and Greece over Tyre and Carthage, respectively. the events or phenomena least associated with the curse, in our view, are the following: (1) the service of the four kings in Genesis 14 under Chedorlaomer and the king of Tidal; (2) the subjection of the Egyptians and Babylonians by the Persians; (3) the forced corvée service of the Egyptians by Pharaoh; (4) the triumph of Israel over Egypt during the Exodus; (5) the enslavement of the Africans; and (6) the African's dark skin color. Third, whereas none of the proposals offered in regards to the phrase ("let him dwell in the tents of Shem") correlate well with the exegesis of the blessing utterance, we did find a viable candidate among the proposals related to the enlargement of Japheth, viz "geographical expansion."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tudor period remains a source of timeless fascination, with endless novels, TV programmes and films depicting the period in myriad ways. And yet our image of the Tudor era remains overwhelmingly white. This ground-breaking and provocative new book seeks to redress the balance: revealing not only how black presence in Tudor England was far greater than has previously been recognised, but that Tudor conceptions of race were far more complex than we have been led to believe. Onyeka Nubia's original research shows that Tudors from many walks of life regularly interacted with people of African descent, both at home and abroad, revealing a genuine pragmatism towards race and acceptance of difference. Nubia also rejects the influence of the 'Curse of Ham' myth on Tudor thinking, persuasively arguing that many of the ideas associated with modern racism are in fact relatively recent developments. England's Other Countrymen is a bravura and eloquent forgotten history of diversity and cultural exchange, and casts a new light on our own attitudes towards race.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We often hear these days that the centre of Christianity is moving toward the Global South and Africa is a key player in that movement. This makes the study of African Christianity and African realities important – even more so when it is being done by Africans themselves in their own context. The Africa Society of Evangelical Theology (ASET) was created to encourage research and sustained theological reflection on key issues facing Africa by and for African Christians and those working within African contexts. The volumes in the ASET series constitute the best papers presented at the annual conferences of ASET and together they seek to fill this important gap in the literature of Christianity. Africa is all too familiar with suffering. Yet there is a dearth of sustained theological reflection on suffering by Africans, or for Africans. Christianity and Suffering: African Perspectives addresses this need and is the fruit of the 5th Annual Conference of the Africa Society of Evangelical Theology. The contributions address age-old issues like why God does not prevent or relieve human suffering; they wrestle with causes of suffering including witchcraft, poverty, curses, and war; and they also explore appropriate Christian responses to suffering, all from within the African context. The Africa Society of Evangelical Theology (ASET) is a professional society, founded in 2009 for the purpose of fostering evangelical theological scholarship and to facilitate collegial relationships among scholars and practitioners of the Christian religion in Africa. Its core values are: (1) Faithfulness to the Bible, (2) Professional ethics, (3) Creative and critical thinking, (4) Christ-like humility, (5) Community of scholars encouraging, respecting, and learning from one another, and (6) Development and inspiration of young scholars. Book excerpt: A mysterious figure called the “Messiah” is the central theme of the entire Bible. In this book that Messianic theme is traced from its announcement in the Old Testament through its development between the Testaments to its fulfillment in the New Testament. The book also examines how Jews and Christians have continued to debate this subject down until today. There are also some studies on fascinating related subjects like the location of the Temple and the ashes of the Red Heifer. While these chapters have been written from a Christian perspective, adequate attention has also been given to Jewish concerns. The Messiah was successively revealed, rejected and received. This book explains how and why that happened. “In this book, Will Varner has opened the Scripture to provide a readable, clarifying look at Jesus, the Messiah of Israel and the Savior of the world. Jesus once asked His disciples, ”Who do men say that I am?” (Mark 8:27). That is still the most urgent question - - who is this Jesus? You will find the answer powerfully and convincingly provided in this outstanding book.” John MacArthur, Grace Community Church, Sun Valley, CA and President of The Master’s College

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Utilizing the techniques of narratology and literary analysis, this study examines the foundational biblical text of Genesis to develop the theology of ordinary human work that emerges from it. The study offers a history of Christian theologies of human work as well as a unique approach to both the topic of work and the literary structure of Genesis. The emerging concept of blessing rather than achievement provides a refreshing and yet practical approach to human work. This is a valuable complement to the current interest in this topic, and one that, although challenging some current concepts, is encouraging.
