Book Synopsis Adversarial Case-Making by : Thomas Scheffer
Download or read book Adversarial Case-Making written by Thomas Scheffer and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010-09-24 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cases are not objects at hand for legal decision-making; cases are not echoes from a past crime. Cases are, first of all, made within compound discourse apparatus, here the English Crown Court and the procedure/s attached to it. This book reveals the legal production of cases including their relevant features. The socio-legal ethnography visits the natural sites of adversarial case-making: law firms, barristers’ chambers, and Crown Courts. It examines the role and dynamics of client-lawyer meetings, pre-trial hearings, plea bargaining sessions, and jury trials. It focuses on the lawyers’ case-making activities, their procedural contexts, and the resulting cases. As an ethnographic discourse study, the book develops a trans-sequential perspective on the interrelated events and processes of case-making – and by doing so, overcomes the shortcomings of talk-bias and text-bias. The trans-sequential approach pays out in detailed case studies on an alibi, on guilt, or the barrister’s notes; it pays out as well in cross-case studies dealing with legal care, procedural infrastructure, or the case system in the common law tradition.
Download or read book Insurance Law written by Ray Hodgin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-26 with total page 942 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insurance law is a complex and fast-moving area of law, making it difficult for the law student to grasp. This is the first book to bring together a wide range of insurance materials with an introductory text to each chapter. This second edition has been completely updated and includes recent House of Lords and other significant judgments, as well as supervisory changes by means of legislation and codes of conduct. Each chapter starts with a stand-alone text, which provides the student with a clear explanation of the topic under consideration and is then followed by illustrative materials. Whilst the book concentrates on the general principles of insurance law, it inevitably draws on examples (cases and legislation) taken from the main branches of motor, property, marine and liability insurance. Throughout the book there is an emphasis on law reform by means of comparison with other jurisdictions. The book is designed for students studying insurance law at undergraduate level. It would also be suitable for students studying for the Chartered Insurance Institute examinations.

Book Synopsis Manual of Law French by : John Hamilton Baker
Download or read book Manual of Law French written by John Hamilton Baker and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most English legal texts before 1600, and many before 1700, are written in law French. This book is the first glossary to be produced since 1779 and is intended for students and practitioners concerned with English legal history. A knowledge of French and Latin helps in understanding law French, but even so many words are not easily recognisable, and differences of usage constitute a new dialect. The glossary provides a list of the words most commonly found in English legal texts together with English meanings and (where appropriate) Latin equivalents or etymologies. Introductory chapters provide a brief history of the law French dialect; notes and tables for the conjugation of verbs in law French; common abbreviations and contractions, including the 'black letter' typographical symbols; and a bibliography of specialised works relating to law French.
