Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Half-Forgotten Romances of American History It was winter in Virginia, A. D. 1607. Gone were the Italian blue skies of the spring and summer which had charmed the Jamestown settlers when the ships Godspeed, Susan Constant and the Discovery sailed up the Powhatan River, rechristened by the voyagers the "James" in honor of the King of England. The dogwood, wild cherry, crab apple, mulberry and persimmon trees had lost their blooms, but here and there through grim, white woods gleamed the red of the holly tree. On giant oaks clustered the white berry of the mistletoe, a strange reminder to the Englishmen of the Druid faith of their forefathers. In the Indian village, Werowocomoco, on the York River, lived the mighty Powhatan, chief of the region. The village was situated about three miles above the present Yorktown, where the lion of England surrendered in later years to the lion's cub, America. It was one of three capital villages of the Powhatan confederation of Indians. The others were Orapakes, on the Chickahominy River, near Powhatan, and Powhatan, near the present site of the city of Richmond. Werowocomoco was composed of 25 or 30 wigwams or houses built of saplings. These were planted at regular distances like posts, then bent over and tied together in the middle. The houses were built up by skillful application of barks and grasses adroitly interwoven. Their shape was either oblong or circular. Sixty stalwart warriors guarded the sacred person of Powhatan. Powhatan's domestic relations are quaintly put: "He had a multiplicity of women." It is apparent that Powhatan, in common with other royalties, followed King Solomon's practical advice and brought upon himself marital trouble by adding rather than reducing possibilities in the number of wives. Powhatan, however, had one kingly prerogative lesser mortals lack in these more progressive days. If he tired of a wife, he gave her away to a friend as a token of royal favor. Such an improvement on the modern divorce court! T. R. would have rejoiced in Powhatan's family. He had twenty sons and twelve daughters. In his pen por traits of Lincoln and analyses of his unique character the author has been aided by the memories of his father, who was a friend of Lincoln. During the last years of Jefferson Davis' life the author was one of his inner circle of friends and he has drawn on his own recollections in portraying the great but ill-starred Cavalier. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Better known as a journalist and correspondent during the American Civil War, George Alfred Townsend was also an author of fiction. Townsend combined the two, fiction and journalism, in The Entailed Hat, or Patty Cannon's Times: A Romance. This novel provides readers with an account of the life and crimes of Martha "Patty" Cannon. Patty Cannon was a criminal leader who lived in the Delmarva Peninsula region of the United States. The gang that she led was responsible for the kidnapping and sale of slaves and free blacks from the area to plantation owners in the South. Told from the perspective of a newsman decades after the crimes were committed, the story is a semi-fictionalized account of Cannon's crimes and the racial prejudice that made them possible. It is a tragic story of the failure of humanity that includes a romantic storyline. While the historical accuracy of Townsend's book is unproven, it remains one of the most detailed accounts of this period in history. Townsend was a gifted writer, and the author brings his experience as a war correspondent to this book. While presented as a novel, the book is ripe with factual details. Townsend builds an engaging romance story to further the narrative, but remains always focused on the terrible actions of Patty Cannon and her gang of criminals. As both a fictionalized story of romance and an account of a dark period in history, The Entailed Hat, or Patty Cannon's Times is a fascinating read. The historical significance of the subject matter makes Townsend's novel affecting in a way few novels are and readers interested in a novel rooted in truth will find this to be a highly engrossing book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Carolina Cavalier: A Romance of the American Revolution Along the rude and tumble-down wharves the only activities were those of buzzing insects, flying about with no other apparent purpose than that of fanning themselves with weary wings. Three British ships of war lay like logs in the harbor, with scorching decks and with sails spread out in the listless air to dry, if that might be, in an atmosphere saturated with va por that just missed being steam. A dozen or so small boats of varying shapes and charac ters were drawn up on the blistering sands of the beach and covered with tarpaulins as a pro tection against the warping, seam-opening in tensity of the vertical sunbeams. Book excerpt: Excerpt from After Many Days: An Anglo-American Romance To the right of the lane, fields of corn sweep away to the skirts of a distant wood, whose gloomy stretches of fir and pine make fitting contrast for silver birch and youthful oak. At no season of the year is this road unbeautiful. The great hedge is perhaps fairest in its young green glory of the spring; or it is as fair when the giant brambles show cloud on cloud of clustered blossoms, or when the clouds melt and the petals drift like perfumed snow and leave the little berries to grow and blacken and glisten in the yellow autumn sun. One warm summer's day two girls came wandering down the road. Oh, Addice, isn't it true, cried one, that all the biggest blackberries and all the loveliest honeysuckle grow right on the top where we can't reach them? And in the west a strip of blue sky, which was growing every moment larger and larger, showed that the weather would be clear and bitterly cold. The sun was not far from the horizon, and Lydia, seated by one of the windows, was watching a flock of snow-birds hopping about out side, picking up a handful of crumbs she had thrown them. Presently a gust of wind struck the house, making it tremble so, that she half believed it was going to rise and blowr away.
