Book Synopsis Molecular Symmetry and Spectroscopy by : Philip R. Bunker
Download or read book Molecular Symmetry and Spectroscopy written by Philip R. Bunker and published by NRC Research Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 778 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition, by P.R. Bunker, published in 1979, remains the sole textbook that explains the use of the molecular symmetry group in understanding high resolution molecular spectra. Since 1979 there has been considerable progress in the field and a second edition is required; the original author has been joined in its writing by Per Jensen. The Material of the first edition has been reorganized and much has been added. The molecular symmetry group is now introduced early on, and the explanation of how to determine nuclear spin statistical weights has been consolidated in one chapter, after groups, symmetry groups, character tables and the Hamiltonian have been introduced. A description of the symmetry in the three-dimensional rotation group K(spatial), irreducible spherical tensor operators, and vector coupling coefficients is now included. The chapters on energy levels and selection rules contain a great deal of material that was not in the first edition (much of it was undiscovered in 1979), concerning the Jahn-Teller effect, the Renner effect, Multichannel Quantum Defect Theory, the use of variational methods for calculating rotational-vibration energy levels, and the contact transformed rotation-vibration Hamiltonian. A new chapter is devoted entirely to weakly bound cluster molecules (often called Van der Waals molecules). A selection of experimental spectra is included in order to illustrate particular theoretical points.
Book Synopsis Extreme Photonics & Applications by : Trevor Hall
Download or read book Extreme Photonics & Applications written by Trevor Hall and published by Springer. This book was released on 2009-11-24 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Extreme Photonics & Applications" arises from the 2008 NATO Advanced Study Institute in Laser Control & Monitoring in New Materials, Biomedicine, Environment, Security and Defense. Leading experts in the manipulation of light offered by recent advances in laser physics and nanoscience were invited to give lectures in their fields of expertise and participate in discussions on current research, applications and new directions. The sum of their contributions to this book is a primer for the state of scientific knowledge and the issues within the subject of photonics taken to the extreme frontiers: molding light at the ultra-finest scales, which represents the beginning of the end to limitations in optical science for the benefit of 21st Century technological societies. Laser light is an exquisite tool for physical and chemical research. Physicists have recently developed pulsed lasers with such short durations that one laser shot takes the time of one molecular vibration or one electron rotation in an atom, which makes it possible to observe their internal electronic structure, thereby enabling the study of physical processes and new chemical reactions. In parallel, advances in micro- and nano-structured photonic materials allow the precise manipulation of light on its natural scale of a wavelength. Photonic crystals, plasmons and related metamaterials - composed of subwavelength nanostructures - permit the manipulation of their dispersive properties and have allowed the experimental confirmation of bizarre new effects such as slow light and negative refraction. These advances open a vista on a new era in which it is possible to build lasers and engineer materials to control and use photons as precisely as it is already possible to do with electrons. http://www.photonics.uottawa.ca/nato-asi-2008/
Book Synopsis Topics in Atomic and Nuclear Collisions by : B. Remaud
Download or read book Topics in Atomic and Nuclear Collisions written by B. Remaud and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ASI 'Topics in Atomic and Nuclear Collisions' was organized in Predeal from August 31 to September 11. It brought together people with a broad interest in Atomic and Nuclear Physics from several research institutes and universities in Ro mania and 16 other countries. The school continues a tradition that started on a small scale back in 1968, fo cussing mainly on current problems in nuclear physics. Though the organizing of this edition started very late and in very uncertain economic and financial conditions, it turned out to be the largest meeting of this type ever organized in Romania, both in topics and participation. There were many applicants for participation and grants, considerably more than could be handled. The selection made by the local organizing committee was based on the following criteria: a proper balance of atomic and nuclear physicists, a broad representation of people from Research Institutes and Universities, a balanced par ticipat!on with respect to age, sex, nationality and observance of ASI requirements.

Book excerpt: The present volume gathers a series of selected and updated contributions presented at the International Symposium on Applied Theoretical Chemistry held in Havana, Cuba, July 2-6, 1990. This Symposium was intended to illustrate current applications of Theoretical Chemistry in different fields of Physical Chemistry. Theoretical Chemistry has become a powerful tool of investigation in all areas of Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Physical Chemistry. The plenary lectures given in the Symposium were classified into four topics: Atom-Surface Interactions, Chemical Reaction Mechanisms, Molecular Structure and Properties, and Molecular Spectroscopy. We retain the same division in this volume. Over 60 scientists from Cuba, Finland, France, Germany, Great-Britain, Hungary, Italy, Spain, Sweden, USA, USSR, and Venezuela participated in the Conference. Twenty plenary lectures were given by distinguished members of the international scientific community. Furthermore, a large number of posters were presented by younger experts in various fields of Theoretical Chemistry. This International Symposium was organized by the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Havana and the Cuban Chemical Society. It was an opportunity to bring together in Havana several outstanding scientists from various countries of the world. Havana is worldwide renown for its wonderful climate, the hospitality of its inhabitants, and the proximity of beautiful touring resorts.
Book Synopsis Coherence Phenomena in Atoms and Molecules in Laser Fields by : Andre D Bandrauk
Download or read book Coherence Phenomena in Atoms and Molecules in Laser Fields written by Andre D Bandrauk and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the lectures and communications presented at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop (NATO ARW 900857) which was held May 5-10, 1991 at McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. A scientific commitee made up of P.P. Lambropoulos (USC & Crete), P.8. Corkum (NRC, Ottawa), and H. B. vL. van den Heuvell (FOM, Amsterdam) guided the organizers, A.D. Bandrauk (Sherbrooke) and S.C. Wallace (Toronto) in preparing a programme which would cover the latest advances in the field of atom and molecule laser interactions. Since the last meeting held in July 1987 on "Atomic and Molecular Processes with Short Intense Laser Pulses", NATO ASI vol 1718 (Plenum Press 1988), considerable progress has been made in understanding high intensity effects on atoms and the concomitant coherence effects. After four years, the emphasis is now shifting more to molecules. The present volume represents therefore this trend with four sections covering the main interests of research endeavours in this area: i) Atoms in Intense Laser-Fields ii) Molecules in Intense Laser Fields iii) Atomic Coherences iv) Molecular Coherences The experience developed over the years in multiphoton atomic processes has been very useful and is the main source of our understanding of similar processes in molecules. Thus ATI (above threshold ionization) has been found to occur in molecules as well as a new phenomenon, ATD (above-threshold dissociation). Laser-induced avoided crossings of molecular electronic surfaces is also now entering the current language of high intensity molecular processes.
