Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Step into a series of dazzling, funny, melancholy, and joyous moments with this collection of haiku masterworks. Translators Peter Beilenson and Harry Behn approached this volume with the twofold goals of crafting a book of haiku accessible to anyone and rendering their best guess at what the poets would have written in English. Their translations preserve the sublime spirit of each verse, conjuring vivid visual and emotional impressions in spare words. Haiku icon Basho is represented amply here, as are imagery-virtuoso Buson and wry, warm, painfully human Issa. The verses of Shiki, Joso, Kyorai, Kikaku, Chora, Gyodai, Kakei, Izen, and others also appear, illuminated by lovely woodblock prints. From the playful (Oh, that summer moon!/It made me go wandering/Round the pond all night –Basho) to the bittersweet (Everything I touch/With tenderness, alas/Pricks like a bramble –Issa) to the fondly amused (It is not easy/to be sure which end is which/of a resting slug –Kyorai), this collection will stir your senses and your heart.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a collection of Japanese haiku written by an American poet Helen Chenoweth. The author has used a language that is all American in association, but very much enriched by her love for things Japanese. "Poetry in Japan is as universal as air. It is read by everybody, composed by almost everybody, irrespective of class and condition." This statement by Lafcadio Hearn deeply impressed Helen Chenoweth. In course of her comprehensive studies in the art of writing and teaching poetry, she became enchanted by the Japanese haiku, in which the subtlest meanings and feelings can be expressed in three short lines. Pageant of Seasons offers many lyrical haiku, some of which are centered around the Pacific Ocean. Other haiku show nature in all its facets of growing. These poems create a kaleidoscope of charming images and experiences to which each of us will attach his own meanings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2005 CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title Basho's Haiku offers the most comprehensive translation yet of the poetry of Japanese writer Matsuo Bashō (1644–1694), who is credited with perfecting and popularizing the haiku form of poetry. One of the most widely read Japanese writers, both within his own country and worldwide, Bashō is especially beloved by those who appreciate nature and those who practice Zen Buddhism. Born into the samurai class, Bashō rejected that world after the death of his master and became a wandering poet and teacher. During his travels across Japan, he became a lay Zen monk and studied history and classical poetry. His poems contained a mystical quality and expressed universal themes through simple images from the natural world. David Landis Barnhill's brilliant book strives for literal translations of Bashō's work, arranged chronologically in order to show Bashō's development as a writer. Avoiding wordy and explanatory translations, Barnhill captures the brevity and vitality of the original Japanese, letting the images suggest the depth of meaning involved. Barnhill also presents an overview of haiku poetry and analyzes the significance of nature in this literary form, while suggesting the importance of Bashō to contemporary American literature and environmental thought.

Book excerpt: HAIKU HARVEST: 2000--2006 is a compilation of the eleven issues of Haiku Harvest: Journal of Haiku in English, plus two issues of Haiku Noir and one issue of Ku Nouveau. This immense collection of poetry is from poets in thirty countries around the world. It includes the full range of haiku in English (and several related forms, like tanka) from classic to avant-garde styles. Haiku Harvest was dedicated to publishing and promoting haiku, both in the western tradition of classical haiku and in all related forms, including tanka. It gave generous space to poets so they can demonstrate the range of their haiku and it promoted innovation by providing a showcase for poetry in new forms that are serious attempts to assimilate the haiku and tanka traditions in forms within the English poetic tradition. Edited by Denis M. Garrison.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While teaching in Japan, Judith Pascoe was fascinated to discover the popularity that Emily Brontë’s novel Wuthering Heights has enjoyed there. Nearly one hundred years after its first formal introduction to the country, the novel continues to engage the imaginations of Japanese novelists, filmmakers, manga artists, and others, resulting in numerous translations, adaptations, and dramatizations. On the Bullet Train with Emily Brontë is Pascoe’s lively account of her quest to discover the reasons for the continuous Japanese embrace of Wuthering Heights. At the same time, the book chronicles Pascoe’s experience as an adult student of Japanese. She contemplates the multiple Japanese translations of Brontë, as contrasted to the single (or nonexistent) English translations of major Japanese writers. Carrying out a close reading of a distant country’s Wuthering Heights, Pascoe begins to see American literary culture as a small island on which readers are isolated from foreign literature.

Book excerpt: One of the vital aspects of traditional Rinzai Zen koan study in Japan is jakugo, or capping-phrase exercises. When Zen students have attained sufficient mastery of meditation or concentration, they are given a koan (such as the familiar “What is the sound of one hand clapping?”) to study. When the student provides a satisfactory response to the koan, he advances to the jakugo exercise–he must select a “capping phrase,” usually a passage from a poem among the thousands in a special anthology, the only book allowed in the monastery. One such anthology, written entirely in Chinese, was translated by noted Zen priest and scholar Soiku Shigematsu as A Zen Forest: Sayings of the Masters. Equally important is a Japanese collection, the Zenrin Segoshu, which Mr. Shigematsu now translates from the Japanese, including nearly eight hundred poems in sparkling English versions that retain the Zen implications of the verse.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to lead with vision? From LinkedIn Learning Expert, Bonnie Hagemann comes the first book devoted entirely to vision as a key leadership principle. Hagemann and her co-authors delve deeply into the notion that a compelling vision that motivates and inspires is a differentiator for organizations that want to hire and retain talent, be more competitive, and thrive in uncertain times. But a compelling vision on its own is not enough, which is why the authors, sought-after leadership development experts globally, provide readers with detailed analysis of the essential things leaders must do to effectively engage the workforce around that vision: embody courage, forge clarity, build connectedness, and shape culture. Leading with Vision draws on quantitative data from the authors' research of over 400 companies supplemented with real-world examples from thoughtful leaders who exemplify the core principles of leading with vision in established companies, including: Olukai, Bumble Bee, Coresystems, Jimbo's, Bunge, and more. The book also includes an actionable blueprint developed by the authors that leaders and their organizations can implement on day one of their journey.
