Book excerpt: Teachers, use this workbook for warm-ups, full class assignments, homework, and substitute/guest teacher days in English classes, math classes, art classes, or any classes in which you might use writing and numbers and art to support cross-curricular learning and instruction. Discover the creativity this haiku starter journal will unleash in your students! In this semester-length workbook, students will explore their emotional responses as they complete unique poems with first line prompts provided on each page and space to include a sketch and reflect on their inspiration. The first line of 5 syllables is provided to inspire a thought or memory. Students will complete the haiku on the next two lines with 7 syllables on the middle line and 5 syllables on the last line. There's no need to consider rhyme at all. Some of the starters are quite silly, but some may take students to poignant places. No need to worry about punctuation or making each line a complete sentence; the whole poem might be a single seventeen-syllable sentence. If a student's last line surprises them, they've captured a more complex essence of haiku! But you don't have to be a student or teacher to enjoy this workbook! If you like crossword puzzle books or Sudoku books, add this haiku starter book to your list. Keep one handy in your vehicle, backpack, purse, bathroom . . . so it's available anytime you might want to get your mind off of, well, anything! Once you get the swing of creating haiku poems, you'll want to check out "Haikus Can Amuse! 366 Haiku Starters" for an entire Leap Year's worth of haiku starter prompts! Book Synopsis Northern Haida Songs by : John Enrico
Download or read book Northern Haida Songs written by John Enrico and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the musical culture of the Northern Haida Indians, who speak two closely related dialects. One dialect group lives on Graham Island, British Columbia, the other on Prince of Wales Island, Alaska. The recordings on which the book is based were compiled over a period of more than a decade from a wide variety of historical and contemporary sources. Representing the entire range of the Haida musical tradition-a tradition that nearly died out and is currently being revived-this volume documents its changes over more than a century. Part 1 is a lengthy ethnographic description of musical genres that situates Haida music in the context of the Northwest Coast. Part 2 presents 128 songs, fully transcribed and analyzed and representing some twenty types, ranging from traditional genres such as peace-making and mourning songs to songs of personal expression composed during the modern period. Part 3 is a detailed musical and linguistic analysis of the songs presented in the second part. The integration of descriptions of these two facets of song-music and language-is the particular goal of the book. The volume is a substantive contribution to the ethnomusicology of native North America and will be of special interest to scholars concerned with vocables in Native American music. John Enrico has been engaged in linguistic research on the Haida language since 1975. His publications include The Lexical Phonology of Masset Haida and articles on aspects of Haida grammar. Wendy Bross Stuart's first ethnomusicological publication was Gambling Music of the Coast Salish Indians. In 1980 she began collaborating with John Enrico in the transcription and analysis of Haida songs.

Book Synopsis Khartoum at Night by : Marie Grace Brown
Download or read book Khartoum at Night written by Marie Grace Brown and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2017-08-22 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first half of the twentieth century, a pioneering generation of young women exited their homes and entered public space, marking a new era for women's civic participation in northern Sudan. A provocative new public presence, women's civic engagement was at its core a bodily experience. Amid the socio-political upheavals of imperial rule, female students, medical workers, and activists used a careful choreography of body movements and fashion to adapt to imperial mores, claim opportunities for political agency, and shape a new standard of modern, mobile womanhood. Khartoum at Night is the first English-language history of these women's lives, examining how their experiences of the British Empire from 1900–1956 were expressed on and through their bodies. Central to this story is the tobe: a popular, modest form of dress that wrapped around a woman's head and body. Marie Grace Brown shows how northern Sudanese women manipulated the tucks, folds, and social messages of the tobe to deftly negotiate the competing pulls of modernization and cultural authenticity that defined much of the imperial experience. Her analysis weaves together the threads of women's education and activism, medical midwifery, urban life, consumption, and new behaviors of dress and beauty to reconstruct the worlds of politics and pleasure in which early-twentieth-century Sudanese women lived.
