Book excerpt: Theoretical calculations predict the modification of properties of vector mesons, such as a shift in their masses and/or broadening of their widths in dense nuclear matter. These effects can be related to partial restoration of chiral symmetry at high density or temperature. Photproduction of vector mesons off nuclei were performed at Jefferson Lab using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS). The data were taken with a beam of tagged photons with energies up to 4 GeV on various nuclear targets. The properties of the rho vector mesons were investigated via their rare leptonic decay to e+e-. This decay channel is preferred over hadronic modes in order to eliminate final state interactions in the nuclear matter. The combinatorial background in the mass spectrum was removed by a self-normalizing mixed-event technique. The rho meson mass distributions were extracted for each of the targets. Statistically significant results regarding medium modification of the rho meson in the nuc.

Book excerpt: The theory of the strong interaction, Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), has been remarkably successful in describing high-energy and short-distance-scale experiments involving quarks and gluons. However, applying QCD to low energy and large-distance-scale experiments has been a major challenge. At low energies, standard nuclear physics with nucleon and meson degrees of freedom work effectively in describing observations. The transition between the two descriptions of hadrons is one of the main goals of hadronic physics. Lattice QCD calculations have made tremendous progress and will one day give us a full description of strong interactions under all regimes. Meanwhile, effective theories incorporating some of the main features of QCD have been successfully developed and help us gain insight into the non-perturbative regime of QCD. All these models predict modifications of the properties of hadrons embedded in nuclear matter. Mesons with exotic quantum numbers are predicted at excitation energies below 2 GeV. Several experiments have been conducted with the Cebaf Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at the Thomas Jefferson National Laboratory (JLab) to test these predictions.

Research progress is reported on a number of topics in this general area, including studies of the role of chiral symmetry for finite density or temperature nuclear matter, the use of QCD sum rules to describe baryons in nuclear matter, and color transparency. In the general field of Hadron Physics broad progress included studies of perturbative QCD, heavy quark physics, QCD sum rules, and QCD-based models. Notable progress was also achieved in Relativistic Dynamics in Quark, Hadron, and Nuclear Physics, where an explicit model of composite particles shows how the z-graph physics (which is an essential part of Dirac phenomenology) comes about. In addition, calculations of elastic electron-deuteron scattering based on two-body relativistic dynamics and meson exchange currents were completed, as were studies of quark-anti-quark bound states based on a relativistic quark model. Progress is also reported on the relativistic few-body problem. In the area of Heavy Ion Dynamics and Sharp Lepton Pairs, work continues on the Composite Particle Scenario for the 'Sharp Lepton Problem'. In particular, the scenario can now encompass the anomalous sharp leptons reported from positron irradiation of heavy neutral atoms, establishing such irradiations as an alternative experimental window to the heavy ion experiments.
