Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hadasseh: Or -From Captivity to the Persian Throne- If I am blameable in the eyes of some of the numberless sects paramount in our day in that I have gone to Scripture whereon to found a crude romance, let me be blamed, therefore. Are we perfect? Were they, 400 years D.C., perfect P Every age, every heart, can but echo, No! Therefore I refer my readers to history, and to the sacred law also and see therein man unchanged then as now. Students can read it; theologists see it by the eye of profundity and the meanest scholar in our midst to-day realises what it was and is to work, to fight, to love, and hate, and at last to die, - all only a repeti tion of the old past, be it all either to our gain or to our loss. Therefore I attribute humbly the authority of Hadasseh over the mind of Artaxerxes, and after wards over the whole kingdom, as one of the most marvellous and heroic incidents of romance in the human life upon record in women. Book excerpt: Winner of The 2018 Saidi-Sirjani Book Award In The Western Christian Presence in the Russias and Qājār Persia, c.1760–c.1870, Thomas O'Flynn vividly paints the life and times of missionary enterprises in early nineteenth-century Russia and Persia at a moment of immense change when Tsarist Russia embarked on an expansionist campaign reaching to the Caucasus. Simultaneously he charts the relationship between the new Persian dynasty of the Qājārs and missionary activity on the part of European and American missionaries. This book reconstructs that world from a predominantly religious perspective. It recounts the sustaining ideals as well as the everyday struggles of the western missionaries, Protestant (Scottish, Basel and American Congregationalist) and Catholic (Jesuit and Vincentian). It looks at the reactions of diverse tribal peoples, the Tatars of the North Caucasus, the Kabardians and Circassians. Persia was the ultimate goal of these missionaries, which they eventually reached in the 1820s. Altogether this study throws light on the troubled course of history in West Asia and provides the background to politico-religious conflicts in Chechnya and Persia that persist to the present day.

Book excerpt: Widely praised as a seminal contribution to the study of the Old Testament when it first appeared, Michael V. Fox's Character and Ideology in the Book of Esther is now available in a second edition, complete with an up-to-date critical review of recent Esther scholarship. Fox's commentary, based on his own translation of the Hebrew text, captures the meaning and artistry of Esther's inspiring story. After laying out the background information essential for properly reading Esther, Fox offers commentary on the text that clearly unpacks its message and relevance. Fox also looks in depth at each character in the story of Esther, showing how they were carefully shaped by the book's author to teach readers a new view of how to live as Jews in foreign lands.
