Conocer la localización de un accidente geográfico o de un municipio implicaba casi siempre las mismas consideraciones: Saber dónde está, una breve descripción y, acto seguido, proceder a ubicarlo en el mapa. El inventario se completaba con visiones alegóricas en las que se ponderaban los recursos naturales y las condiciones climáticas, por ejemplo, del territorio colombiano, las cuales reñían a la vuelta de la esquina con inadmisibles niveles de pobreza y episódicos desastres por eventos naturales. En este marco de referencia acerca de la imagen cotidiana de la geografía y de algunos de los debates al interior de ella, ¿por qué, entonces, Pensar, Sentir y Vivir los espacios? Esta tríada nace del contacto con la teoría geográfica y de edificantes vivencias con profesores de ciencias sociales y estudiantes de los distintos niveles educativos. De la pregunta ¿en qué educa la geografía?, nacieron múltiples opiniones que al cabo de los años, como una manera o estrategia conceptual y práctica de ir encontrándole caminos posibles al interrogante, se fueron agrupando en Pensar, Sentir y Vivir los espacios, las posibles respuestas. En síntesis, el interés es convertir la propuesta geográfica de pensar, sentir y vivir los espacios, en una opción educativa de formación ciudadana, mediante el reconocimiento del lugar como la unidad territorial básica para la educación política de los ciudadanos.
