Book excerpt: Excerpt from Habits and Characters of Various Wild Animals It is, of course, impossible to write from personal observation and study all the data that are neces sary for the completion of a book of this kind. One may be tolerably familiar with the life-habits and customs of a certain beast, may indeed regard it as an intimate friend; but life is too short for one to learn from practical observation all the details concerning it that are necessary its changes of coat, length of life, and so on. If one could devote all one's studies to one particular species, it might be possible; but in dealing with several there comes a point when inaccuracy must be risked or extensive references made. Realising this, my method has been first to write all I know concerning the animal dealt with, and, this done, to apply to outside authority for such supple mentary evidence as might prove necessary. If my original notes have appeared sufficient, they have been left untouched; and in every case my own data, when sufficiently wide, have been given, whether or not they happen to coincide with the notes of other, and probably far better qualified, naturalists. On other occasions, personal data on a certain point have either been entirely lacking or insufficiently substantial, in which case the best authorities have been sought and quoted. A final reading of the finished chapters has brought home very forcibly the realisation that at least half the information contained in this volume is the result of the studies of my boyhood. It dates back from my ninth year, and a very large number of the incidents quoted occurred during the succeeding seven years. In those days the study of wild birds and animals, particularly animals, combined with an intense love for angling, led me to explore many lonely mountain lochs and forests, and was so absorbing an attraction that it is to be feared it excluded studies of a more important kind. I had no books on British animals so far as the school library was concerned, no one seemed to have written any, and during holidays a reference library was not within hailing distance. The natural history books annually presented by kindly relatives were given over to such curiosities of the African veldt and the Indian jungle as best lent themselves to illus tration, and contained nothing concerning the creatures I knew and loved. Gamekeepers, stone breakers, and water-bailiffs were the only references available; and I very soon learnt that the sole way to acquire accurate knowledge was to find out for one's self - a state of affairs for which I to-day thank my lucky star! Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wild Animals and the Camera As sport, it is one of the most fasci nating, and I have learned more of the habits and characteristics of wild animals with my camera than gun-shooting could ever have taught me. For years I was a constant, I might almost say daily, visitor to the Zoological Society's Gardens. Every addition to the wonderful collection I studied for days, and sometimes weeks, before capturing it successfully with my camera. Many readers will remember my Illustrated Zoo Notes, published in Animal Life, and my contributions to Living Animals of the World and the chief illustrated weeklies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wild Animals in Captivity Being an Account of the Habits, Food, Management and Treatment, of the Beasts and Birds at the Zoo: With Reminiscences and Anecdotes I may say that the materials for this work, when placed in my hands, were in such a state of chaos that I began to despair of ever being able to get them into any form for publication, but by careful study of the fragmentary papers and rough notes, I have, I hope, succeeded in my humble efforts to bring together an amount of readable matter which may prove interesting, useful, and instructive to the reader. Much of the matter herein published appeared in land and Water, The Field, Proceedings of the Zoological Society, Punch, and other publications, either anonymously, or under his nom-de - plume D. A. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Habits and Instincts of Animals Experience, and without a knowledge of the end in view, they are impelled to the performance of certain actions, tending to the well-being of the individual, and the preservation of the species. So far, then, and considered as merely a general definition, or rather description, of instinct, this opinion is perfectly satis factory; but it does not reach all the various bearings of this complicated subject. When we find some animals not only impelled to perform certain necessary func tions in a regular and unvarying manner, one gene ration following another in exactly the same track, and supplying their different wants in precisely the same manner, -but also that many others actually vary in what should seem to be the universal ordination of nature, and, as if in obedience to the deductions of reason, accurately adapting their plans to their circum stances, and their measures to those unexpected changes which accident may have wrought in their situation, with these facts upon record, we feel it is not sur prising that some who have written on the subject have gone a step further. They have, in fact, sought to solve the question, by admitting that, besides the faculty of instinct, animals may, in an inferior degree, also possess that of reason. But this admission brings with it fresh difficulties. If once We allow the least degree of reason to the brute creation, we must concede a portion of it altogether incompatible with their situation. Ive must admit that the bee, for instance, is guided in her wonderful Operations, by an acquaintance with those principles of science, which man has required time and reflection to discover. We must, in short, acknow ledge her both a geometrician and a philosopher and endue her with a perception of causes and effects, in consistent with the other habits and appearances of the creature, absolutely derogatory to the superior nature of man. (2) A much more probable solution of this question, and one far more conformable to the relative positions of man and brute, is afforded by the idea, that animals. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Burgess Animal Book for Children The cordial reception given the Burgess Bird Book for Children, together with numerous letters to the author asking for information on the habits and characteristics of many of the mammals of America, led to the preparation of this volume. It is offered merely as an introduction to the four-footed friends, little and big, which form so important a part of the wild life of the United States and Canada. There has been no attempt to describe or classify sub-species. That is for the scientist and student with specific interests. The purpose of this book is to acquaint the reader with the larger groups - orders, families, and divisions of the latter, so that typical representatives may readily be recognized and their habits understood. Instead of the word mammal the word animal has been used throughout as having a better defined meaning to the average child. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of Animal Life and Habits The present series of Sketches has been compiled with the view of affording general readers, and especially the young, some popular and yet trustworthy ideas regarding some of the most interesting groups of the animal world. The work may in fact be regarded as a natural history text-book adapted for use in Nature's school at large, and as a guide to the use of the observant powers, through the due exer cise of which all true ideas of Nature are acquired. Some of the Sketches have already appeared in Chambers's Journal, and are reprinted here with some additions, and with such alterations as were found to be necessary in adapting them for volume-form. The papers lay no claim to originality; but the day of grave errors in popular scien tific works is not yet past, and the author would fain hope that the Sketches may at least be found to possess the merit of correctness. The highest purpose this little work may serve is, that of fostering a love for the personal and direct observation of Nature. Knowledge so acquired invariably brings its own reward in the power it confers of discerning higher aspects in all the workes of Nature.' And as a result of such studies, we may say with Wordsworth of the most commonplace object around. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scenes With the Hunter and the Trapper in Many Lands: Or Stories of Adventures With Wild Animals It seems to me, therefore, that a book recording some of the most stirring achievements of men in their prolonged contest with wild animals may be not only interesting but useful - that it will not only amuse but teach. It is some thing gained when a boy learns to prize and imitate the manly virtues; and such stories as are set forth in the fol lowing pages will help the young reader to this valuable lesson. They are all true stories, and I have carefully re frained from embroidering them with sensational details. Collected from a variety of sources, they are necessarily diversified in tone and character; but not one of them is unwholesome reading. For the sake of securing a certain degree of homogeneity, I have strung them together on a simple thread of narration, suggested by a boyish experience of my own. Further, they are associated with the chief facts in the natural history of the animals to which they relate; so that, to some extent, my little book may be ex pected to quicken its reader's interest in zoological studies. But, of course, it is intended to solicit the patronage of the juvenile public primarily and chiefly as a record of Adventures with Wild Animals.
