Book Synopsis Questioning the Entrepreneurial State by : Karl Wennberg
Download or read book Questioning the Entrepreneurial State written by Karl Wennberg and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-04-23 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2008 financial crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic have made the authorities to increasingly turn inward and use ethnocentrism, protectionism, and top-down approaches to guide policy on trade, competition, and industrial development. The continuing aftereffects of such policies range from the rise and seeming success of authoritarian states, rise of populist and protectionist trends, and evolving academic agendas inspiring the reemergence of top-down industrial policies across the world. This open access edited volume contains contributions from over 30 scholars with expertise in economics, innovation, management, and economic history. The chapters offer unique theoretical and empirical contributions discussing topics such as how industrial policies affect risk, incentives, and information for investments. They also address the policy perspectives on new technologies such as AI and its implications for market entry, the role for independent entrepreneurship in increasingly regulated markets, and whether governments should focus on market interventions or institutional capacity-building. Questioning the Entrepreneurial State initiates a much sought-after debate on the notion of an Entrepreneurial State. It discusses the dangers of top-down approaches to industrial policy, examines lessons from such approaches for future policy design, and calls attention to the progress of open and contestable markets in a sound economy and society. “Creative destruction, innovation and entrepreneurship are at the core of economic growth. The government has a clear role, to provide the basic fabric of a dynamic society, but industrial policy and state-owned companies are the boulevard of broken dreams and unrealized visions. This important message is convincingly stated in Questioning the Entrepreneurial State.” Anders Borg, former Minister of Finance, Sweden “Misreading the dynamism of American entrepreneurship, European intellectuals and policy makers have embraced a dangerous fantasy: catching up requires constructing an entrepreneurial state. This book provides a vital antidote: The entrepreneur comes first: The state may support. It cannot lead.” Amar Bhidé, Thomas Schmidheiny Professor of International Business, Tufts University “This important new book subjects the emergence of the entrepreneurial state, which reflects a shift in the locus of entrepreneurship from the individual to the public sector, to the scrutiny of rigorous analysis. The resulting concerns, flaws and biases inherent in the entrepreneurial state exposed are both alarming and sobering. The skill and scholarly craftsmanship brought to bear in this crucial analysis is evident throughout the book, along with the even, but ultimately consequential thinking of the authors. A must read for researchers and thought leaders in business and policy." David Audtretsch, Distinguished Professor, Ameritech Chair of Economic Development, Indiana University
Book Synopsis Intracellular Staining in Neurobiology by : Stanley B. Kater
Download or read book Intracellular Staining in Neurobiology written by Stanley B. Kater and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to provide basic reference material to facilitate the further development and application of the intracellular staining techniques which originated with the introduction of Procion dye as a neurocellular stain. We had sev eral specific objectives in compiling these chapters. First, we recognized that both the techniques and results of intracellular staining have been derived from a variety of preparations and published in diverse journals. Consequently, we tried to make this information more readily available by incorporating several reviews by original authors. This should provide the reader with a knowledge of the kinds of neurobiological prob lems for which intracellular staining has already been employed. A second objective was to facilitate extension of these methods to a wider variety of problems. To this end there are chapters dealing with Procion dye as a marker for ultrastructural investi gations, the use of cobalt as a staining compound and the implementation of computer techniques for quantitative studies of neuronal relationships. As background for further extension of these methods this volume contains material on the history of the discovery of Procion dyes as intracellular stains, the chemistry of these dyes, and fundamentals of fluorescence microscopy. Our final specific objective was to present details of technical procedures that were not readily available in the literature.

Book Synopsis Green Automation by : Francisco José Gomes da Silva
Download or read book Green Automation written by Francisco José Gomes da Silva and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-06-21 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental issues are a growing concern for our society, and should deserve increased attention, given the extremely negative climate changes which have been taking place. Emissions of greenhouse gases, excessive dependence on fossil fuels, growing consumption of power energy, and exacerbated consumption of materials are some of the problems that need to be addressed urgently. Some of these problems can be overcome through ingenious solutions based on automation. This book aims to make a contribution precisely in this sense, criticizing the current state of society in general and providing some solutions that can be used as a basis for the development of more environmentally friendly systems.

Book Synopsis Enumerative Algebraic Geometry by : Steven L. Kleiman
Download or read book Enumerative Algebraic Geometry written by Steven L. Kleiman and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1991 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1989 marked the 150th anniversary of the birth of the great Danish mathematician Hieronymus George Zeuthen. Zeuthen's name is known to every algebraic geometer because of his discovery of a basic invariant of surfaces. However, he also did fundamental research in intersection theory, enumerative geometry, and the projective geometry of curves and surfaces. Zeuthen's extraordinary devotion to his subject, his characteristic depth, thoroughness, and clarity of thought, and his precise and succinct writing style are truly inspiring. During the past ten years or so, algebraic geometers have reexamined Zeuthen's work, drawing from it inspiration and new directions for development in the field. The 1989 Zeuthen Symposium, held in the summer of 1989 at the Mathematical Institute of the University of Copenhagen, provided a historic opportunity for mathematicians to gather and examine those areas in contemporary mathematical research which have evolved from Zeuthen's fruitful ideas. This volume, containing papers presented during the symposium, as well as others inspired by it, illuminates some currently active areas of research in enumerative algebraic geometry.

Book Synopsis Sustainable Logistics Systems Using AI-based Meta-Heuristics Approaches by : Jiuping Xu
Download or read book Sustainable Logistics Systems Using AI-based Meta-Heuristics Approaches written by Jiuping Xu and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-22 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces and analyses recent trends and studies of sustainable logistics systems using AI-based meta-heuristics approaches, including AI-based meta-heuristics applied to supply chain network models, integrated multi-criteria decision-making approaches for green supply chain management, uncertain supply chain models etc. It emphasizes both theory and practice, providing methodological and theoretical basis as well as case references for sustainable logistics systems using AI based meta-heuristics. Most of multi-national enterprises today face the challenge of sustainable development for their logistics systems trying to meet or exceed customer expectations. Sustainable development attracts both researchers and industrial practitioners who are focused on the design and implementation of logistics system. AI-based meta-heuristics approaches has emerged as a capable method for quickly providing optimal or near-optimal solutions for the problems that exact optimization cannot solve. Recent advances in various AI-based meta-heuristics approaches can resolve various and complex logistics and supply chain problem types. This book mainly encompasses the most popular and frequently employed AI-based meta-heuristics approaches such as genetic algorithm, variable neighborhood search, multi-objective heuristic search and the hybrid of these approaches. The chapters in this book were originally published in the International Journal of Management Science and Engineering Management.
