Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Action, romance, fantastic creatures and a bit of satire distinguish this groundbreaking novel of adventure fantasy. By incredible accident Gulliver Jones finds himself on Mars, interacting with strange beings and stranger societies and embarked on a quest to save a beautiful princess from a cruel tyrant. First published in England in 1905 under the title Lt. Gullivar Jones: His Vacation, the book was re-titled Gulliver of Mars when first published in the USA in 1964. The novel can be seen as an example of both early science fiction and the genre of Planetary Romance made popular by Edgar Rice Burroughs and later carried on by C.S. Lewis, Michael Moorcock, Jack Vance, Anne McCaffrey and others. The author shows the influence of H.G. Wells and supplies a bit of satire in the vein of Jonathan Swift, as might be suspected from the title. Gulliver Jones is a unique character, brave but slightly out of his depth in a new world, and his adventures among the crumbling cities, dense jungles and strange beasts of Mars are distinctively his own. Although no sequels to Gulliver of Mars were written, the character has lived on in several comic books. With an eye-catching new cover, and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Gulliver of Mars is both modern and readable.

Transported to Mars in a most unexpected fashion, Lieutenant Gulliver Jones, U.S.N., promptly found himself head-over-heels in adventure and romance. Mars was a planet of ruined cities, ancient peoples, copper-skinned swordsmen, and weird and awesome monsters. There was a princess to be rescued, a River of Death to be navigated, and a strange prophecy to be fulfilled.

Soon after his arrival, Gullivar finds himself face to face with all manner of danger. He sees the most terrifying of monsters and finds himself involved in epic battles. Gullivar also finds his heart being drawn to a Martian princess... None of Gullivar's experiences have prepared him for his adventures on the Red Planet. BEFORE JOHN CARTER... There are obvious and clear similarities between Gulliver of Mars and Edgar Rice Burroughs' more famous John Carter books set on Mars - the military man transported to Mars by mystic means, who falls in love with a Martian princess and becomes involved in adventures, though the novel was met with such an insipid reception that it cause Edwin Arnold to stop writing fiction. It is now considered his most famous work. The novel was originaly published as Lieut. Gullivar Jones: His Vacation, but has later been reissued as Gullivar of Mars and Gulliver of Mars.
