Book excerpt: "The governors and premiers of the five states and provinces that border the Gulf of Maine--Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia--established the Gulf of Maine Council on the Marine Environment in 1989 as a regional entity with a mission to 'maintain and enhance environmental quality in the Gulf of Maine and to allow for sustainable resource use by existing and future generations.' The Gulf of Maine Council on the Marine Environment Action Plan 2007-2012 describes the goals, outcomes, and activities that the Council will pursue through its committees and partnerships in the next five years. The Action Plan focuses on key issues that Council members--representing federal, state, and provincial governments; non-government organizations; and business interests--identified as priorities for which they have pledged support and that require or benefit significantly from regional collaboration."--Document.

Book excerpt: To provide an overview of the offshore ecosystems of the Gulf of Maine, this document highlights some of the fundamental natural and human-induced (anthropogenic) driving forces, pressures, state, impacts, and responses (DPSIR) for the offshore habitats of the Gulf of Maine. The DPSIR framework allows us to better understand the biological interactions and the physical-biological interactions between the habitats and the organisms that together form the ecosystems of the Gulf.

Book excerpt: The Gulf of Maine is a highly productive water body with a reputation for clean water, unspoiled beaches, and high quality seafood. However, certain nearshore regions of the Gulf have been found to be polluted and all densely populated and industrialized areas of the Gulf are affected by local pollution sources. This fact sheet reviews the state of the Gulf of Maine environment, focusing on the threat to marine life from pollution. It examines the contaminants of concern, including heavy metals, pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls, and hydrocarbons, and their implications for the health of marine organisms and humans. The fact sheet also notes recent trends in contaminant levels and actions being taken to restore and maintain the health of the Gulf ecosystem.

The Gulf of Mexico is an open and dynamic marine ecosystem rich in natural resources but heavily impacted by human activities, including agricultural, industrial, commercial and coastal development. The Gulf of Mexico has been continuously exposed to petroleum hydrocarbons for millions of years from natural oil and gas seeps on the sea floor, and more recently from oil drilling and production activities located in the water near and far from shore. Major accidental oil spills in the Gulf are infrequent; two of the most significant include the Ixtoc I blowout in the Bay of Campeche in 1979 and the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill in 2010. Unfortunately, baseline assessments of the status of habitats and biota in the Gulf of Mexico before these spills either were not available, or the data had not been systematically compiled in a way that would help scientists assess the potential short-term and long-term effects of such events. This 2-volume series compiles and summarizes thousands of data sets showing the status of habitats and biota in the Gulf of Mexico before the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill. Volume 1 covers: water and sediment quality and contaminants in the Gulf; natural oil and gas seeps in the Gulf of Mexico; coastal habitats, including flora and fauna and coastal geology; offshore benthos and plankton, with an analysis of current knowledge on energy capture and energy flows in the Gulf; and shellfish and finfish resources that provide the basis for commercial and recreational fisheries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ocean has absorbed a significant portion of all human-made carbon dioxide emissions. This benefits human society by moderating the rate of climate change, but also causes unprecedented changes to ocean chemistry. Carbon dioxide taken up by the ocean decreases the pH of the water and leads to a suite of chemical changes collectively known as ocean acidification. The long term consequences of ocean acidification are not known, but are expected to result in changes to many ecosystems and the services they provide to society. Ocean Acidification: A National Strategy to Meet the Challenges of a Changing Ocean reviews the current state of knowledge, explores gaps in understanding, and identifies several key findings. Like climate change, ocean acidification is a growing global problem that will intensify with continued CO2 emissions and has the potential to change marine ecosystems and affect benefits to society. The federal government has taken positive initial steps by developing a national ocean acidification program, but more information is needed to fully understand and address the threat that ocean acidification may pose to marine ecosystems and the services they provide. In addition, a global observation network of chemical and biological sensors is needed to monitor changes in ocean conditions attributable to acidification.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Images of the earth's surface have been around for years, but it is only recently that scientists have begun to take advantage of new data generated by the explosion of remote sensing equipment to address a variety of technical questions in many different fields. This Atlas presents breathtaking full-color images of the region to reveal and interpret environmental patterns and problems. The illustrations are interwoven with commentary on the area's ecology, geology, and oceanography, giving readers an understanding of the link between their own backyard and the interdependent set of systems that make up one of the most distinctive regions on earth. The Gulf of Maine is an almost-enclosed sea bounded by an international watershed; shaped by volcanoes, glaciation, and other geologic forces; rich in marine resources; diverse in terrestrial systems; occupied by indigenous peoples for nearly 10,000 years; and now used intensively by fishermen, foresters, and tourists. A different aspect of this multi-faceted region is discussed in each chapter. Yet it is the stunning satellite images and aerial photographs that set the Atlas apart. With pinpoint clarity, the images demonstrate how these increasingly powerful sensing tools may be utilized to view and interpret elements of the natural environment and ultimately, to help rectify problems. In the carefully coordinated narrative essays, authors from across the region address issues raised by the images, for example: how much clear cutting is going on and what its effects are on other parts of the ecosystem; how well marine fisheries are managing to prevent overfishing; the effect of pollutant loadings in nearshore estuaries; and how seaweeds contribute to the lobster harvest.
