Book excerpt: The year is 2084. America is laboring under a vast reconstruction plan designed to rebuild the cities and bring the country out of a long depression. All hard copy records are declared illegal and computers are the only source of information, a source that can be manipulated to distort the facts and hide the truth to promote treason. Hank Rittemeyer is a New York City Police Detective who has learned to live with the stifling rules and regulations brought about by restrictive laws imposed throughout the country. During a routine burglary investigation he discovers an error in the police computer when the suspect, Colin O'Riley, is erased from the computers. He sets out to find him and enlists O'Riley's lawyer and the burglar's sister. They learn that the rule of law has been corrupted into a conspiracy to deny justice in an attempt to turn America's citizens into sheep who blindly follow the new lords of conquest. Colin O'Riley is one of the victims of this new found tyranny. As in the tyrannies of the past this new one, that hides under the cover of due process and lawful restriction, also uses treachery, kidnapping, and murder to gain its evil end.

Download or read book Rules for Roommates written by Mary Lou Podlasiak and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000-09 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What could be more fun than having a roommate? If you’re living with a perpetrator of offensive behavior, you can probably think of a hundred reasons why you’d rather be flying solo. Unfortunately, something as trivial as an acid comment about your latest romantic interest can eventually lead to the need for a cease-fire. But still, the benefits can outweigh the risks. Cohabitation can lessen the burden of financial responsibilities, enrich our social lives, provide emotional support, and even add a certain degree of physical safety. (If nothing else, you’ll have someone nearby when you feel the need to check under your bed at night.) Whether you’re already there or not, something can be learned from those who have prevailed, as well as those who have chosen to jump ship. Through their experiences, you will be able to identify the counterproductive things we do that sabotage what could otherwise be a very rewarding relationship.

Book excerpt: The story of a counterfeiter, rapist, kidnapper, and serial killer—from the New York Times–bestselling author of Ted Bundy: Conversations with a Killer. Authorities opened the door on one man’s hidden life . . . Mike DeBardeleben was known as the Mall Passer for the way he passed off fake money at local shopping centers. But when US Secret Service agents finally arrested him, they were met with more than just phony bills. They found that their counterfeiter led a shocking double life . . . . . . only to discover a house of horrors. DeBardeleben’s home was littered with drugs, bondage gear, and a collection of audio tapes in which he recorded the abuse of his countless victims. As the evidence mounted, a terrifying profile emerged of a man who forced women to be his accomplices, practiced sadism, even dressed up in women’s clothes—a serial killer whose depraved fantasies led to a spree of violence that would last as long as eighteen years . . . and would end in a sentence of almost four hundred years in prison. As terrifying as it is true, this is the story of a man who proved to be, beyond the shadow of a doubt, Beyond Cruel.

Download or read book Millie Fierce written by Jane Manning and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2012-08-16 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If Fancy Nancy got angry. Really, really angry. Millie is quiet. Millie is sweet. Millie is mild. But the kids at school don't listen to her. And she never gets a piece of birthday cake with a flower on it. And some girls from her class walk right on top of her chalk drawing and smudge it. And they don't even say they're sorry! So that's when Millie decides she wants to be fierce! She frizzes out her hair, sharpens her nails and runs around like a wild thing. But she soon realizes that being fierce isn't the best way to get noticed either, especially when it makes you turn mean. So Millie decides to be nice--but to keep a little of that fierce backbone hidden inside her. In case she ever needs it again. With bright art and an adorable character, it's easy to empathize with Millie. Because everyone has a bad day, once in a while. Praise for MILLIE FIERCE “Millie Fierce is a delightfully naughty mix between Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are and Molly Bang’s When Sophie Gets Angry.”--School Library Journal
