Book Synopsis The Altruistic Imagination by : John H. Ehrenreich
Download or read book The Altruistic Imagination written by John H. Ehrenreich and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2014-01-21 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social work and social policy in the United States have always had a complex and troubled relationship. In The Altruistic Imagination, John H. Ehrenreich offers a critical interpretation of their intertwined histories, seeking to understand the problems that face these two vital institutions in American society. Ehrenreich demonstrates that the emphasis of social work has always vacillated between individual treatment and social reform. Tracing this ever-changing focus from the Progressive Era, through the development of the welfare state, the New Deal, and the affluent 1950s and 1960s, into the administration of Ronald Reagan, he places the evolution of social work in the context of political, cultural, and ideological trends, noting the paradoxes inherent in the attempt to provide essential services and reflect at the same time the intentions of the state. He concludes by examining the turning point faced by the social work profession in the 1980s, indicated by a return to casework and a withdrawal from social policy concerns.

Book Synopsis The Arab Lands under Ottoman Rule by : Jane Hathaway
Download or read book The Arab Lands under Ottoman Rule written by Jane Hathaway and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-12-06 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Arab Lands under Ottoman Rule assesses the effects of Ottoman rule on the Arab Lands of Egypt, Greater Syria, Iraq, and Yemen between 1516 and 1800. Drawing attention to the important history of these regions, the book challenges outmoded perceptions of this period as a demoralizing prelude to the rise of Arab nationalism and Arab nation-states in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. As well as exploring political events and developments, it delves into the extensive social, cultural, and economic changes that helped to shape the foundations of today's modern Middle and Near East. In doing so, it provides a detailed view of society, incorporating all socio-economic classes, as well as women, religious minorities, and slaves. This second edition has been significantly revised and updated and reflects the developments in research and scholarship since the publication of the first edition. Engaging with a wide range of primary sources and enhanced by a variety of maps and images to illustrate the text, The Arab Lands under Ottoman Rule is a unique and essential resource for students of early modern Ottoman history and the early modern Middle East.
Book Synopsis Jean Toomer and the Terrors of American History by : Charles Scruggs
Download or read book Jean Toomer and the Terrors of American History written by Charles Scruggs and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jean Toomer's Cane was the first major text of the Harlem Renaissance and the first important modernist text by an African-American writer. It powerfully depicts the terror in the history of American race relations, a public world of lynchings, race riots, and Jim Crow, and a private world of internalized conflict over identity and race which mirrored struggles in the culture at large. Toomer's own life reflected that internal conflict, and he has been an ambiguous figure in literary history, an author who wrote a text that had a tremendous impact on African American authors but who eventually tried to distance himself from Cane and from his identification as a black writer. In Jean Toomer and the Terrors of American History, Charles Scruggs and Lee VanDemarr examine original sources—Toomer's rediscovered early writings on politics and race, his extensive correspondence with Waldo Frank, and unpublished portions of his autobiographies—to show how the cultural wars of the 1920s influenced the shaping of Toomer's book and his subsequent efforts to escape the racial definitions of American society. That those definitions remain crucial for American society even today is one reason Toomer's work continues to fascinate and to influence contemporary writers and readers.

Book Synopsis Improving Quality in Healthcare by : Murray Anderson-Wallace
Download or read book Improving Quality in Healthcare written by Murray Anderson-Wallace and published by SAGE Publications Limited. This book was released on 2023-11-29 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is for anyone who is interested in improving quality in healthcare. It will appeal to those who are traditionally responsible for quality matters, as well as practicing clinicians and leaders. Unusually, it will also be as relevant to those who have the keenest interest in the quality of care - interested citizens. It is a deliberate antidote to the anti-intellectual, QI tool driven, mechanistic approach that still dominates much of healthcare quality improvement work. The authors - both of whom have extensive experience of working in and around quality issues in healthcare at a national, regional and local level - challenge such approaches, which they believe fail to take account of patient and organisational context and invite reductionism, cherry picking, atomisation of complex issues, leading ultimately to simplistic and unsustainable outcomes. Key features of the book: · An exploration of some of the often-overlooked and misunderstood core concepts of quality; their history and meaning in a contemporary context. · A framework to "question the work" using four interconnected conceptual domains as a valuable framework to consider improving quality and reducing failure demand. · Critical re-examination of the dominant approaches to change that are frequently adopted in "quality" work, many of which have been rooted in scientific management that have failed to live up to their promise – particularly transformational. · Exploring how an inter-disciplinary perspective can reframe aspects of quality thinking.
Book Synopsis New Approaches to Governance and Rule in Urban Europe Since 1500 by : Simon Gunn
Download or read book New Approaches to Governance and Rule in Urban Europe Since 1500 written by Simon Gunn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-03-31 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban power and politics are topics of abiding interest for students of the city. This exciting collection of essays explores how Europe’s cities have been governed across the last 500 years. Taken as a whole, it provides a unique historical overview of urban politics in early modern and modern Europe. At the same time, it guides the reader through the variety of ways in which power and governance are currently understood by historians and new directions in the subject. The essays are wide-ranging, covering Europe from Scandinavia to the Mediterranean, Russia to Ireland, between 1500 and the twentieth century. Each chapter employs a specific case-study to illuminate a way of examining how power worked in regard to topics such as women, popular culture or urban elites. A variety of approaches are deployed, including the study of ritual and performance, morality and conduct, governmentality and the state, infrastructure and the individual. Reflecting the state of the art in European urban history, the book is essential reading for anyone interested in the study of urban politics and government. It represents a fresh take on a rich subject and will stimulate a new generation of historical studies of power and the city.

Book Synopsis A Not-so-dismal Science by : Mancur Olson
Download or read book A Not-so-dismal Science written by Mancur Olson and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2000-01-06 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern economics is like a metropolitan area. Economists' ideas about business and markets are like the magnificent buildings of the city centre. Yet most growth and prosperity is in the suburbs — lately many of economics' greatest successes have been outside the traditional boundaries of the discipline. In the study of law, economic ideas have been the intellectual focus and `law and economics' has become a major field. In the study of politics, economists and political scientists using economics-type methods are uniquely influential. In sociology and history, economics has had a smaller but growing influence through `rational choice sociology' and `cliometrics'. The influence of the economists type thinking in other social sciences is bringing about a theoretical integration of all the social sciences under one overarching paradigm. The chapters of the book illustrate the intellectual advances that account for this unified view of economies and societies.
