Book excerpt: In this Do-It-Yourself mystery series that's perfect for lovers of HGTV home renovation shows, a designer looking for a quick house flip will discover that good fences don't always make good neighbors— Avery Baker never thought she’d leave Manhattan, until she inherited her aunt’s old Maine cottage and found her true calling—home renovation. But when Avery goes to work restoring a condominium, she discovers it’s another condo owner who’s been condemned... Avery and her partner, Derek, are fixing up a cute little condo in homey Waterfield, Maine, hoping for a quick turnaround and some extra money. It seems like a simple project—and Avery is looking forward to using her big-city experience with small spaces. But they didn’t expect to have their every move watched by the resident busybody in the condo, Hilda Shaw, who loves snooping on everyone’s comings and goings. When the busybody becomes a dead body, Avery suspects foul play. Soon she’s doing some snooping of her own—and it seems everyone in the complex has a secret. Could one of them be worth killing for? Avery needs to work fast, before someone decides to fix her...for good.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A daring investigation of Primo Levi's brief career as a fighter with the Italian Resistance, and the grim secret that haunted his life No other Auschwitz survivor has been as literarily powerful and historically influential as Primo Levi. Yet Levi was not only a victim or a witness. In the fall of 1943, at the very start of the Italian Resistance, he was a fighter, participating in the first attempts to launch guerrilla warfare against occupying Nazi forces. Those three months have been largely overlooked by Levi's biographers; indeed, they went strikingly unmentioned by Levi himself. For the rest of his life he barely acknowledged that autumn in the Alps. But an obscure passage in Levi's The Periodic Table hints that his deportation to Auschwitz was linked directly to an incident from that time: "an ugly secret" that had made him give up the struggle, "extinguishing all will to resist, indeed to live." What did Levi mean by those dramatic lines? Using extensive archival research, Sergio Luzzatto's groundbreaking Primo Levi's Resistance reconstructs the events of 1943 in vivid detail. Just days before Levi was captured, Luzzatto shows, his group summarily executed two teenagers who had sought to join the partisans, deciding the boys were reckless and couldn't be trusted. The brutal episode has been shrouded in silence, but its repercussions would shape Levi's life. Combining investigative flair with profound empathy, Primo Levi's Resistance offers startling insight into the origins of the moral complexity that runs through the work of Primo Levi himself.

Book excerpt: An invaluable addition to the Citadel 100 series that ranks the most prominent Italian figures in history--from the Chairman of the Board to the Mayor of New York City Now more than ever, Americans have entered into a passionate love affair with all things Italian, from the world-changing adventures of Christopher Columbus to the drama of opera to Italian cinema to the epic family saga of The Sopranos. The Italian 100 chronicles the rich legacy of Italians and Italian-Americans in a ranking of the most influential 100 and the enduring nature of their contributions. The giants who immeasurably changed the size and shape of our world--Galileo (ranked #1), Christopher Columbus (#2), and Marconi (#3)--grace the top of the list, while artistic and literary giants such as Michaelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Botticelli, Petrarch, and Dante feature prominently. Also profiled are the brilliant (and sometimes despotic) political leaders such as Niccolo Machiavelli, Lorenzo de' Medici, Garibaldi, Rudolph Giuliani, and Benito Mussolini, and geniuses of music, theater, and film such as Vivaldi, Puccini, Pavarotti, Fellini, Scorcese, and Sinatra. The Italian 100 also highlights less-familiar figures who have left legacies of equal magnitude, such as Guido of Arezzo, who invented the musical staff: Leonardo Fibonacci, who introduced Arabic numerals to the Western world, Saint Fabiola, the Roman matron credited with cofounding the first public hospital in Western Europe; and Bartolommeo Cristofori, inventor of the modern piano. Part cultural companion, part historical reference, and part celebration, The Italian 100 is a fresh and sometimes controversial look at a people who, throughout more than fifteencenturies, have had an enormous and profound effect on every aspect of the modern world.
