Download or read book Wetland Systems to Control Urban Runoff written by M. Scholz and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2006-09-29 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wetland Systems to Control Urban Runoff integrates natural and constructed wetlands, and sustainable drainage techniques into traditional water and wastewater systems used to treat surface runoff and associated diffuse pollution. The first part of the text introduces the fundamentals of water quality management, and water and wastewater treatment. The remaining focus of the text is on reviewing treatment technologies, disinfection issues, sludge treatment and disposal options, and current case studies related to constructed wetlands applied for runoff and diffuse pollution treatment. Professionals and students will be interested in the detailed design, operation, management, process control and water quality monitoring and applied modeling issues. * Contains a comprehensive collection of timely, novel and innovative research case studies in the area of wetland systems applied for the treatment of urban runoff * Demonstrates to practitioners how natural and constructed wetland systems can be integrated into traditional wastewater systems, which are predominantly applied for the treatment of surface runoff and diffuse pollution * Assesses the design, operation, management and water treatment performance of sustainable urban drainage systems including constructed wetlands
Book Synopsis Constructed Wetlands for Stormwater Management by : Shaw L. Yu
Download or read book Constructed Wetlands for Stormwater Management written by Shaw L. Yu and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the results of research to evaluate the potential of utilizing mitigated wetlands as stormwater Best Management Practices (BMPs). Results of wetland monitoring, wetland modeling, and geographic information system (GIS) development are presented. Average removal rates as high as 90% for total suspended solids (TSS), 65% for chemical oxygen demand (COD), 70% for total phosphorus (TP) and orthophosphate (OP), and 50% for zinc (Zn) were observed at study sites. Despite having stormwater runoff as a primary water source, the monitored sites supported apparently healthy and diverse vegetation, and a variety of wildlife. A mathematical model of transport of a pollutant in dissolved and particulate forms in a two segment, two-state system was developed. The model includes settling, diffusion, adsorption to plant and substrate, and vegetative uptake mechanisms. A GIS was developed to improve management of existing mitigated wetlands and to aid in siting of future mitigation sites. A link between a watershed model and this GIS is also described. The report concludes that mitigated wetlands may be as effective as conventional BMPs at improving the quality and at controlling the quantity of highway storm runoff.
Book Synopsis Testing of Best Management Practices for Controlling Highway Runoff, Phase II by : Shaw L. Yu
Download or read book Testing of Best Management Practices for Controlling Highway Runoff, Phase II written by Shaw L. Yu and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to obtain the detailed information necessary to develop design guidelines for the stormwater best management practices (BMPs) included in the Virginia Department of Transportation's Stormwater Management Manual, a field program was initiated in 1991 for testing the pollutant removal efficiency of selected BMPs. This report summarizes Phase II of this endeavor. A dry detention pond that drained a small, highly impervious area and a vegetated swale that received runoff from an urban highway were examined. Manual and automatic sampling techniques were used to monitor stormwater flowing into and out of the two facilities. Pollutant removal efficiencies were determined using a mass balance method. Pollutants measured were total suspended solids, chemical oxygen demand, total phosphorus, and zinc. The results suggest that, if properly designed, these types of facilities can be effective tools for removing stormwater pollution from highway runoff.

Book Synopsis Stormwater Management for Transportation Facilities by : Shaw L. Yu
Download or read book Stormwater Management for Transportation Facilities written by Shaw L. Yu and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 1993 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to highway design engineers, maintenance engineers, environmental personnel, administrators, and others responsible for the design, operation, and maintenance of stormwater management for highways and ancillary facilities. Information is presented on the basic hydrology needed to assess stormwater impacts and on the effectiveness of stormwater management techniques. Designers of highway facilities must consider stormwater management requirements within the context of both localized runoff impacts, as well as downstream effects of runoff. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes the management of both stormwater quantity and stormwater quality. Stormwater quantity includes an overview of methods of estimating runoff and management control practices. Stormwater quality management includes discussions of the most prevalent pollutants and best management practices (BMP) to minimize pollutants from transportation facilities. Various types of structural and non-structural methods are described, including their design considerations and efficiencies. Several stormwater management models are described, with special concern for highway applications. Highlights from the 1990 National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits are presented.

Book Synopsis Constructed Wetlands for Wastewater Treatment by : Donald A. Hammer
Download or read book Constructed Wetlands for Wastewater Treatment written by Donald A. Hammer and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-11-25 with total page 856 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both practical and theoretical, this book provides the basic principles of soil chemistry, hydrology, wetland ecology, microbiology, vegetation and wildlife as a sound introduction to this innovative technology to treat toxic wastewaters and sludges. The use of wetlands for acid mine drainage, and metals removal in municipal, urban runoff, and industrial systems is discussed. Case histories are also presented, demonstrating specific types of constructed wetlands and applications to municipal wastewater, home sites, coal and non-coal mining, coal-fired electric power plants, chemical and pulp industry, agriculture, landfill leachate, and urban stormwater. Construction and management guidelines are clearly explained, providing information on applicable policies and regulations, siting and construction, and operations and monitoring of constructed wetlands treatment systems. Recent theoretical and empirical results from operating systems and research facilities, including such new applications as nutrient removal from eutrophic lakes and urban stormwater treatment within highway rights-of-way, are included. This book is an ideal resource for wastewater treatment plants, consulting engineers, federal and state regulators, industrial environmental managers, municipalities, environmental health professionals, and ecologists.
