Book excerpt: Soil quality is the capacity of a specific kind of soil to function within natural or managed ecosystem boundaries to: ? sustain plant and animal productivity ? maintain or enhance water and air quality ? support human health and habitation Soil function describes what the soil does. Soil functions are: (1) sustaining biological activity, diversity, and productivity; (2) regulating and partitioning water and solute flow; (3) filtering and buffering, degrading, immobilizing, and detoxifying organic and inorganic materials, including industrial and municipal by-products and atmospheric deposition; (4) storing and cycling nutrients and other elements within the earth

Download or read book A Protocol for the Derivation of Environmental and Human Health Soil Quality Guidelines written by Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment. Subcommittee on Environmental Quality Criteria for Contaminated Sites and published by Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment. This book was released on 1996 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document provides the rationale and guidance for developing environmental and human health soil quality guidelines for contaminated sites in Canada. It begins with background information on the National Contaminated Sites Remediation Program assessment and remediation framework, including the scientific tools developed to help assess and remediate contaminated sites. Information on the principles behind the soil quality guidelines derivation protocol is also included. This is followed by description of the processes for deriving environmental and human health guidelines. The protocol considers the effects of contaminated soil exposure on human and ecological receptors for given land uses (agricultural, residential/parkland, commercial, and industrial). The final section gives guidance on derivation of the final soil quality guideline. Appendices include information on methods and models employed in the ecological sections of the document, and on check mechanisms for indirect exposure from soil contaminants for the human health guidelines.

Download or read book Soil Quality Standards for Trace Elements written by Graham Merrington and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-08-30 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive and practical overview of the state of the science, Soil Quality Standards for Trace Elements: Derivation, Implementation, and Interpretation addresses the derivation of soil quality standards for trace elements and the implementation of these standards within regulatory and risk assessment frameworks. Forty experts from 11 countries across Europe, Asia, and North America--a multidisciplinary group of government policy makers and regulators, academics, industry representatives, and consultants--provide a focused discussion on the science and methods underpinning the derivation of soil quality standards for trace elements. Outlines the supporting science for setting environmental and human health standards Covers the application and practical use of soil quality standards for trace elements Contains recommendations on the development and use of soil quality standards for trace elements Identifies best practices in accounting for (bio)availability and exposure modelling in standard setting for soils The book provides a clear description of how to derive and implement soil quality standards for trace elements in order to assess human and environmental risks. It covers scientific developments useful for resolving discrepancies in the setting and implementation of soil quality standards. It provides useful tips, including do's, and don'ts on how to deal with issues such as variation of the natural background and soil type dependent toxicity.
