Book Synopsis Urban Stormwater Management in the United States by : National Research Council
Download or read book Urban Stormwater Management in the United States written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-03-17 with total page 611 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid conversion of land to urban and suburban areas has profoundly altered how water flows during and following storm events, putting higher volumes of water and more pollutants into the nation's rivers, lakes, and estuaries. These changes have degraded water quality and habitat in virtually every urban stream system. The Clean Water Act regulatory framework for addressing sewage and industrial wastes is not well suited to the more difficult problem of stormwater discharges. This book calls for an entirely new permitting structure that would put authority and accountability for stormwater discharges at the municipal level. A number of additional actions, such as conserving natural areas, reducing hard surface cover (e.g., roads and parking lots), and retrofitting urban areas with features that hold and treat stormwater, are recommended.
Book Synopsis Stormwater Infiltration in the Highway Environment by : Aaron Poresky
Download or read book Stormwater Infiltration in the Highway Environment written by Aaron Poresky and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The infiltration approach to stormwater management involves the design, construction, and operation of engineered systems that infiltrate stormwater runoff into soils. These systems, referred to as "infiltration best management practices (BMPs)," are intended to reduce the volume of stormwater runoff and associated pollutants that discharge to stormwater systems and receive waters via surface runoff. The TRB National Cooperative Highway Research Program's NCHRP Research Report 922: Stormwater Infiltration in the Highway Environment: Guidance Manual supports evaluation, selection, siting, design, and construction of infiltration BMPs in the highway environment. It is also intended to identify limitations on the use of infiltration and determine the need for alternative non-infiltration-based stormwater management approaches.

Book Synopsis Evaluation and Management of Highway Runoff Water Quality by : G. Kenneth Young
Download or read book Evaluation and Management of Highway Runoff Water Quality written by G. Kenneth Young and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this manual is to gather and to synthesize the results of past documentation and research on highway stormwater runoff into a single-volume user's manual on water quality impact assessment and mitigation. The manual will be useful to highway designers and environmental professionals by presenting the available and appropriate impact prediction and mitigation tools for use during highway project planning and development activities. The development of this document had three components: a literature search on existing research results and operational findings on highway stormwater runoff that identifies existing water quality impact assessment and mitigation techniques; interviews with highway practitioners concerning the use of research results including maintenance of mitigation measures; and synthesis of the accumulated information into this single-volume, practical guidance manual. This manual is intended to be a self-contained desk reference for highway practitioners. An extensive bibliography is included, and the mathematical nomenclature is unified among the sections.
