Book excerpt: Written and edited by a team of specialists at Max Fordham LLP, one of the UK's leading environmental and building services engineering consultancies, Environmental Design is the result of their extensive experience in designing environmentally-friendly buildings. The principles of their approach, which they have taught in numerous schools of architecture and engineering, are clearly presented here. The book starts with some basic scientific principles and environmental issues and then moves on to site planning, energy use, materials and building form. Natural ventilation systems, high-efficiency mechanical equipment and alternative energy sources are also covered. State-of-the-art buildings of exceptional quality are incorporated throughout the text and illustrate the authors' belief that environmentally responsible architecture can be visually exciting. They conclude with a selection of detailed case studies of award-winning projects - including, new for this third edition, Beaufort Court, King's Langley and the National Trust Headquarters, Swindon. This book is essential reading for architects, engineers, planners and students of these disciplines.

Book excerpt: Originally devised as a guide for converting from imperial to metric measurements, 'The Metric Handbook' has since been totally transformed into a major international handbook of planning and design data. The second edition has been completely updated, with most chapters being totally rewritten, to meet the needs of the modern designer. The book contains nearly 50 chapters dealing with all the principal building types from airports, factories and warehouses, offices shops and hospitals, to schools, religious buildings and libraries. For each building type 'The Metric Handbook' gives the basic design requirements and all the principal dimensional data. Several chapters deal with general aspects of building such as materials, lighting, acoustics and tropical design. There are also sections on general design data, including details of human dimensions and space requirements. It is a unique authoritative reference for solving everyday planning problems. In its various editions it has sold over 100,000 copies worldwide, and continues to be a reference work belonging on every design office desk or drawing board.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Energy Conservation in the Design of Multi-Storey Buildings documents the papers presented at an International Symposium held at The University of Sydney, 1-3 June 1983, sponsored by The University of Sydney, the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering, the Council for Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, and the Institution of Engineers Australia. The volume contains 13 papers organized into two parts. Part I deals with predictive methods. It includes papers that describe the design of Australian projects where energy was a major issue; examine energy conservative building design from the standpoints of New York and Singapore; present a design tool for estimating energy consumption and costs; and consider limitations in the application of computers to the design of the airconditioning plant. Part II is devoted to energy management. The papers survey energy management in Australian office buildings and hospitals; describe energy audits in the United States; and discusses methods for the computer control of energy systems.

Book excerpt: First published in 1990, the Handbook of Educational Ideas and Practices was written for practitioners and students in the field of education and its related services and was designed to appeal to educationists no matter what their nationality. Focusing mainly on compulsory schooling, it provides summaries of the thinking, research findings, and innovatory practices current at the time. However, the book is also careful to present a complete picture of education and therefore includes a separate section for education beyond school which covers pre-school level, post-secondary level, and adult and continuing education. There are also other chapters dealing with aspects of organization, curriculum, and teaching in various forms of tertiary education. Indeed, each topic has been discussed by an acknowledged expert writing in sufficient detail in order to resist trivialization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past several years, an impressive array of technologies, information, and other resources have been developed to improve the way school buildings are designed and constructed. These tools can be used to change the traditional approach to school building in the United States - an approach that has a considerable negative impact on the natural environment and has produced many facilities that are costly to operate, difficult to maintain, and in some cases, unhealthy for children and staff. With tens of billions of dollars to be invested in school building programs in the coming years, states and school districts have a unique opportunity to use the wealth of information and other resources now available to maximize their investment in school facilities.

Book excerpt: Architectural Press Library of Design and Detailing: Acoustic Design focuses on the techniques and principles employed in acoustic design, as well as room acoustics, hearing, speech, sound insulation, and noise control and design. The book first elaborates on the perception of sound, properties of sound, and sound in the built form. Concerns cover sound absorption, room acoustics, sound insulation, physical data, units and measurement, sound at a point, and hearing and speech. The manuscript then takes a look at noise control and design. Topics include prediction and prescription, control at source, control in the sound path, building types, and building elements. The text is a valuable source of information for researchers interested in acoustic design.

This book was released on 2007 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Department of Energy's Rebuild America EnergySmart Schools program provides school boards, administrators, and design staff with guidance to help make informed decisions about energy and environmental issues important to school systems and communities. "The National Best Practices Manual for Building High Performance Schools" is a part of the suite of products developed to promote energy efficiency and renewable energy in schools. It was developed specifically for architects and engineers who are responsible for designing or retrofitting schools, and for the project managers who work with the design teams. The "Energy Design Guidelines for High Performance Schools," available for seven climate zones across the United States, was developed for school boards, administrators, and design staff to help make informed design decisions about energy and environmental issues important to school systems and communities. The design strategies presented here are organized into 10 chapters covering important design disciplines and goals: site design; daylighting and windows; energy-efficient building shell; lighting and electrical systems; mechanical and ventilation systems; renewable energy systems; water conservation; recycling systems and waste management; transportation; and resource-efficient building products. An additional chapter addresses commissioning and maintenance practices. Applying these guidelines will result in schools that are healthy, comfortable, energy efficient, resource efficient, water efficient, safe, secure, adaptable, and easy to operate and maintain. This manual provides details and implementation rules for individual design strategies. Though these individual strategies can improve a building's energy efficiency, only through whole-building analysis and integrated design can energy and cost concerns be balanced most effectively. A list of commissioning references and resources is included. Most chapters contain tables, footnotes, figures, and references. [The National Best Practices Manual for High Performance Schools was adapted from the Collaborative for High Performance Schools Inc.'s Best Practices Manual, Volume II. Modifications were developed by Eley Associates and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. The adaptation was funded by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Building Technology, State and Community Programs. The commissioning section of this manual is a modified version of the Building Commissioning Guidelines prepared for Pacific Gas & Electric Company by Portland Energy Conservation, Inc. for the Energy Design Resources program. Certain sections of this document were excerpted and modified from Commissioning for Better Buildings in Oregon, written by PECI for the Oregon Office of Energy, and Building Commissioning: The Key to Quality Assurance, written by PECI for the U.S. Department of Energy's Rebuild America program.].
