Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the history and evolution of district heating networks, with a focus on current and future issues of the district heating sector. Novel developments in the field of low temperature district heating are studied, limitations for safe operation and avoidance of bacteria are considered, and the associated improved performance of the system with fewer network losses is presented. This book showcases how the evolution of district heating networks is linked to the increased use of renewables and de-carbonized heat sources with specific focus to waste heat streams and solar energy systems. Considering the novelty of these technologies, technological developments and funding schemes for these investments are still immature to some extent. For that reason, a comprehensive review of the main aspects of energy planning as well as district heating economics and financing schemes for large-scale investments in renewable energy systems for district energy systems is performed. In the light of digitalization, networks are increasingly monitored, allowing for a drastic change in the approach for network operation. This book also explores the increased digitization and monitoring of networks and how this impacts network operation. This book is of interest to engineers, academics and officials interested in energy systems, presenting readers with the key concepts and tools to adapt to the evolution of district heating into an integrated, digitized and higher performing system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Low?Temperature District Heating Implementation Guidebook. This guidebook was written between 2018 and 2021 by seventeen authors within the IEA DHC/CHP TS2 annex. The input came from 250+ literature references and 165 inspiration initiatives to obtain lower temperatures in buildings and heat distribution networks. The author group wrote 40 internal documents about early implementations of low?temperature district heating. Fifteen of these early implementations are presented in this guidebook. The guidebook contains aggregated information about the main economic drivers for low?temperature district heating, how to obtain lower temperatures in heating systems inside existing and new buildings, and how to obtain lower temperatures in existing and new heat distribution networks. An applied study of a campus system in Darmstadt shows the possibility of reducing temperatures in an existing heat distribution network with rather high temperatures. The competitiveness of low?temperature district heating is explored by analysing business models and heat distribution costs. Early adopters of low?temperature district heating are presented by examples and by identified transition strategies. Five groups of network configurations with fourteen variants are presented to be used for low?temperature district heating. Finally, all 165 identified inspiration initiatives and all 137 locations mentioned are listed.

Book excerpt: In urban areas, moving hot and cold air efficiently is essential. By connecting suitable customer heat and cold demands with available heat and cold sources, resource use can be lower when compared to conventional heat and cold supply, such as boilers and air conditioners. Chapters about the fundamental idea, energy markets, customer demands, load variations, supply, environmental impact, distribution, substations, system functioning, economics, planning, historical development, current and future use, organization, and information sources concerning the flows of heat and cold in district heating and cooling systems are included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conventional thermal power generating plants reject a large amount of energy every year. If this rejected heat were to be used through district heating networks, given prior energy valorisation, there would be a noticeable decrease in the amount of fossil fuels imported for heating. As a consequence, benefits would be experienced in the form of an increase in energy efficiency, an improvement in energy security, and a minimisation of emitted greenhouse gases. Given that heat demand is not expected to decrease significantly in the medium term, district heating networks show the greatest potential for the development of cogeneration. Due to their cost competitiveness, flexibility in terms of the ability to use renewable energy resources (such as geothermal or solar thermal) and fossil fuels (more specifically the residual heat from combustion), and the fact that, in some cases, losses to a country/region’s energy balance can be easily integrated into district heating networks (which would not be the case in a “fully electric” future), district heating (and cooling) networks and cogeneration could become a key element for a future with greater energy security, while being more sustainable, if appropriate measures were implemented. This book therefore seeks to propose an energy strategy for a number of cities/regions/countries by proposing appropriate measures supported by detailed case studies.

Book excerpt: Used historically in urban areas but now mainly in institutions, district heating and cooling systemsâ€"efficient centralized energy systems that may use energy sources other than petroleumâ€"have gained renewed interest. This volume is a nontechnical examination of the history and current extent of district heating and cooling systems in the United States, their costs and benefits, technical requirements, market demand for them, and European experience with such systems, with major focus on the problems of financing, regulation, and taxation. Appendixes provide case studies of cities and towns currently using district heating and cooling systems.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from District Heating: A Brief Exposition of the Development of District Heating and Its Position Among Public Utilities The preparation of this work was prompted by the hope that it might call attention to certain phases of District Heating which have not been extensively discussed by other writers. It has been the endeavor of the authors to take up in a brief manner the development of the art of District Heating, as far as possible, from a non-technical standpoint, in order that those who have not had experience with this subject might obtain a general knowledge of District Heating and its relation to other public utilities. As a rule the discussion of the more involved technical points has been avoided, the reader being referred to standard text-books and other engineering literature which take up these subjects in detail.
