Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Later Nineteenth Century IN arranging the last volume Of this History of European Literature, it may not be improper to supply that part of a possible general preface which, for more reasons than one, could not be given in the first as it actually appeared. I have seen, during the earlier course of the publication, remarks - per haps natural, if not entirely reasonable - expressing dissatisfaction with the irregular order of the appear ance of the volumes, and the jagged outline - as of tallies with one-half wanting - which was in some cases presented. A little thought might, I think, have shown the critics that this, if not unavoidable, was by far the least of two or more evils; and a slight sketch Of the history Of the undertaking may make it clearer. Book excerpt: This handbook offers students and researchers a compact introduction to the nineteenth-century American novel in the light of current debates, theoretical concepts, and critical methodologies. The volume turns to the nineteenth century as a formative era in American literary history, a time that saw both the rise of the novel as a genre, and the emergence of an independent, confident American culture. A broad range of concise essays by European and American scholars demonstrates how some of America‘s most well-known and influential novels responded to and participated in the radical transformations that characterized American culture between the early republic and the age of imperial expansion. Part I consists of 7 systematic essays on key historical and critical frameworks ― including debates aboutrace and citizenship, transnationalism, environmentalism and print culture, as well as sentimentalism, romance and the gothic, realism and naturalism. Part II provides 22 essays on individual novels, each combining an introduction to relevant cultural contexts with a fresh close reading and the discussion of critical perspectives shaped by literary and cultural theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Novel Science is the first in-depth study of the shocking, groundbreaking, and sometimes beautiful writings of the gentlemen of the “heroic age” of geology and of the contribution these men made to the literary culture of their day. For these men, literature was an essential part of the practice of science itself, as important to their efforts as mapmaking, fieldwork, and observation. The reading and writing of imaginative literatures helped them to discover, imagine, debate, and give shape and meaning to millions of years of previously undiscovered earth history. Borrowing from the historical fictions of Walter Scott and the poetry of Lord Byron, they invented geology as a science, discovered many of the creatures we now call the dinosaurs, and were the first to unravel and map the sequence and structure of stratified rock. As Adelene Buckland shows, they did this by rejecting the grand narratives of older theories of the earth or of biblical cosmogony: theirs would be a humble science, faithfully recording minute details and leaving the big picture for future generations to paint. Buckland also reveals how these scientists—just as they had drawn inspiration from their literary predecessors—gave Victorian realist novelists such as George Eliot, Charles Kingsley, and Charles Dickens a powerful language with which to create dark and disturbing ruptures in the too-seductive sweep of story.

Mill described these two writers as 'the two great seminal minds of England in their age', and claimed that' there is hardly to be found in England an individual of any importance in the world of mind who. Did not first learn to think from one Of these two. 1 In another essay (1840) Mill tried to indicate the quality of their influence: 'by Bentham' he wrote, 'beyond all others, men have been led to ask themselves in regard to any ancient or received opinion, Is it true? And by Coleridge, What Is the meaning of It. P '2 In Bentham the spirit Of the eighteenth century lived on taking his stand, like any Brobdingnagian sage or visitor froin China, 'outside the received Opinion', he 'surveyed it as an entire stranger to it'. Arthur Rimbaud The active and colourful lives of the poets of nineteenth-century France are reflected in the diversity and vibrancy of their works. At once sacred and profane, passionate and satirical, these remarkable and innovative poems explore the complexities of human emotion and ponder the great questions of religion and art. They form as rich a body of work as any one age and language has ever produced. This unique anthology includes generous selections from the six nineteenth-century French poets most often read in the English-speaking world today: Lamartine, Hugo, Baudelaire, Verlaine, Rimbaud, and Mallarmé. Modern translations are printed opposite the original French verse, and the edition contains over a thousand lines of poetry never previously translated into English.
