Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presentations of war and violence in museums generally oscillate between the fascination of terror and its instruments and the didactic urge to explain violence and, by analysing it, make it easier to handle and prevent. The museums concerned also have to face up to these basic issues about the social and institutional handling of war and violence. Does war really belong in museums? And if it does, what objectives and means are involved? Can museums avoid trivializing and aestheticising war, transforming violence, injury, death and trauma into tourist sights? What images of shock or identification does one generate - and what images would be desirable?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Joseph Steward fought in the Great War, from the Battle of the Somme to the final offensives of 1918, and he was an acute, unflinching observer of the conflict he took part in - of life and death on the Western Front. He was a writer, too. He recorded his experiences in accurate detail and later in life he wrote a graphic fictionalized account of his wartime career - the story of his war, his comrades and his platoon. His narrative is published here for the first time, edited, annotated and with an introduction by Andrew Robertshaw and Steve Roberts. Their research into Stewards story is a fascinating example of how such work can be used to give a vivid insight into the experiences of a Great War ancestor. About the EditorsAndrew Robertshaw is Curator/Manager of The Royal Logistic Corps Museum in Deepcut, Surrey. For the past twelve years he has been coordinating a group conducting an archaeological dig of British trenches and other sites on the Somme. He frequently appears on television as a commentator on battlefield archaeology and the soldier in history. His publications include A Soldiers Life, The Somme 1st July 1916, Digging the Trenches (with David Kenyon) and Ghosts of the Somme (with Alastair Fraser and Steve Roberts).Steve Roberts is a retired police officer and an ex-regular soldier. He has a keen interest in military history and as a result of his grandfathers service a particular passion for the Great War. He specializes in researching the individuals who served during the period and has worked in this field on a number of television projects. He is a founder member of the Great War archaeology group No Mans Land and also a battlefield guide regularly taking groups to France and Belgium. He has previously co-authored Ghosts on the Somme (with Alastair Fraser and Andrew Robertshaw)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As German troops entered Paris following their victory in June 1940, the American journalist William L. Shirer observed that they carried cameras and behaved as "naïve tourists." One of the first things Hitler did after his victory was to tour occupied Paris, where he was famously photographed in front of the Eiffel Tower. Focusing on tourism by German personnel, military and civil, and French civilians during the war, as well as war-related memory tourism since, War Tourism addresses the fundamental linkages between the two. As Bertram M. Gordon shows, Germans toured occupied France by the thousands in groups organized by their army and guided by suggestions in magazines such as Der Deutsche Wegleiter fr Paris [The German Guide for Paris]. Despite the hardships imposed by war and occupation, many French civilians continued to take holidays. Facilitated by the Popular Front legislation of 1936, this solidified the practice of workers' vacations, leading to a postwar surge in tourism. After the end of the war, the phenomenon of memory tourism transformed sites such as the Maginot Line fortresses. The influx of tourists with links either directly or indirectly to the war took hold and continues to play a significant economic role in Normandy and elsewhere. As France moved from wartime to a postwar era of reconciliation and European Union, memory tourism has held strong and exerts significant influence across the country.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever wanted to go inside a top secret military base, deep underground? Or even sit inside a Cold War fighter plane? Or perhaps ride in a military vehicle? If so, then you have an opportunity to do so if you visit Northern Europe. In Sweden, Norway, and Denmark you would be able to visit former top secret military bases, see planes, Armoured Personnel Carriers (APC), Infantry Fighting Vehicles (IFV), and tanks. But that is not all, there is a wealth of military history in the North of Europe. Due to its location, the North of Europe has seen history. From the Napoleonic wars between Sweden and Denmark-Norway, as well as Russia, to the Second World War. From the Nazi occupation of Norway and Denmark and on into the Cold War. This books acts an introduction to the fascinating world of military history and equipment in the North of Europe. It will present you abandoned bases and historic battlefields as well as military equipment, both old and new, and captivating museums. From the individual soldier's kit and weapons to camouflage and on to lorries. Even bandvagns! I have presented 259 illustrations, many of the pictures I have taken in museums but some have been taken at open days at military bases and even of some of the stuff I find by the wayside.Everything of interest to a military enthusiast. Not just the famous battles like Narvik but also some of the more obscure battles like Hjerpe Skans. Not just famous places like Tromsø fjord, where the Tirpitz sank, and the Atlantic Wall fortresses, but lesser known places, such as Airfield 19, and out of the way bunkers as well as sites hidden in the forest. Not just Leopards and S-tanks but also Swedish army mess kits / stoves. After the Cold War, Sweden went a bit insane and decided to all but abolish its armed forces in what it called a "strategic time out". That resulted in a lot of Swedish military bases being closed down and bunkers filled with concrete, and I'll mention a few in this book. Some places have official tours of abandoned places such as in Boden, in the north of Sweden, and some have been opened as museums. This is probably the best way to visit old military bases, fortresses, and bunkers and this books gives information on those places including location so that you can go and visit them.I have divided this book up into parts. Starting with the individual soldier, I have covered a bit about uniforms and kit as well as medals. From old Second World War uniforms to modern uniforms like the Swedish M90. Then I present a review of some of the military vehicles found in the north such as Leopard tanks and Combat Vehicle 90s as well as many more. Following that, there is a section on bases. I have been a bit liberal with the definition of "base" as it includes any kind of military establishments such as bunkers and vehicle storage areas as well as once secret coastal artillery fortresses which you can visit, and I have included location information for them as well. I then have a section on battlefields as well as one on museums and other places to visit, basically places where you can go to view much of the equipment featured in this book and much more. Again, I have included location information for those who wish to tour theses places (and I hope you do). Hopefully this book will inspire you to want to go out a visit these sites and museums. To see the stuff in the book and much more for yourself. So, enjoy and have fun ...
