Book excerpt: Estimates indicate that around 20-25 percent of the active population of Lebanon derives at least part of its livelihoods from agriculture. Nevertheless, the majority of farmers live below the upper poverty line of 4 USD per day. The enhancement of food security, rural development and sustainable resources management are, thus, imperative and they are targeted as key priorities. In order to bring effective improvements at field level, however, the joint efforts of all stakeholders are required, from decision-makers to agricultural practitioners. The current Field Guide has been prepared as a practical and technical tool that can well respond to the current challenges in land reclamation for soil and water management and, ultimately, support final beneficiaries and agricultural agents through the provision of clear indicators and potential costs. The Guide, thus, should be considered not simply as a compendium of land reclamation and water management practices, but also as a manual for implementers and specialists. The Guide provides a complete set of instructions to implement an extensive range of land reclamation and water management solutions to achieve optimal employment of resources, and it also takes in due consideration the constraint represented by the availability of resources for farmers willing to improve their practices. The illustrated techniques are presented together with realistic estimates of required manual work, labor employment and financial costs, for a correct evaluation based on local and individual needs and priorities and the subsequent direct implementation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water Resources Management VIII contains papers presented at the eighth conference in a biennial series organised by the Wessex Institute. First held in 2001, the Conference includes the work of scientists, practitioners and other experts regarding the sustainable management of water resources. It is predicted that population growth and irregular precipitation due to climate change may lead to more restrict ed access to water in certain regions of the world. The problem will be aggravated by human activities that affect the quality of available water. In order to improve strategies for dealing with a scarcity of potable water, it is important to review and compare the performance of current technologies and practices in order to select those that will provide the most effective approaches. It is also important that technologies and practices be able to respond with agility to changing conditions. New ways of thinking are required in order to successfully predict future trends and prepare adequate sustainable solutions. The papers included in this book cover such topics as: Water Management and Planning; Water Rights and Accessibility; Water Markets and Policies; Climate Change; Irrigation; Urban Water Management; Hydraulic Engineering; Water Quality; Pollution Contaminants and Control; River Basin Management; Flood Risk Management; Geo-politics of Water; Water Resources and Economics; Governance and Regulations; Desalination; Water Services.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Drawing on original field work in cities across the rapidly urbanizing global south, the book examines the contribution of urban agriculture and city farming to livelihoods and food security. Case studies cover food production diversification for robust and secure food provision; the socio-economic and agronomic aspects of urban composting; urban agriculture as a viable livelihood strategy; strategies for integrating city farming into urban landscapes; and the complex social-ecological networks of urban agriculture. Other case studies look at public health aspects including the impact of pesticides, micro-biological risks, pollution and water contamination on food production and people. Ultimately the book calls on city farmers, politicians, environmentalists and regulatory bodies to work together to improve the long term sustainability of urban farming as a major, secure source of food and employment for urban populations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, especially with the approach of the 21st Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Paris in late 2015, the number of publications, conferences and meetings on climate change has been growing exponentially. Yet uncertainties remain concerning rural tropical areas where models are forecasting the onset of multiple disorders and trends are unclear. Meanwhile, the impact of climate change on the poorest communities is regularly documented, often prompting alarmist reactions. How can food security be achieved while adapting to and mitigating climate change? What are the main threats to agriculture in developing countries? How do farmers in these countries cope with the threats? What does agricultural research propose? What options have yet to be investigated? A broad scope of scientific research is underway to address these challenges. Diverse solutions are available, including new agricultural practices, water management, agricultural waste recycling, diagnosis of emerging diseases, payment for ecosystem services, etc. Gaining insight into the financial and political mechanisms that underlie international climate negotiations is also essential to design practical ways to deal with climate issues and meet sustainable development requirements in collaboration with farmers. This book pools the wealth of experience of dozens of researchers and development officers from a range of disciplines. We have focused on making it detailed, accurate and hopefully easy to read for researchers, students and all other informed readers.

Book excerpt: Available online: https://pub.norden.org/temanord2023-523/ Over the 15 past years, leakages of millions of plastic biocarriers - supports for bacterial growth used in certain types of Wastewater Treatment Plants have been reported in riverine and marine environments. In most cases, the biocarriers are not recovered, contributing to the issue of global plastic pollution. The objective of this report is to develop guidelines for the safe management of biocarriers based on proven-effective existing technical solutions and management measures, with the overarching goal of preventing releases of biocarriers in the marine and riverine environments. A holistic approach, encompassing every step of the biocarriers’ life cycle, helped to identify possible improvements in production, transportation, storage, engineering, facility operation, and biocarrier disposal.

Book excerpt: This open access book brings together research studies, developments, and application-related flash flood topics on wadi systems in arid regions. The major merit of this comprehensive book is its focus on research and technical papers as well as case study applications in different regions worldwide that cover many topics and answer several scientific questions. The book chapters comprehensively and significantly highlight different scientific research disciplines related to wadi flash floods, including climatology, hydrological models, new monitoring techniques, remote sensing techniques, field investigations, international collaboration projects, risk assessment and mitigation, sedimentation and sediment transport, and groundwater quality and quantity assessment and management. In this book, the contributing authors (engineers, researchers, and professionals) introduce their recent scientific findings to develop suitable, applicable, and innovative tools for forecasting, mitigation, and water management as well as society development under seven main research themes as follows: Part 1. Wadi Flash Flood Challenges and Strategies Part 2. Hydrometeorology and Climate Changes Part 3. Rainfall–Runoff Modeling and Approaches Part 4. Disaster Risk Reduction and Mitigation Part 5. Reservoir Sedimentation and Sediment Yield Part 6. Groundwater Management Part 7. Application and Case Studies The book includes selected high-quality papers from five series of the International Symposium on Flash Floods in Wadi Systems (ISFF) that were held in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2020 in Japan, Egypt, Oman, Morocco, and Japan, respectively. These collections of chapters could provide valuable guidance and scientific content not only for academics, researchers, and students but also for decision-makers in the MENA region and worldwide.
