Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: State transportation agencies (STAs) rely on implementing innovative new processes and technology for managing roadway assets; LiDAR surveys are one of these key enabling technologies. LiDAR surveys comprise an ever-evolving set of technologies that allow for a rapid, yet very accurate, collection of roadway asset data through a single effort which, when specified, integrated, and used correctly, can result in efficient workflows for agencies. While STAs may already be collecting data for specific purposes, these efforts are often duplicated within various agency disciplines using a variety of collection methods and standards. LiDAR surveys help consolidate resources, thus maximizing funding and enhancing the accuracy and integration of information. While the process for implementing LiDAR surveys will depend on a number of factors — most notably the agency’s current pre-construction, post-construction, asset inventory practices, process maturity, internal technical resources, and available funding — this guide draws the decision makers’ attention to the key issues that must be addressed for the optimization of data collection for use in an enterprise digital data solution. These include developing information requirements for data collection and products to be delivered for specific purposes and disciplines within the agency, and implementing the data collection program itself.

This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Light detection and ranging (LIDAR) is an emerging remote-sensing technology with promising potential to assist in mapping, monitoring, and assessment of forest resources. Continuous technological advancement and substantial reductions in data acquisition cost have enabled acquisition of laser data over entire states and regions. These developments have triggered an explosion of interest in LIDAR technology. Despite a growing body of peer-reviewed literature documenting the merits of LIDAR for forest assessment, management, and planning, there seems to be little information describing in detail the acquisition, quality assessment, and processing of laser data for forestry applications. This report addresses this information deficit by providing a foundational knowledge base containing answers to the most frequently asked questions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A systematic, in-depth introduction to theories and principles of Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology is long overdue, as it is the most important geospatial data acquisition technology to be introduced in recent years. An advanced discussion, this text fills the void. Professionals in fields ranging from geology, geography and geoinformatics to physics, transportation, and law enforcement will benefit from this comprehensive discussion of topographic LiDAR principles, systems, data acquisition, and data processing techniques. The book covers ranging and scanning fundamentals, and broad, contemporary analysis of airborne LiDAR systems, as well as those situated on land and in space. The authors present data collection at the signal level in terms of waveforms and their properties; at the system level with regard to calibration and georeferencing; and at the data level to discuss error budget, quality control, and data organization. They devote the bulk of the book to LiDAR data processing and information extraction and elaborate on recent developments in building extraction and reconstruction, highlighting quality and performance evaluations. There is also extensive discussion of the state-of-the-art technological developments used in: filtering algorithms for digital terrain model generation; strip adjustment of data for registration; co-registration of LiDAR data with imagery; forestry inventory; and surveying. Readers get insight into why LiDAR is the effective tool of choice to collect massive volumes of explicit 3-D data with unprecedented accuracy and simplicity. Compiled by leading experts talking about much of their own pioneering work, this book will give researchers, professionals, and senior students novel ideas to supplement their own experience and practices.

Book excerpt: The research objective was to evaluate mobile LiDAR technology to enhance safety, determine efficiency gains, accuracy benefits, technical issues, and cost benefits of using this technology with a focus on collection, processing, and storage of the data into current WSDOT business processes. Vehicle mounted terrestrial mobile LiDAR systems have been developed to capture geospatial data of large highway areas at highway speed for highway surveying, asset management, as-built documentation, and maintenance operations. This tool presents an opportunity for WSDOT to consolidate geospatial data collection operations, and improve efficiency, safety for workers, and mobility of traveling public. A field pilot study was conducted to collect empirical data for feasibility evaluation and cost benefit analyses.

Book excerpt: LiDAR technology, introduced in the late 90s, has received wide acceptance in airborne surveying as a leading tool for obtaining high-quality surface data at decimeter-level vertical accuracy in an unprecedentedly short turnaround time. State-of-the-art LiDAR systems can easily achieve 2-3 cm ranging accuracy, which is certainly the accuracy range required by engineering-scale mapping. However, this is also the accuracy range that cannot be realized by routine navigation-based direct sensor platform orientation. The main objective of the project was to achieve this accuracy as closely as possible and then introduce it into the daily operation of ODOT Office of Aerial Engineering. Several tests confirmed that by using LiDAR specific ground targets, engineering-scale mapping accuracy can be achieved in normal production. The final report presents surface modeling studies, sensor calibration developments, the concept and design of LiDAR specific ground targets; followed by performance validation results, based on test flights performed by the OAE staff and preliminary investigation of image fusion with LiDAR data.

This manual shows a hands-on operator how to work across the range of geospatial science and technology, whether as a user or as a contractor of services employing these technologies, and without either specialist education or substantial experience. The manual covers the fundamentals of each of these topical areas, providing the requisite mathematics, computer science and physics necessary to understand how the technologies work, assuming some elementary background in calculus and physics. It also shows how the technologies can be used together and focuses on their commonalities. A number of applications such as mapping and environmental modeling are presented, and a website accompanies the book.

This book was released on 2007-08-16 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Floodplain maps serve as the basis for determining whether homes or buildings require flood insurance under the National Flood Insurance Program run by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Approximately $650 billion in insured assets are now covered under the program. FEMA is modernizing floodplain maps to better serve the program. However, concerns have been raised as to the adequacy of the base map information available to support floodplain map modernization. Elevation Data for Floodplain Mapping shows that there is sufficient two-dimensional base map imagery to meet FEMA's flood map modernization goals, but that the three-dimensional base elevation data that are needed to determine whether a building should have flood insurance are not adequate. This book makes recommendations for a new national digital elevation data collection program to redress the inadequacy. Policy makers; property insurance professionals; federal, local, and state governments; and others concerned with natural disaster prevention and preparedness will find this book of interest.
