Download or read book Le Corbusier & Pierre Jeanneret - Restoration of the Clarté Building, Geneva written by Office du patrimoine et des sites and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2016-10-24 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book describes the story of Clarté, Le Corbusier’s first apartment building, continuing the narrative into the 21st century. The steel skeleton building completed in Geneva in 1930/1932 is a prototype of the Moderne style and a precursor of the Unité d’Habitation. The building was neglected for many decades and not listed as a historic building until the 1990s. In 2007 the external envelope was repaired as the first step, followed by refurbishment of the interior, in which building preservation requirements were taken into account in an exemplary manner. The building log book by the architects and structural engineers is illustrated with numerous new and historic drawings and photographs, and has been supplemented with an account of the building’s history. The renovated building is presented in large photographs.

Book Synopsis Architecture du canton de Vaud by : Bruno Marchand
Download or read book Architecture du canton de Vaud written by Bruno Marchand and published by EPFL Press. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book is focused on the intersection between urban brownfields and the sustainability transitions of metreopolitan areas, cities and neighbourhoods. It provides both a theoretical and practical approach to the topic, offering a thorough introduction to urban brownfields and regeneration projects as well as an operational monitoring tool. Neighbourhoods in Transition begins with an overview of historic urban development and strategic areas in the hearts of towns to be developed. It then defines several key issues related to the topic, including urban brownfields, regeneration projects, and sustainability issues related to neighbourhood development. The second part of this book is focused on support tools, explaining the challenges faced, the steps involved in a regeneration process, and offering an operational monitoring tool. It applies the unique tool to case studies in three selected neighbourhoods and the outcomes of one case study are also presented and discussed, highlighting its benefits. The audience for this book will be both professional and academic. It will support researchers as an up-to-date reference book on urban brownfield regeneration projects, and also the work of architects, urban designers, urban planners and engineers involved in sustainability transitions of the built environment.
Download or read book The Guide written by Kathleen A. Turitto and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2016-08-31 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kathleen A. Turitto is in her late sixties when she tries something new: taking French classes at Palomar College in San Marcos, California. Under the guidance of Professor Ray Adams, she learns to read and even understand conversational French. She is feeling confident when she sees a notice on a classroom bulletin board that reads: Enroll at the Sorbonne. One month$999 including meals, lodgings, excursions, and air fare from Los Angeles. As someone who is always looking for a bargain, she jumps at the chancenaively thinking that if she can read and understand French, she can easily learn to speak it. In this memoir, she looks back at her journey to France, and how once there, she navigated taking exams, finding her way through Paris, networking with students, and conquering her fears. Along the way, she meets people shell never forget, including an Australian named Paula Burk, who she runs into by happenstance at a cafeteria. Soon, the two women are enjoying each others company over coffee, meals, and warm conversation. If youve ever felt too timid to try something new or embark on an adventure by yourself, then youll be emboldened by these recollections.
Book Synopsis Women, Modernity, and Landscape Architecture by : Sonja Dümpelmann
Download or read book Women, Modernity, and Landscape Architecture written by Sonja Dümpelmann and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-02-11 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modernity was critically important to the formation and evolution of landscape architecture, yet its histories in the discipline are still being written. This book looks closely at the work and influences of some of the least studied figures of the era: established and less well-known female landscape architects who pursued modernist ideals in their designs. The women discussed in this volume belong to the pioneering first two generations of professional landscape architects and were outstanding in the field. They not only developed notable practices but some also became leaders in landscape architectural education as the first professors in the discipline, or prolific lecturers and authors. As early professionals who navigated the world of a male-dominated intellectual and menial work force they were exponents of modernity. In addition, many personalities discussed in this volume were either figures of transition between tradition and modernism (like Silvia Crowe, Maria Teresa Parpagliolo), or they fully embraced and furthered the modernist agenda (like Rosa Kliass, Cornelia Oberlander). The chapters offer new perspectives and contribute to the development of a more balanced and integrated landscape architectural historiography of the twentieth century. Contributions come from practitioners and academics who discuss women based in USA, Canada, Brazil, New Zealand, South Africa, the former USSR, Sweden, Britain, Germany, Austria, France and Italy. Ideal reading for those studying landscape history, women’s studies and cultural geography.
