Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attracting over fifteen million visitors, the 1925 Paris Expo had an ambitious goal to create a new modernist style which would reflect the great scientific, industrial, and technological advances that produced a new spirit known as "modern." In April in Paris, author Irena R. Makaryk explores the theatre arts’ vital cultural and political impact at this celebrated international exhibition. Drawing extensively from unexplored archival documents from France, Austria, and North America, April in Paris is the first major study to focus on theatre arts at the 1925 Paris Expo and the audacious Soviet contributions to this fair. Turning a spotlight on the uses and representations of theatricalized spaces, Makaryk analyses their political challenge at a time when relations between the West and the USSR were rife with tension. Copiously illustrated with beautiful colour and black and white illustrations, this book elucidates the complex role of the international fair as a catalyst for spirited cultural debate and for aesthetic change.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The international exhibitions held around the world between 1851 and 1939 were spectacular gestures, which briefly held the attention of the world before disappearing into an abrupt oblivion, of the victims of their planned temporality. Known in Britain as Great Exhibitions, in France as Expositions Universelles and in America as World's Fairs, the genre became a self-perpetuating phenomenon, the extraordinary cultural spawn of industry and empire. Thoroughly in the spirit of the first industrial age, the exhibitions illustrated the relation between money and power, and revelled in the belief that the uncontrolled expression of that power was the quintessence of freedom. Philanthropy found its place on exhibition sites functioning as a conscience to the age although even here morality was inextricably linked to economic efficiency and expansion. Imperial achievement was celebrated to the full at international exhibitions. Nevertheless, most World's Fairs maintained an imperial element and out of this blossomed a vibrant racism. Between 1889 and 1914, the exhibitions became a human showcase, when people from all over the world were brought to sites in order to be seen by others for their gratification and education. In essence, the English national profile fabricated in the closing decades of the nineteenth century was derived from the pre-industrial world. The Fine Arts were an important ingredient in any international exhibition of calibre. This book incorporates comparative work on European and American empire-building, with the chronological focus primarily on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, when these cultural exchanges were most powerfully at work.

Download or read book Art Deco written by Victor Arwas and published by New York : Abrams. This book was released on 1980 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Art Deco was a major decorative style of the 1920s - the perfect expression of the extravagance of Paris during that decade. Renowned for its opulence and exclusiveness, Art Deco embraced every area of the decorative arts, including furniture, jewelry, painting and graphics, bookbinding, glass, and ceramics, and was the last coherent decorative style to emerge from Europe during this century. The 1925 Exposition des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Moderne, from which the style took its name, united the work of the finest French artists in a dazzling display of luxury. Its creators were primarily painters and sculptors who employed highly skilled craftsmen to execute their designs in rare and exotic materials such as figured woods, precious tones and metals, glass and ivory, favoring strong and vibrant colors. This book offers a broad insight into the splendor of this most lavish of decorative styles, as seen in the work of its leading French exponents. Their elegant creations are brought together in this handsome and profusely illustrated volume, which includes much material not previously published. The author's intimate knowledge of many private collections around the world enables him to share a privileged insight into the finest hand-craftsmanship of the time. Also discussed are important Art Deco themes, including the animalier tradition and the cult of the beautiful sophisticated woman. In addition there is a special section of biographies of more than 120 artists.
