This book was released on 2011 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exposure to solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is an occupational health and safety issue for outdoor occupations, since excessive exposure is associated with negative health outcomes, including eye conditions, and skin cancers. In this study, electronic dosimeters were used to record time-stamped UVR exposure of a convenience sample of 77 workers from three occupations: building, horticulture, and roading, selected from listings in Central Otago yellow pages directories. Workers kept a diary record of concurrent sun-protective practices and completed a questionnaire on sun-related knowledge, attitudes towards suntans, and perceptions of workplace socio-cultural environment. The two outcomes were UVR exposure and sun-protective practices.Using the Haddon Matrix and Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion to structure and guide the research, variables potentially associated with the outcomes were considered from the host (worker) and the socio-cultural environment (workplace) domains. Host factors included (1) sun and skin cancer related knowledge, (2) attitudes towards suntans, and (3) perceived risk of skin cancer..

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Worldwide, skin cancer is the most diagnosed cancer, with one in three cancers being a skin cancer. For outdoor workers, prolonged sun exposure is an important workplace hazard that can cause skin cancer and heat stress, both of which are largely preventable. However, outdoor workers are regularly over-exposed to the sun, often exceeding the recognized exposure limits by many times. They are also often not well protected. As implementing effective sun safety measures is challenging, this Guide, along with its supporting resources, will help workplaces better protect their outdoor workers. This Guide provides a step-by-step process to develop a Sun Safety Program that is designed to complement existing safety practices and be embedded within a workplace's occupational health and safety management system.

This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 20th century, tanned skin was associated with good health. However, people began to protect themselves against potential overexposure to avoid sunburns. Around 1945, the first sunscreen products became available. In the years to follow, a vast number of different sunscreen filters and frameworks regulating filter substances and preparations, and methods characterizing sunscreen products were developed. The perception regarding the tasks of sunscreen products changed several times – initially it was promoted as a lifestyle product, then as a skin cancer preventive means, and more recently also for anti-aging. Different purposes and the widespread use of these products have led to myriad studies and a wealth of information. In this volume, the editors present a current collection of information analyzing and discussing issues related to sunscreen products and their use. These include challenges regarding the ideal sunscreen product including filter selection and formulation issues, measurement methods, performance characterization, safety, and regulatory issues. Further papers address topics related to the use of sunscreen products in everyday life, in vulnerable cohorts and outdoor workers. Controversial topics such as environmental effects of sunscreen products and the risks and benefits of UV radiation in the context of skin cancer, vitamin D and cardiovascular and metabolic health are also covered.
Book Synopsis Non-ionizing Radiation Protection by : Andrew W. Wood
Download or read book Non-ionizing Radiation Protection written by Andrew W. Wood and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-04-05 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive review of non-ionizing radiation and its public health and environmental risks, for researchers, policy makers, and laymen This book explains the characteristics of all forms of electromagnetic non-ionizing radiation (NIR) and analyzes the relationship between exposure and its biological effects, as well as the known dose-response relationships associated with each. Taking a uniquely holistic approach to the concept of health that builds upon the WHO definition to include not only absence of disease, but the physical, mental and social well-being of individuals and the population, it reviews established and potential risks and protections, along with regulatory issues associated with each. The risks to public health of NIR, whether in the form of UV light, radio waves from wireless devices, or electric and magnetic fields associated with electrical power systems, is currently a cause of great concern among members of the public and lawmakers. But in order to separate established science from speculation and make informed decisions about how to mitigate the risks of NIR and allocate precious resources, policymakers, manufacturers, and individuals need a comprehensive source of up-to-date information based on the current scientific evidence. Written by a team of experts in their fields, this book is that source. Among other things, it: Summarizes scientific findings on the safety of different forms of NIR and the rationale behind current standards Describes devices for monitoring NIR along with the established and potential hazards of each form Explores proper protections against UV light and lasers, RF radiation, ELF fields and other forms of NIR Discusses how to avoid injuries through occupational training or public awareness programs, and how to perform medical assessments in cases of suspected NIR injuries Considers how to decide whether or not to spend money on certain mitigation measures, based on cost-benefit analyses Offering expert reviews and analyses of the latest scientific findings and public policy issues concerning the risks to public health and the environment of NIR, Non-ionizing Radiation Protection is an indispensable source of information for manufacturers, government regulators, and regulatory agencies, as well as researchers, concerned laypersons, and students.
