Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document presents the harmonized guidance for the conduct of terrestrial field studies of conventional pesticide dissipation to satisfy the Pest Management Regulatory Agency's environmental chemistry and fate date requirements. This harmonized guidance was developed jointly with the United States Environmental Protection Agency under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) Technical Working Group on Pesticides. It builds upon the guidance published in Trade Memorandum T-1-255, Environmental Chemistry and Fate Guidelines for Registration of Pesticides in Canada. The guidance document, entitled NAFTA Guidance Document for Conducting Terrestrial Field Dissipation Studies, represents the field dissipation studies which are conducted to demonstrate the transformation, transport and fate of pesticides under representative actual use conditions. The objective of this document is to help ensure that TFD studies are conducted in a manner that will provide risk assessors and risk managers with more confidence in the data generated and with a better understanding of the assumptions and limitations of the data and estimated half-lives of the chemical.

Book excerpt: Terrestrial Field Dissipation Studies: Purpose, Design, and Interpretation discusses the design, conduct, and interpretation of terrestrial field dissipation studies. Field studies provide information on the effects of agricultural chemicals in the environment. Field studies differ from laboratory studies because they study the effects of active ingredients in soil and/or water under actual field conditions as opposed to a controlled environment in the laboratory. Terrestrial Field Dissipation Studies: Purpose, Design, and Interpretation includes analytical method requirements, examples of modeling pesticide dissipation, and summaries of regulatory guidelines, such as the EPA/PMRA proposed guidance in 1998.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accurate risk assessment is critical to pesticide regulation. This authoritative reference provides an exhaustive evaluation of current agrochemical environmental fate studies, a critical review of current EPA pesticide assessment guidelines, and a wide variety of environmental simulation models. Divided into four sections, this well-organized book provides a wealth of data and information vital to anyone involved in environmental exposure assessment, groundwater, surface water, and water contamination, pesticide regulation, and environmental simulation modeling. At your fingertips, you will have the latest information on the development of meaningful environmental fate data and how this information will result in accurate assessment of potential environmental and human hazards. The inadequacy of current regulatory guidelines and the resulting nonscientific assessment of agrochemical environmental fate are discussed in detail. A wide variety of environmental fate studies are included to demonstrate the current use of data to assess environmental fate and potential hazards associated with agrochemical use. Finally, ten chapters discuss the use of computer models that have been developed for analyzing and integrating data from a variety of environmental fate studies on agrochemicals used under various field conditions.

Book excerpt: At the heart of environmental protection is risk assessment: thelikelihood of pollution from accidents; the likelihood of problemsfrom normal and abnormal operation of industrial processes; thelikely impacts associated with new synthetic chemicals; and so on.Currently, risk assessment has been very much in the news--therisks from BSE and E. coli, and the public perception of risks fromnuclear waste, etc. This new publication explains how scientificmethodologies are used to assess risk from human activities and theresultant objects and wastes, on people and the environment.Understanding such risks supplies crucial information--to framelegislation, manage major habitats, businesses and industries, andcreate development programmes. Unique in combining the science of risk assessment with thedevelopment of management strategies. Covers science and social science (politics, economics, psychology) aspects. Very timely - risk assessment lies at the heart of decisionmaking in various topical environmental questions (BSE, Brent Spar, nuclear waste).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human and Ecological Risk Assessment: Theory and Practice assembles the expertise of more than fifty authorities from fifteen different fields, forming a comprehensive reference and textbook on risk assessment. Containing two dozen case studies of environmental or human health risk assessments, the text not only presents the theoretical underpinnings of the discipline, but also serves as a complete handbook and "how-to" guide for individuals conducting or interpreting risk assessments. In addition, more than 4,000 published papers and books in the field are cited. Editor Dennis Paustenbach has assembled chapters that present the most current methods for conducting hazard identification, dose-response and exposure assessment, and risk characterization components for risk assessments of any chemical hazard to humans or wildlife (fish, birds, and terrestrials). Topics addressed include hazards posed by: Air emissions Radiological hazards Contaminated soil and foods Agricultural hazards Occupational hazards Consumer products and water Hazardous waste sites Contaminated air and water The bringing together of so many of the world's authorities on these topics, plus the comprehensive nature of the text, promises to make Human and Ecological Risk Assessment the text against which others will be measured in the coming years.
