Hasta la fecha de su publicación, no existía en lengua castellana ningún libro que diera a conocer la gran mayoría de los árboles que se pueden encontrar, tanto cultivados como de forma espontánea, y la información suficiente para poder identificarlos. Vino a satisfacer, por tanto, una demanda sentida desde hacía muchos años por los amantes de los árboles, que afortunadamente son legión en nuestro país. Prueba de ello ha sido la buena acogida que ha tenido la primera edición, siendo como es un libro científico-técnico, pues aparecido en el año 1999, en algo más de un año se ha preparado una segunda edición, lo que supone un gran éxito para libros de este tipo. La primera edición recogía una recopilación de los árboles presentes en España hasta el año 1998, de los que los autores tenían conocimiento, bien por la observación directa (su inmensa mayoría), bien por informaciones fidedignas, incluyéndose unas 1.650 especies arbóreas y arborescentes. Ya se indicaba que era muy difícil asegurar que se incluían todos los árboles existentes en un territorio tan extenso y variado como es el español, y desde la salida de la primera edición se ha seguido trabajando en el tema, recogiéndose nueva información y algunas aportaciones de amables lectores. El momento actual es muy importante para la dendrología española con la introducción constante de nuevas especies en la jardinería ornamental, favorecida por un mercado mundial de viveros y, más importante aún, con la creación de una serie de arboretos especializados y el aumento de la riqueza vegetal de algunos jardines botánicos y colecciones. En esta edición se ha añadido una Addenda que incluye más de 300 nuevas especies arbóreas o arborescentes, indicando la familia a que pertenecen, su procedencia y el lugar donde se localizan. También la presente edición se ha revisado, se ha mejorado con la modificación y corrección de algunas informaciones, que han supuesto un apreciable enriquecimiento de la anterior publicación. Confiamos que esta nueva edición tenga tan buena aceptación como tuvo la anterior, y eso permita avanzar en el conocimiento de nuestro patrimonio arbóreo, abriendo el camino para nuevas ediciones que contengan las nuevas introducciones de árboles en España.
