Mediante una metodologia normalizada, el Grupo de Trabajo evaluo la efectividad de diversas intervenciones preventivas y establecio normas para la practica clinica basadas en pruebas cientificas procedentes de investigaciones medicas publicadas. En la primera parte del libro se exponen la funcion de las normas en la prevencion clinica y en la promocion de la salud, la metodologia empleada por el Grupo para valorar la efectividad de las intervenciones y la necesidad de contar con guias practicas. Se incluye tambien un cuadro que resume las recomendaciones seleccionadas. En la segunda parte se examinan temas que abarcan desde la prevencion de distantas lesiones y de las enfermedades causadas por el tabaco, la deteccion de diversas clases de cancer, de la hipertension, de la obesidad y de la diabetes mellitus, hasta el asesoramiento sobre nutricion y actividad fisica. En suma, se trata de una guia practica que ayudara a todos los profesionales de salud, asociaciones y a los responsables de la planificacion de los servicios de salud a la hora de tomar decisiones sobre la inclusion o exclusion, el contenido y la frecuencia de una amplia gama de intervenciones preventivas en materias de salud.
