Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stories Old and New is the first complete translation of Feng Menglong’s Gujin xiaoshuo (also known as Yushi mingyan, Illustrious Words to Instruct the World), a collection of 40 short stories first published in 1620 in China. This is considered the best of Feng’s three such collections and was a pivotal work in the development of vernacular fiction. The stories are valuable as examples of early fiction and for their detailed depiction of daily life among a broad range of social classes. The stories are populated by scholars and courtesans, spirits and ghosts, Buddhist monks and nuns, pirates and emperors, and officials both virtuous and corrupt. The streets and abodes of late-Ming China come alive in Shuhui Yang and Yunqin Yang’s smooth and colorful translation of these entertaining tales. Stories Old and New has long been popular in China and has been published there in numerous editions. Although some of the stories have appeared in English translations in journals and anthologies, they have not previously been presented sequentially in thematic pairs as arranged by Feng Menglong. This unabridged translation, illustrated with a selection of woodcuts from the original Ming dynasty edition and including Feng’s interlinear notes and marginal comments, as well as all of the verse woven throughout the text, allows the modern reader to experience the text as did its first audience nearly four centuries ago. Book excerpt: The first of its kind in English, this anthology translates twenty-two popular Chinese plays published between 1919 and 2000, accompanied by a critical introduction to the historical, cultural, and aesthetic evolution of twentieth-century Chinese spoken drama. Primarily comprising works from the People's Republic of China, though including representative plays from Hong Kong and Taiwan, this collection not only showcases the revolutionary rethinking of Chinese theater and performance that began in the late Qing dynasty. It also highlights the formation of Chinese national and gender identities during a period of tremendous social and political change, along with the genesis of contemporary attitudes toward the West. Early twentieth-century Chinese drama embodies the uncertainty and anxiety brought on by modernism, socialism, political conflict, and war. After 1949, PRC theater painted a complex portrait of the rise of communism in China, with the ideals of Chinese socialism juxtaposed against the sacrifices made for a new society. The Cultural Revolution promoted a "model theater" cultivated from the achievements of earlier, leftist spoken drama, even though this theater arose from the destruction of old culture. Post-Mao drama addresses the socialist legacy and the attempts of a wounded nation to reexamine its cultural roots. Taiwan's spoken drama synthesizes regional and foreign traditions, and Hong Kong's spoken drama sparkles as a hybrid of Chinese and Western influences. Immensely valuable for cross-disciplinary, comparative, and performance study, this anthology provides essential perspective on China's theatricality and representation of political life.

Book excerpt: The most important thing about the calculation of 紫微斗数 (Zǐ Wēi Dòu Shù) is the role of the 4 transformation stars called 四化曜 Sì Huà Yào, which becomes the elements of transformation of the main stars according to the passage of time. The transformation that occurs are colouring the dynamics of an individual's life based on the calculation of heavenly stem that mark the dimension of time from decade to decade, and year to year. The calculation of 紫微斗数 (Zǐ Wēi Dòu Shù) is easier to understand as it does not involve complex interpretations of the interactions between elements as is done in the Bazi calculation. The interpretation shown on the life chart is blunt or direct. First published in 2010, the Indonesian version of this book has becomes one of the best-sellers of its time. Years later, with the encouragement of the public, Feng Shui-loving friends, and clients, the Zǐ Wēi Dòu Shù book was re-published with a revised material for a more complete content and has finally been published in an English version. "This book is organized like an encyclopedia so that readers can look up the interpretations directly after knowing their 明盤 Míng Pán (Map of Life). In order to keep the information up-to-date, this book has been revised with the most obvious addition being the interpretations and meanings of the main stars which changes due to the 4 四化曜 Sì Huà Yào in each star. Hopefully this book can add insight, and improve the quality of life of its readers by achieving more luck and happiness, also by avoiding bad or unlucky influences by anticipating them in advance."

Book excerpt: A supernatural thriller set in ANTARCTICA A woman running from her magic. A man who’s given up. Mutant culture colonies. A doomed ship. After violent, out of control magic killed her sister and drove her father mad, Kayna Quan ran as far and as fast as she could from the mixture of Chinese and Celtic power boiling through her blood. Fresh out of residency, she opts for a tour in Antarctica. Money is short, so she hires on as medical officer aboard a Russian research vessel headed for McMurdo Station. Brynn McMichaels’ stint on remote South Georgia Island is a fancy, probably overplayed, escape from a crappy breakup. He may have left an irate woman behind, but he could have picked somewhere closer to get away. When cultures of the single-celled organism, archaea, begin shifting into another form, overgrowing the bins in his lab, he’s convinced the isolation got to him until a call from an old buddy at McMurdo reveals a similar phenomenon. Intrigued, Brynn agrees to lend a hand. The weather’s too uncertain to send a plane, so he hitches a ride aboard Kayna’s ship, bringing his mutant culture colonies with him. And that’s only the beginning… PRAISE FOR ICY PASSAGE: With a seamless blend of science and the paranormal, this book captivates you right from the start. 5-stars!
