Book excerpt: Ask teachers why they have pursued a career in education and they are likely to mention a strong desire to make a difference in the lives of children or suggest that teaching was a calling not just a job. Research shows that in addition to these reasons, teachers also indicated that they joined the academic ranks to share a deep interest in a particular subject area, to work with students of different backgrounds and abilities, or to engage students in creative ways. For these reasons, and many more, Guardians of the Next Generation: Igniting the Passion for High Quality Teaching, addresses the very heart of what helps teachers to make learning meaningful to children.

Even though he was twelve years older than she was and happened to be a new prospect in the MC her father was an enforcer for, the Rebel Guardians. Despite her best efforts, he never noticed or paid any attention to her, not even as she got older. Now a young adult, she's still in love with him, only she's tired of his lame excuses. Determined to move on with her life, she begins dating Marcus Welch, but she soon realizes that what she thought about him is, in fact, untrue. Jaxson Boone hasn't had an easy life, until he found the Rebel Guardians MC. While he's always noticed Ralynn, it was as a child, since she was so much younger than him. As she grows into a beautiful, headstrong young woman, he does whatever he can to stop his attraction towards her, convinced that he's no good. He will stay away from her, not only out of respect for his brother, but because he can bring her nothing but heartache. All of Jaxson's self-made promises go out the window when he witnesses something that raises his blood pressure beyond the boiling point. Realizing that the one woman he has been pushing away is the one he needs to make his life whole, he now has to work to show Ralynn just what she means to him.**This book is for mature audiences ages 18+ due to language, violence and sexual content**

Book excerpt: This collection is the first to offer a close study of fan generations, which are defined not only by fans’ ages, but by their entry point into a canon or their personal politics. The contributors further the conversation about how generational fandom is influenced by and, in turn, influences technologies, industry practices, and social and political changes. As reboot culture continues, as franchises continue expanding over time, and as new technologies enable easier access to older media, Fandom, the Next Generation offers a necessary investigation into transgenerational fandoms and intergenerational fan relationships. Book excerpt: Social Studies - The Next Generation broadens the imagination within social studies education by highlighting current, cutting-edge scholarship incorporating critical discourses. Drawing on postmodern, poststructural, postcolonial, and feminist theories often borrowed from cultural studies, curriculum theory, critical geography, women's studies, and queer studies, the scholars contributing to this volume ask new questions about social studies, use different methodologies to study the field, and report findings with new forms of textualization. This book is dialogic and even conversational, ending with provocative responses from established social studies scholars and the editors and disturbs the given and the taken for granted in social studies research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fact: Wellness programs benefit the bottom line. Motorola, for example, found that each dollar invested in wellness benefits returned $3.93 in health and disability cost savings. Next-Generation Wellness at Work tells how to get in on the action. A nuts-and-bolts, how-to guide for managers, it delivers the latest thinking on how to take full advantage of the benefits that wellness programs can offer both employees and companies. And the effort couldn't be more important. With the soaring cost of medical care and the increase in obesity and lifestyle-related illnesses, there is growing recognition that companies must build a culture of health and enable employees to become better guardians of their own well being. This book illustrates, in detail, exactly how to accomplish those goals. Good health saves in ways that go beyond smaller insurance premiums. It also has a direct relationship with employee productivity, making wellness a matter of high-level strategy. However, many workplace wellness programs are not as effective as they could be. They are not comprehensive, not long-term, and not marketed to the people who could benefit most. Wellness expert Stephenie Overman helps managers take practical steps to overcome these deficiencies and build successful workplace wellness programs that result in tangible, bottom-line benefits for organizations. And the book starts from the ground up, first by explaining how to take a company's temperature, get management buy-in, and design a program that fits a company's unique needs and situation. Building a program is one thing, but will they come? That's where Overman's expertise is essential: She shows how to motivate workers to take advantage of the program and reap its many benefits. And she explains how to partner with local health providers and integrate methods to promote psychological well being, two key ingredients for success. Not many corporate programs benefit both employees and the company equally, but a well-planned wellness initiative will boost the health and productivity of employees, leading to a happier—and more competitive—workplace.

Book excerpt: The official parody guide to the unaired eighth season of Star Trek: The Next Generation, based on the popular @TNG_S8 Twitter account from creator Mike McMahan! In the basement of the Star Trek archives, behind shelves of U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D models, bags of wigs, and bins of plastic phasers, sits a dusty cardboard box. Inside is a pile of VHS tapes that contain never-before-seen episodes and behind-the-scenes footage for something truly amazing. The world thinks there are only seven seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation, but there’s one more. A secret season. Actually, not really. But that didn’t stop Mike McMahan, creator of the parody Twitter account @TNG_S8, from making a guide full of: REAL* TNG SEASON 8 FACTS AND STORIES! REAL* TNG SEASON 8 DIALOGUE AND IMAGES! (* Again, not really, of course. This is humor. Sorry.) So impress your friends and bewilder your enemies with your newfound knowledge of these very lost Star Trek episodes! Enterprise(TM) " search feverishly for the missing crewmen, Data and LaForge discover they are in a station almost identical to the one they were exploring, high in orbit around an earth-type world. Years before, the occupants of that planet accidentally stumbled onto the ship and its advanced technology -- and since then have used its weapons to keep the nations on the planet below disarmed, and at peace. Now their own arrival has precipitated a crisis on the station. Somehow, data and LaForge must find a way to restore trust between the planet below and the station's guardians up above -- before a final, destructive war breaks out!

Book excerpt: This is the first book monograph devoted to Anglophone Ukrainian Canadian children’s historical fiction published between 1991 and 2021. It consists of five chapters offering cross-sectional and interdisciplinary readings of 41 books – novels, novellas, picturebooks, short stories, and a graphic novel. The first three chapters focus on texts about the complex process of becoming Ukrainian Canadian, showcasing the experiences of the first two waves of Ukrainian immigration to Canada, including encounters with Indigenous Peoples and the First World War Internment. The last two chapters are devoted to the significance of the cultural memory of the Holodomor, the Great Famine of 1932-1933, and the Second World War for Ukrainian Canadians. All the chapters demonstrate the entanglements of Ukrainian and Canadian history and point to the role Anglophone children’s literature can play in preventing the symbolical seeds of memory from withering. This volume argues that reading, imagining, and reimagining history can lead to the formation of beyond-textual next-generation memory. Such memory created through reading is multidimensional as it involves the interpretation of both the present and the past by an individual whose reality has been directly or indirectly shaped by the past over which they have no influence. Next-generation memory is of anticipatory character, which means that authors of historical fiction anticipate the readers – both present-day and future – not to have direct links to any witnesses of the events they discuss and to have little knowledge of the transcultural character of the Ukrainian Canadian diaspora.
