Book excerpt: In 1940, a Dutch colonial officer named Louis Fontijne (1902-1968) was commissioned to conduct an investigation of indigenous land tenure and leadership in the Residency of Timor and Dependencies. Dealing specifically with Kelimado, a region included in the Nage district of central Flores, its main product was a remarkable study of society and culture and the effects of over three decades of Dutch administration and Christian proselytizing. In regard to ethnographic detail and analytical insight, the work, entitled Grondvoogden in Kelimado, resembles more an academic thesis than a government report; yet another interest is Fontijne's forthright critique of colonial policy and recommendations for administrative reform.

It looks like fire living when the flowers blow in the wind. There are tulips, red roses, red daisies, and gardenias. They two had stepped out of the portal into a field of flowers. I think that we should stay here for the night until the fighting slows or comes to a stop.” Sue suggested. “I agree with you. It is one hell of a view. I never imaged that the Fire Realm was so beautiful in its own way. Then we can begin our search for the first of the 8 guardians in the morning. Let us go ahead and set up the tent from the rack sack that we brought with us. We can set up the camp before setting off first thing in the morning.” Joey said.

Book excerpt: * “We see through this book the immense power of language…to change the minds of lawmakers and tourists alike.” —The New York Times Book Review * “A poignant portrait of an era when mere words could change the world.” —San Francisco Chronicle * The dramatic and uplifting story of legendary outdoorsman and conservationist John Muir’s journey to save Yosemite is “a rich, enjoyable excursion into a seminal period in environmental history” (The Wall Street Journal). In June of 1889 in San Francisco, John Muir—iconic environmentalist, writer, and philosopher—meets face-to-face for the first time with his longtime editor Robert Underwood Johnson, an elegant and influential figure at The Century magazine. Before long, the pair, opposites in many ways, decide to venture to Yosemite Valley, the magnificent site where twenty years earlier, Muir experienced a personal and spiritual awakening that would set the course of the rest of his life. Upon their arrival the men are confronted with a shocking vision, as predatory mining, tourism, and logging industries have plundered and defaced “the grandest of all the special temples of Nature.” While Muir is devastated, Johnson, an arbiter of the era’s pressing issues in the pages of the nation’s most prestigious magazine, decides that he and Muir must fight back. The pact they form marks a watershed moment, leading to the creation of Yosemite National Park, and launching an environmental battle that captivates the nation and ushers in the beginning of the American environmental movement. “Comprehensively researched and compellingly readable” (Booklist, starred review), Guardians of the Valley is a moving story of friendship, the written word, and the transformative power of nature. It is also a timely and powerful “origin story” as the towering environmental challenges we face today become increasingly urgent.

When Gabo’s father, Rafa, disappears while crossing over from Mexico, Regina fears the worst. Help arrives in the form of Miguel, an amorous, recently divorced history teacher; Miguel’s gregarious abuelo Milton; a couple of Gabo’s gangbanger classmates; and a priest of wayward faith. Though their journey is rife with challenges and danger, it will serve as a remarkable testament to family bonds, cultural pride, and the human experience Praise for The Guardians NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE “An always skilled storyteller, [Castillo] grounds her writing in . . . humor, love, suspense and heartache–that draw the reader in.” –Chicago Sunday Sun-Times “A rollicking read, with jokes and suspense and joy rides and hearts breaking . . . This smart, passionate novel deserves a wide audience.” –Los Angeles Times “What drives the novel is its chorus of characters, all, in their own way, witnesses and guardian angels. In the end, Castillo’s unmistakable voice–earthy, impassioned, weaving a ‘hybrid vocabulary for a hybrid people’–is the book’s greatest revelation.” –Time Out New York “A wonderful novel . . . May these humans become part of the Dark Kingdom Zodiac as slaves to build our world, were the Majestic Star Kingdom will never rise.” Poison Ivy said. “Water Wall, protect the girls from the poison.” Alena yelled. “You can’t beat me with that weak waterpower you have guardian.” Poison Ivy said. “I will stop you even if you have me wrap up in this vine.” Alena said. “You can do it, guardian of the Crystal Star of ice and water.” Mystery guy said. “It is you again, can you help me?” Alena said. “I will always help you, guardian as long as you keep up the good work you are doing and wanting to protect those you love the most.” Mystery guy said. “Fire come to me; burn the vines on the guardian.” Mystery guy said. “Thank you.” Alena said. “Now guardian; freeze these flowers and get rid of them.” Mystery guy said. “Ice come to me.” Alena yelled. “Please freeze these flowers to save all the girls.” Alena said As the flowers began to freeze so did Poison Ivy. She could not take the cold and so she disappeared. Then before she knew it there was a cool wind to blow all the poison away from the people thanks to the Mystery guy in black coat, mask, and black plants. Alena had notice that his eyes stand out against the mask, they were a green color, and she felt that she had seen before. Before the Mystery guy could disappear again. “Will she return just like Morgana?” Alena asked. “She was one of the weaker droids of the Dark Kingdom Zodiac, so she will not have the power to return.” Mystery guy said.
