In the past two years there have been over 2000 published articles with the names of these compounds in the title. One can go to any nutrition or health food store and buy these as supplements because it is believed they improve health and athletic performance. This volume includes an up to date summary of the scientific and clinical aspects of essentially all the biologically active Guanidino Compounds. The articles summarize the current scientific knowledge of these compounds with reference to relevant clinical conditions, and discuss the chemical, biological, and clinical functions of these compounds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1978, we had the first research meeting of guanidine compound analysis in Okayama, Japan. The purpose of the meeting was to standardize the methods of analyzing guanidino compounds, because the analytic methods, even, for example, that of normal plasma, were quite different from laboratory to laboratory at that time. More than ten laboratories joined in this research project. Thereafter, the purpose of the annual meetings was extended to cover general biochemistry of guanidino compounds, and every meeting has served to promote our mutual growth and progress. The last meeting of the Japan Guanidino Compounds Research Association in 1982 brought together more than 80 members, and about 30 papers were presented there. This, the 6th annual meeting, brings the International Symposium on Guani dino Compounds here to Tokyo. Recently, many scientists are engaged in the research of guanidine compounds, especially in the field of clinical bio chemistry. I am sure that the observation of guanidinosuccinic acid in the urine of uremic patients by Dr. Cohen's research group in 1963 ignited the recent exploration of the role of guanidino compounds in renal diseases. The study of guanidino compounds does, however, have a long history. The first knowledge of guanidine was obtained by Strecker in 1861 (Annalen der Chemie und Pharmacie, 118, 151- 177, 1981).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guanidine is named for its similarity to the purine guanine which, in turn, is named for its principal source guano, which comes from the Inca word, huano, for dung. Guanidine, therefore, translates into dung-like, which is hardly a genteel way to introduce a subject. On the other hand, texts are seldom inspirational, "frequently crude and rarely literary and should be judged on how successfully they assemble, organize and present current data. I am impressed that the material which fol]ows goes a long way toward successfully achieving those goals. Tue International Guanidine Society is a synthesis of three groups of investigators: biologists studying guanidines as phosphagens, neurologists interested in guanidines as convulsants and nephrologists involved with guanidines as toxins. As a member of the latter group. I am gratified by the considerable progress this book represents. To begin with. there now appears to be a common theme which unifies current speculation concerning the metabolic origin of the guanidines in uremia. At the First International Congress in 1983, evidence was presented which supported the theory that certain guanidines were products of the mixed function oxidation of urea. This year's meeting brings together overwhelming data showing that methyl guanidine is an effect of active oxygen reacting with creatinine. An idolatry, worshipped throughout biochemistry, that urea and creatinine are inert byproducts of protein metabolism, is shown to have feet of clay.

Book excerpt: Reviews all the latest basic and clinical research findings With contributions from leading international experts in the field, this book is dedicated to all facets of uremic toxins research, including low molecular weight solutes, protein-bound solutes, and middle molecules. Moreover, it covers everything from basic mass spectrometry research to the latest clinical findings and practices. Uremic Toxins is divided into three sections: Section One, Uremic Toxins, explores the definition, classification, listing, and mass spectrometric analysis of uremic toxins Section Two, Selected Uremic Toxins, describes key uremic toxins, explaining chemical structures, metabolism, analytical methods, plasma levels, toxicity, clinical implications, and removal methods. Among the uremic toxins covered are indoxyl sulfate, asymmetric dimethylarginine, PTH, ß2-microglobulin, and AGEs Section Three, Therapeutic Removal of Uremic Toxins, describes how uremic toxins can be removed by hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and oral sorbent All chapters are based on the authors' thorough review of the literature as well as their own personal laboratory and clinical experience. References at the end of each chapter provide a gateway to the literature in the field. Reviewing all the latest basic and clinical research findings, Uremic Toxins will help bench scientists in nephrology advance their own investigations. It will also help clinicians take advantage of the latest tested and proven treatments for the management of chronic kidney disease.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molecular Nutrition and Mitochondria: Metabolic Deficits, Whole-Diet Interventions, and Targeted Nutraceuticals provides a comprehensive examination of molecular aspects of mitochondrial nutrition and how dietary compounds might impact the treatment of mitochondrial dysfunction. Beginning with an overview of the fundamentals of mitochondria physiology and the methods used to evaluate mitochondrial imbalance in clinical practice, the book goes on to outline nutritional shortfalls in mitochondrial dysfunction and highlights the complex intra-organelle milieu affecting interactions between food compounds and mitochondrial co-factors, metabolites, and signaling molecules. Further sections explore the impact of essential nutrients, such as vitamin E, fatty acids, and complex lipids, on mitochondrial biogenesis, as well as non-essential bioactive compounds originating from food that can be evaluated for their mitochondria-modulating potential, such as mitochondria-targeted small molecule antioxidants, plant-based pigments and organic compounds, nucleotides, non-proteogenic amino acids and derivatives, and mitochondria-specific enzyme mimetics from food. Molecular Nutrition and Mitochondria covers the key impacts of nutrition on mitochondria, and is the ideal reference for researchers, students and clinicians looking to develop an in-depth understanding of how dietary compounds can prevent and treat disorders associated with mitochondrial dysfunction. Describes the fundamentals of mitochondria physiology and considers the methods used to evaluate mitochondrial imbalance in clinical practice Provides broad biochemical and metabolic background on nutritional deficits found in mitochondrial dysfunction Explores the prevention and treatment of various inherited and acquired disorders associated with mitochondrial dysfunction Discusses the link between the dosage for each nutrient (nutritional vs. pharmacological) and the clinical effect Features a dedicated section on whole-diet interventions and mitochondrial function

Book excerpt: Surviving Hypoxia: Mechanisms of Control and Adaptation is a synthesis of findings and thoughts concerning hypoxia. The thermodynamics of hypoxia are discussed in detail, including acid-base balance and self-pollution resulting from the accumulation of anaerobic end-products. The book focuses on descriptions and discussions of common facets, contrasting solutions in a variety of physiological hypoxia defense strategies, including those shown by plants, invertebrates, and vertebrates. Special treatment is given to the distinctive problems that hypoxia presents to vulnerable organs such as the kidney, liver, and brain. It also addresses pathological events in addition to protective mechanisms. Clinical implications of basic research are examined in the book, which provides new insights into underlying pathological processes occuring in hypoxic-induced organ failure and indicates new paths for successful clinical intervention. Surviving Hypoxia: Mechanisms of Control and Adaptation is an excellent reference for all researchers interested in the physiological effects of hypoxia, underlying pathological events, and protective mechanisms.
