Dabei wird auch mit menschlichen Genen laboriert, wie zum Beispiel in der "roten Gentechnik", die gentechnische Versuche im Bereich der Medizin umfasst. Dazu zählt die Herstellung von Impfstoffen oder auch Versuche mit Embryonen. Als "weiße Gentechnik" wird die Veränderung von Mikroorganismen in der Industrie bezeichnet. Diese Arbeit dreht sich um die "grüne Gentechnik". Diese bezieht sich auf die Landwirtschaft, wobei es vor allem um die Resistenz gegen Schädlinge oder um ertragreiche Pflanzen geht.

Insbesondere in Europa aber bleibt die Gentechnik ein umstrittenes Thema, das zudem sehr polarisierend wirkt: Auf der einen Seite gibt es unerbittliche Gegner, welche nicht müde werden, auf die ihrer Ansicht nach damit verbundenen Risiken hinzuweisen. Vor allem befürchten sie, dass der Konsument in nicht allzu ferner Zukunft keine Wahl mehr zwischen gentechnisch veränderten und konventionellen Lebensmitteln haben werde. Bei einer zu großen Verbreitung würden - wie sie hervorheben - alle Möglichkeiten der Kontrolle und Steuerung versagen. Der Willkür wäre damit Tür und Tor geöffnet. Auf der anderen Seite steht ihnen eine zahlenmäßig kleinere Gruppe ebenso überzeugter Befürworter gegenüber, welche die Gentechnik als entscheidenden Schritt für die Lösung vieler, nicht zuletzt gesundheitlicher Probleme namentlich in den Entwicklungs- und Schwellenländern ansehen. Mit der Weiterentwicklung der Gentechnik verbinden sie die Hoffnung, wirksam gegen den Hunger in der Welt vorzugehen. Gegenwärtig leiden laut einem UN-Bericht 800 Millionen Menschen auf der Erde an Mangel- oder Unterernährung. Prognosen zufolge werden im Jahr 2100 rund 11 Milliarden Menschen zu ernähren sein - eine Herausforderung, der wir uns alle stellen sollten. Gleichzeitig müssen wir uns aber auch der ethischen Dimension der Gentechnik bewusst werden und uns fragen, wo ihr Grenzen zu setzen sind. Dies gilt insbesondere dann, wenn entsprechende Versuche an Menschen durchgeführt werden, wie erst 2018 im Fall jener Zwillinge, die noch vor ihrer Geburt durch Genmanipulation HIV-resistent gemacht wurden. Obwohl es hierbei um die Bekämpfung einer Krankheit ging, stimmt dieses Beispiel sehr nachdenklich, zumal dasselbe Verfahren auch dafür eingesetzt werden kann, sogenannte "Designer-Babys" zu erschaffen. Der Journalist Wolfgang J. Reus hat diese Dichotomie anschaulich und eindringlich in Worte gefasst: "Ebenso wie die Atomphysik öffnet die Gentechnik dem Menschen sowohl ein Tor zum Himmel als auch zur Hölle."

Book excerpt: This book explores the public role of Islam in contemporary world politics. “Public Islam” refers to the diverse invocations and struggles over Islamic ideas and practices that increasingly influence the politics and social life of large parts of the globe. The contributors to this volume show how public Islam articulates competing notions and practices of the common good and a way of envisioning alternative political and religious ideas and realities, reconfiguring established boundaries of civil and social life. Drawing on examples from the late Ottoman Empire, Africa, South Asia, Iran, and the Arab Middle East, this volume facilitates understanding the multiple ways in which the public sphere, a key concept in social thought, can be made transculturally feasible by encompassing the evolution of non-Western societies in which religion plays a vital role.
