Dies ansichtig zu machen gelingt - entgegen der Vorgehensweise der älteren Forschung, die allzu oft konfessionell und national urteilt - erst aus einer religions- und sozialgeschichtlichen Perspektive, der sich Arnold Angenendt vorzugsweise widmet.

Als Soldat und späterer Hauptmann nahm er an mehreren Kriegen teil. Seine Hände waren von schwerer Arbeit gezeichnet und sein Leben war früh von mystischen Visionen geprägt. Mit der Einwilligung seiner Frau begab er sich mit 50 Jahren zu Gott in die Einsamkeit. Ab diesem Zeitpunkt spricht man von Bruder Klaus. Seinen Frieden fand er nach einer kurzen, schmerzhaften Krankheit am 21. März 1487.
