Book excerpt: Diploma Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, University of Applied Sciences Kufstein Tirol, language: English, abstract: The world is constantly changing, particularly in booming industries such as logistics. Globalisation, increased outsourcing, customers’ demand for global coverage and integrated services are just a few examples of how the external environment affects logistics companies. Based on an external audit for logistics companies with focus on competitive forces, the thesis answers three main questions, which step-by-step answer the main question of how logistics companies should react to the changes in the external environment. Firstly, based on market estimates about future growth rates of the industry it is assessed whether a growth strategy is a feasible grand strategy for logistics companies. The outcome is that the logistics industry is booming and therefore a growth strategy is feasible. Secondly, it is assessed whether mergers and acquisitions (M&A) are a feasible growth option by conducting an event study of logistics M&A transactions for the past decade. The results show that it can not be proven that logistics M&A destroy value for the acquirer and in some cases it can even be proven that they enhance the value of the acquirer. Therefore, it can be concluded that M&A are a feasible growth option for logistics companies. Thirdly, the main challenges for logistics companies from the external environment and the implications for their M&A strategy are discussed. The largest challenges within the industry include the rise of BRIC countries and the integration of freight forwarding and contract logistics. An expansion to China for example is mainly done organically due to the lack of suitable takeover targets, while the combination of freight forwarding and contract logistics is often done through M&A. Capital markets react positively to an integration of the two industries and strategic reasons support this combination too. Shipping lines and railway companies are expanding into logistics competing with logistics companies for the business as well as in M&A tenders. A key in the logistics industry is to get direct access to customers. Shipping lines and railways expanding into logistics and freight forwarders expanding into contract logistics are examples of securing access to customers to realise cross-selling potentials.

In this fiercely competitive sector, predominantly static sales organizations are working hard at keeping their companies on track for success. However, the existence of these companies has never been more at risk than it is today, as most not only have outdated IT systems, but also rely on suboptimal commercial structures. Most companies have fallen far short of their earnings potential, especially during the high freight rate increases of recent years, and in terms of sales volume, they are no longer growing at a sufficient pace or are even risking their continued existence. This book studies how logistics service providers can develop powerful strategies for sustainable growth and position themselves for future success. The author outlines these new rules using examples and step by step guides to take readers through the emerging trends and to outline strategies required to meet the changing demands of the future. The book also makes clear how logistics companies can establish a lasting high-performance culture among their sales teams and how to succeed in winning over sales staff and retaining them in the long term. The author Alexander Nowroth is Managing Partner of LEBENSWERK CONSULTING GROUP based in Düsseldorf, Germany. His consulting clients range from well-known corporations to large family-owned enterprises, all benefiting from his international experience in the shipping and logistics industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are a lot of reasons why companies go global. A particular foreign market may present a greater profitability opportunity than the local market of the business. Perhaps, the business has reached the tipping point in its export business and the market has grown large enough to merit an additional manufacturing facility or partner in another country. Maybe access to skilled, lower-cost workers is an attraction. Possibly setting up a local shop in a foreign market will help circumvent trade barriers that are constraining the company’s growth. The book is for small to medium enterprises (SME), a business that has grown beyond the “start-up venture”. The SME would be an ongoing business, with employees, receivables, and payables. It has a business growth plan, and as the manager, you know what business you are in and have the resources to expand. SMEs typically do not have a cadre of specialists, particularly where logistics and trade compliance are concerned. Those duties are most likely being added to existing staff with similar domestic responsibilities. However, realize that global is not the same as local business, it is outside of common knowledge and there are matters that managers need to understand better so they do not make serious mistakes in the process of going global. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Business economics - Supply, Production, Logistics, grade: 1,4, Heriot-Watt University Edinburgh (School of Management and Languages), course: Green Logistics, language: English, abstract: With climate change and global warming being indisputable the world, its people, economy and companies face severe consequences. These can be literally natural disasters, ambitious climate protection goals and tightened environmental legislation for companies. As freight transport is responsible for a significant proportion of man made CO2 emissions it needs to contribute heavily to accomplishing Kyoto Protocol CO2 reduction targets. Besides complying with legislation focusing on sustainable development of logistics can yield further advantages such as cost savings and enhanced reputation. This dissertation is about developing a green logistics strategy for Strubbe as a logistics service provider mainly concerned with freight transport. In terms of freight transport considering green strategies means focusing on managing carbon emissions. As managing without measuring is not possible the first step was calculating Strubbe ́s carbon footprint. The energy-based calculation approach revealed TTW emissions of 1,120.39 tonnes CO2e for 2012, equivalent to 0.057 kg CO2e per tkm. Even though this intensity figure is lower than default values it could still be reduced by applying carbon emission reduction measures. These measures needed to be applicable to a freight transport concerned small logistics service provider like Strubbe. The review of potential measures yielded five practically applicable options: use of biodiesel (36.27%), reduction of maximum speed to 80 km/h (2.33%), vertical collaboration (1.88%), aerodynamic profiling (1.7%) and reduction of engine idling (0.41%). Their resprective percentage carbon abatement potentials are displayed in brackets. Further analysis revealed following changes in operating cost, in other words abatement costs: use of biodiesel (+19.24%), reduction of maximum speed to 80 km/h (+3.33%), vertical collaboration (-1.88%), aerodynamic profiling (+0.05%), reduction of engine idling (-0.41%). Due to the highly competitive freight transport market it is recommended that the affected companies strive for weak sustainable development of their operations. Any increase of operating cost should be avoided. Thus only carbon reduction measures which decrease operating cost should be applied. Strubbe should implement all of the reviewed measures except the use of biodiesel.
